The year 1964 not only was the year of the Tokyo Olympics but it was arguably the best year for Denmark when it comes to the All England.The men's singles and doubles were all-Danish affairs with Knud Aage Nielsen and Hammergaard Hansen-Fin Kobbero emerging as champions. Hooliganism reigned supreme at the Tokyo Gymnasium Stadium as Erland Kops was poised to score the winning point after having won the first set with Ferry Sonneville.Unbelievable despite holding seven match points he could not score the winning point as he was taunted and jeered whenever he was about to serve.Years later he lamented,"I just couldn't play with these people around you.They heckled,taunted and jeered at you." Yes Sonneville won the next two sets 17-14 and 17-14 and what it may have been had Kops won. Yes the Tokyo Gymnasium Hall was turned upside down as hooliganism was at its worst but then the Danes should be applauded for their exemplary and fine sportsmanship. Indonesia won 5-4 but Tan Joe Hock lost to All England champion Knud Aage Nielsen and it was Joe Hock's only defeat in his glittering Thomas Cup career.

Badminton at its infancy

Yes it was hooliganism at its worst in the 1964 Thomas Cup challenge round between defending champions Indinesia and favourites Denmark at the Tokyo Gymnasium Hall. Kops after having win the first set and was poised to score the winning point in the second set holding match point service not once but eight times was distracted by camera flash lights directed at his face.He just could play his normal game and lost focus.As he lamented years later after the harrowing incident in Tokyo," I just couldn't play with these Indonesian fans around me.They kept taunting and jeering at me as I was about to serve." Yes Kops lost both the next two sets to Sonnevile by deuce 17-14 but the Danes should be applauded for their fine sportsmanship. Kops defeat was the turning point as Indonesia retained the Thomas Cup winning 5-4 in the end. What it may have been had Kops won with Sonneville as Denmark then would have been the first European team to win the Thomas Cup.

It was such a fiercely fought three set thriller that Swie King could not score the winning point as he was holding five match points in the deciding set.It was the tenacious Han Jian who time again frustrated Swie King as the latter lost his cool and flung his racquet onto the court in frustration and disgust.That gave the impetus to Han Jian to score the winning point at 18-17. Swie King's defeat to Han Jian was very costly and it changed the outcome in China's favour. Yes for the first time Indonesia so used to winning had to bite the dust to settle for second best as they lost 5-4. But that defeat in the "Super Clash" was just a hiccup.But the real one would take place two years later in the 1982 Thomas Cup finals held in London.China edged Indonesia 5-4 in the final to end Indonesia's twelve year domination of the Thomas Cup since 1970.

Sebagai juara Piala Thomas Indonesia sebelum perlawanan persahabatan itu dah terima buruk dengan ketiadaan pemain bergu mereka Johan Wahjudi yang terpaksa mengundurkan diri kerana kecederaan yang dialami dalam tangannya. China menang 5-4 dalam perlawanan persahabatan tersebut dengan Han Jian menewaskan juara All England dua kali Liem Swie King menerusi pertarungan tiga set dengan set penentuan memihak kepada Han Jian 18-17.
