How do you know the barrel of mosquitos were all females? Did you count male mosquitos that identified as females?

I had one of these "early" versions with the catch drawer on the bottom. It caught a massive amount of mosquitos. However, with the drawer on the bottom, the fan would suck the mosquitos through the blades and blow them down into the catch drawer. This would require me to take the whole machine apart and brush the dead bugs off the fan blade with a toothbrush. Still, it was all worth the effort. Fast forward to now, my old machine finally died and I purchased the new style (3100), this one has the drawer on the top of the machine, "in front of the fan". Clogging up the fan and filling the heating fins with cooked mosquitos must have been a common problem so they resigned the trap? I find the screen mesh in the catch drawer is so small it lugs down the fan. I can see the mosquitos going into the drawer but I am thinking there is not enough airflow to hold the majority of them in. Today, after two failed seasons, I made one change. I cut out the old screen in the drawer and replaced it with a regular window screen, I used a hot glue gun to keep it in place. I am hoping this will increase the catch rate. I have the location in a sweet spot and the machine is surrounded by hovering mosquitos, before, after three weeks, it hardly filled up the bottom of the drawer. I am hoping my drawer mod will make the difference. I will post an update in a few weeks...

@@codyarsenault Hi Cody, I ran the unit with the modified screen for a full tank, and still no results like the first model (with the fan mounted before the screen). I did see an increase in mosquitos in the trap when I would pull the drawer out but they were still able to fly out (not enough suction still). I am going to try one more modification this summer. I have a fan that is 120 volt that is way more powerful, I am going to try and switch the fan and move the unit closer to the house for power. It's a last resort move and using house power is the trade-off but I am hoping the increase in power will draw them in and keep them there.

@@markrankin3297 thanks for the update! I’m deciding between the old version of the skeetervac and the 3100 model. I’m also looking into the mosquito magnets. Really not sure which one to go with yet.

@@codyarsenault I will say that when the first one was in operation I pulled in bags of mosquitos and it absolutely improved our ability to move about the property, it does take a little bit to interrupt the breeding cycle. With any of these, you have to learn to maintain the propane nozzle in-between seasons. I always had a rough time on start-up at the beginning of the season only to have to break it down and clean the nozzle. Take care

Nicely done! I was looking at this or the Mosquito Magnet. The mosquito magnet is much more expensive and does have features of auto magically starting and stopping according to the ambient temperature to save on propane. They are also run by rechargeable battery and can also be set to run continuously as well.
