I used to fly charters in SoCal and often into Mammoth Lakes up the Owen's valley. One time in a Seneca II loaded with three 20 something girls and two 20 something guys I had forewarned them it would be a very bumpy ride but they were insistent. I stocked the a/c with barf bags. The winds over the Sierra Nevada range was 80 knots plus. This setup a mountain wave and rotor in the valley that as something. For close to an hour at Maneuvering Speed we watched the vertical speed indicator fluctuate rapidly between 1200 up and 2000 down. it was an hour long case of zero G push overs followed by close to 2.0 pull ups. When we landed at Mammoth Lakes everyone was sick many times over. I wasn't feeling the best myself. For the first 30 minutes it was fun, then once their resistance gave out it became barf city.

In the UK it is part of the compulsory training when learning to glide There is a good reason for this. When you are launched by winch, there can be a point at the very top when the line goes tight and you experience zero-G. There were a number of incidents where the glider got to the top then instead of releasing the line they just pushed down the nose and held it there until they hit the ground. They found out that what was happening was that some students who had never experienced the disorientation before where pushing the nose down in panic and that just made it even worse so they carried on pushing the stick forward. The instructors were unable to wrestle back control and almost invariabled both were killed. They now demonstrate it so the students are less likely to panic though I have heard of some gliding clubs that saw the students stick in half and put a plastic sleeve over it so that if the student does panic the instructor can pull back hard enough to break the plastic and let him regain control.

That’s a relatively benign maneuver, but as a general rule of thumb…. If your pilot says “do you want to do something fun” it is usually best to say “No Thanks”

Monday - lots of $, no toys, no broads. Depressed. Tuesday - spends 200k on some flying saucer, broke. Had the 3 way all planned out with 2 said broads. When I was an active skydiver, we would occasionally ask the jump plane driver for a negative G exit. We would float beside the plane for a second or two before gravity caught us. D7466.
