It was so clear how the French National Team depended on Zidane, when Zidane reached his best moment , the French Team won the World Cup in 1998, Euro in 2000, Confederations 2001. He got an injury just before the World Cup 2002 and he played the third match, but he was still injured, the team was eliminated in the first round without scoring a goal. After that, Zidane got better and the French team played better for the Euro 2004. Zidane reached a good level for the 2006 Worlkd Cup, and the French Team arrived to the final.

I stopped there lol you don't know what you are talking about, Zidane wasn't so great in 98, his peak was the world cup 2006 and France lost, plus France won the Confederations Cup in 2001 and 2003 WITHOUT Zidane. He was the best French player of this era and if you put aside 98 he may also have been he most important player but the whole team was awesome, the defense was crazy good with Barthez, Desailly, Blanc (98-00), Thuram and Lizarazu, the midfield had players like Deschamps (98-00) Petit, Viera, Djorkaeff, Pires or Makelele and the attack... well just Henry and Trezeguet respectively the best scorer in England and Italy in 2002 lol. The French team of this era was pretty much all star.

France was definitely on top of the world between 1998-2003. Even without Zidane, they still had a very strong team. I remember when Henry was sent off in the second game, they could still control the game with 10 men. However, there were too many factors that affected them. Zidane and Pires' injury was fatal. At the same time, Henry also had injury and were forced to play Pires' position as a winger. Lebouf was injured in the second game which forced Thuram to play center back with Desailly. I know Thuram was a top center back, but in the French team, he mostly played right back at that time. Djorkaeff was not trusted after the first game, but honestly his performance was not bad. Despite all these things and the fact that the whole team is quite aged, they still have players like Micoud, Makelele and Cisse. It was a pity that these players didn't stand out and show their ability in this tournament.

@nate_24934 жыл бұрын
A Uruguayan player, Dario Silva, should also have been sent off for a similar tackle on Vieira, but he only got yellow-carded. Apart from Henry's expulsion, most of the ref's decisions were anything but fair.
@arnosteunv70294 жыл бұрын
The tackle would have been really dangerous if it had targeted the non-kicking foot. Given that it's only the 25th minute, that he attempts to block the ball without an intent to hurt, this could very well have been an orangey yellow. Like it or not, this was perceived as harsh in France, and in that sense it was controversial.
@blaxors6 жыл бұрын
Same world cup, saw a guy make a worse tackle than Henry, stomped on the guy's tibia with his cleats, and just got a yellow with the other player being carted off the field. That red card was unfair. Pair that with shitty luck, lack of preparation, injuries etc.

I found this match recently with (pretty much) the exact commentary you picked up on. Jon Champion (my favourite commentator hehe) was at the microphone for ITV. Tomasson scores to make it 2-0, France would now have to score four unanswered goals in the space of half an hour: "Gravesen, to Gronkjaer... and here's TOMASSON!!! It's bye bye France!! The leading contender for the Golden Boot, has just applied the order of the boot, to the world champions." At the final whistle: "Referee looks at his watch, and it's goodbye France! The end of four years of footballing domination. So many moments to savour, and now one that will haunt them for seasons to come. We shouldn't forget that Denmark go through, and that in itself is a huge achievement but all champions have to surrender their title! Four years ago in Paris, France were supreme, now others are superior, and amidst Danish cheers and Gallic tears, Denmark are the winners in Incheon, by two goals to nil."
