Love the anecdote on phosphorescent dolphins at night. Seeing to torpedoes heading at our mid ships and not knowing what they were and then suddenly turn and dance in our bow wave was one of the most magical and beautiful moments I have ever seen. As you say it is spiritual. I was hanging on to see if you discussed landfalls and unknown port / anchorage arrivals. You did but was hoping for a bit more. That is always a bit of a stressy time. Great panel, great discussions and advice. Thank you.

This was a really good, no BS rundown. It described a lot of the stuff we encounter and think about, and I feel like you often don't a good understanding of until a few years in. Great job on giving really valuable insights for those who are fresh or just thinking about getting travel by boat.

Are you joking? "this stupid non-racing boat is interfering"? I'm a racer much of the time, but not always, and this is the dumbest take I've heard.
@AugustSandberg4 ай бұрын
Yes. Yes, we were joking.
@sarahrosenthal4 ай бұрын
I generally like your guys' content, but as a life long sailor, distance racer and sailing Judge this felt a bit rich: "this stupid non-racing boat is interfering with everything, and actually contributed to us having to bail out of the race". The entitlement of your attitude here hits wrong. Racers have no more right to the water than anyone else, nor does it change the rules of who the stand-on vessel is, especially as most distance races revert to standard COLREGS at night. I know you didn't want to "gybe or slow down" but this one is on you guys.
@AugustSandberg4 ай бұрын
That quote from Andy was obviously tongue-in-cheek, we clearly did not mean anything of what you imply here.
@sarahrosenthal4 ай бұрын
I listened twice, as when you were talking about the challenges of hailing folks by VHF I thought surely it must be satire. But you should know that humour like that doesn't carry well in this context, especially not that kind of story, and it honestly wasn't clear. "Ugh we would have to gybe or slow down. Stupid non-racers" It's not a good look regardless, IMO. Especially the use of the incorrect "right of way" with no real explanation, which just added to the sour taste.

It was great to suddenly meet with Isbjørn about halfway to Shetland sailing southwards. We did not do too bad! We made it to Shetland. Tiramisu is now tied up in Lagos, having succesfully sailed The Orcas Ally resting in Orca holes ( like hurricane holes ). Good luck to Falken coming southwards, guess you will stay in at least a 1.000 meters of water.

Hi mate, I sailed a swan 441 from Australia to the UK via Suez, from Seychelles to UK I was Solo. Before I left Australia I designed my own reefing system and it worked amazing. My record is roughly 30 seconds to putting a reef in, which for a 44ft boat is pretty dam fast. All reefs have outhaul control and I think if ppl understood how simple and effective it is they would install it themselves on their own boat. I have a quick demonstration video on here if you want to see it.

An hour and 20 minutes complaining about how people aren't woke enough or follow rules you want. In 2024 no one is more protected or has it easier then women. Ever think some guys just want to enjoy sailing without the weird dynamic some women can have on a boat? This channel in the past year has turned into some weird woke sailing struggle session. Think how much of this podcast was actually about sailing stories and lessons learned.

Oh wow, I've been listening to your podcasts for quite a while, but for some reason haven never seen your KZbin channel until now. It's great to put a face to the voice I've heard for so long. One of these days I'd love to sail with you guys. I'll have to look at your itinerary. I have family in Karlskrona that I've never visited. Maybe I can somehow combine the two activities at some point. Cheers!

Another great podcast gents. Lots of good examples of sailing at night and I especially enjoyed the bits on the English Channel having been brought up as a very small child crossing from England in all weathers visibility and from the late 60,s so pre gps and the magical AIS days. My must have piece of equipment was a hand bearing compass always dangling around my neck to enable course and position checks and judging whether ships would go behind or in front of you day and night. I still believe that being able to navigate and sail by sight feel and calculation is so much more rewarding than just following what the electronics tell you to do, though I don't blame people to not bother as it seems so much easier.
