He was seemingly invincible 1 vs 1 in close combat, but that was before a guy with a stick fought his brother, a tower was blown up with wildfire and a dragon was shot with a ballista.

The reason Sandors shield lit on fire is because he was the shield that guarded men like Jon. Sandor was awesome he was mean as hell but he was a sweet heart to. He loved Arya like a daughter or like an uncle.
