I know the feeling. Hard to relax and just let it fly (and it will) but you did well. Any takeaways as to weather clues to avoid? Was it mechanical off those hills, a shear layer? Convective?

I would be scared too flying something that most aircraft mechanics would tell you is not airworthy.

Back in the early 60's my dad home built a few gyrocopters, the first one he never flew, the second one was more according to the original 'benson' plans. It was pretty well built but the engine he used as a pusher didn't meet the required HP and he would have a friend tow it in a field with an old vw till he got enough lift to take off. On his second attempt it seemed like all was going well but he lost his airspeed and it nosedived into the ground. Fortunately he was only a few hundred ft in the air. He survived but it almost killed him.

These aside from gyrocopters (possibly worse than who knows) are some of the stupidest shittiest ultralights you can build. Literally control inputs are a suggestion

What kind of an aircraft is this called?

Whilst this was not severe turbulence, I fully understand how it makes you feel in such a small and slow craft. I has a sub 70 outfit in the early days and the bar was literally being snatched out off my hands it was scary stuff. Later years I had a Chaser S, small powerful machine with a tiny wing, it handled turbulence completely differently and it felt much more like a light aircraft with very little deviation, only bump bump bump. Enjoy folks it’s all good.
