Yeah, that was certainly a low odds time to call but had to give him a try. I’ve had good luck with grunting in specific situations. We have a video coming out later this fall (most likely) of grunting a buck in that was following a doe and ended up getting a shot.

First video of yours I have watched, I also lost my dad in 2020, he was a Hunter Ed instructor for 40 years, loved hunting and has instilled it in me and one of my brothers, emotions run high with each hunt I have without him, but I know where he is, and try my best to live and hunt the way he taught me, and it does choke you up alot, but that's how I know he is there watching over, you have earned my respect as well, as you respect the animal , wish and strive for a clean ethical hunt, and carry on your dad's teaching. That is truly awesome.

To all the complainers out there, this hunt was for the kids to experience the hunt and legal way to do it. This video is not about the music or complaining about baiting. The only thing that matters is the pride and joy on the kids faces for a hunt well done. I have been hunting for 72 years and still remember my first hunt and how I felt just shooting a rabbit. Well done to all !!.

How is baiting considered “hunting”? I guess I should leave a bushel of apples out for the deer and call that hunting too?
@TheMaineHunt5 ай бұрын
We’re only interested in engaging in real conversations, but we won’t debate the ethics of hunting when approached sarcastically like you are doing.
@brianeaton37345 ай бұрын
@@TheMaineHunt I am engaging in real conversation. I don’t understand how baiting can be considered hunting. It’s just shooting at a target in my mind. Can you explain how I am wrong, or are you just going to dismiss it because you can’t?
@TheMaineHunt5 ай бұрын
Hunting is also about conservation and population control. Deer and bear are 2 wildly different animals. To effectively control the bear population, baiting needs to be allowed. Also, baiting bears is one of the harder hunts anyone can do, it’s a ton of work. Also, bears are not dumb, they absolutely know humans are placing the food and getting them to come out in daylight can be a real challenge. It’s not as easy as it looks in an edited 20 minute video. Also, engaging in real conversation isn’t combative, so maybe work on your approach if you want to have a genuine conversation. You’re entitled to your opinion, we never asked everyone watching to agree with us.
@royguidry13115 ай бұрын
Don’t knock something you haven’t tried. Hunting bears in Maine is nearly impossible without a food source. In the Maine woods it is very thick and without a food plot, farmers field or bait you are never seeing a bear much less killing one much less possibly being able to assess whether or not a bear is a Sow with cubs. It takes a lot of time and effort to collect food for bait and then properly bait to a point a bear may actually come to the site during daylight. I know hundreds of hunters up here in Maine that have been baiting for years and have never had a shot at a mature boar. I guess it all comes down to personal preference, if you will not hunt near or around an apple tree, won’t put out attractants or minerals then that is your choice. I can tell you if that is your choice and you are after bear in Maine you have about a one in ten thousand hour chance of getting any bear. I have killed bear on my bait sites as well as on clover and oat fields, in 30 years of hunting hard in Maine I have never seen but one small bear just walking across the woods. If you think it is as easy as chucking a dozen donuts on the ground and then wait till a bear shows up, you would be wrong. Not for everyone but unless the definition of hunting is vastly different between me and you, it’s not just a hunt but a very low percentage hunt especially if you target large adult males. My definition is using my skills, intellect and human ingenuity to effectively get myself in range of a target animal and hopefully successfully kill said animal. Hope this logic explains it a bit better for you despite what your opinion of it is. Regards.

You can certainly offer an opinion on topics such as bear hunting. I just hope it is an informed opinion before you blow up some young man’s successful bear hunting video that he has probably shared with his friends. Baiting, snaring and hunting with hounds are all legal means to harvest black bear in Maine. None of those methods are a sure thing. Bears are intelligent animals with a nose that can smell you a mile away. This video was very well done and I can assure you those young men didn’t harvest bears in 20 minutes. Someone spent weeks working those baits to put those fellas in a position to be successful. You could also hear an experienced hunter talking the young man through the shot. Biologists determine how many bears need to be harvested to keep the population healthy that is why we have several ways we can legally harvest bears. Even with all the methods of hunting I do not believe enough bears are being harvested. This past year there was discussion at the state house to allow 2 bears over bait. Bear hunting is incredibly expensive due to the price of bait and gas so it’s not something just anyone can do. It is also time Consuming and a ton of work. The type of topography and woods in Maine do not lend itself to stalking, tracking or glassing for bear. Therefore, you are allowed to bait them where you can determine the size, sex and maturity of the bear and take a safe and humane shot. The alternative would be shooting at a running bear that you may or may not know what you are shooting at. If you could find one. Unfortunately, in other states bear hunting has become a political topic. What do politicians know about bear biology and habitat? Nothing…. Last I read Maine has one of the largest black bear populations in the nation- 35,000. Kudos to our state and our biologists for that! Google “bear mange” and you will see what happens to a bear when the population isn’t managed appropriately. I’d rather take a bullet than suffer a long drawn out, terrible death where eventually you starve to death. Hopefully this gives you a bit more context on the topic.

People don't understand how tough these animals are,, they have no sense of mortality, they don't know what death is or that they are mortally wounded. The Deer just knows its hurt and needs to get away from whatever is chasing them. I too have been in this situation, it just sucks,, Period.. There is no sugar coating it. If you hunt long enough, this will happen. The best you can do is stick to it and do the best you can to bring the animal to rest. I'm pleased to see you had the fortitude to follow up and finish what you started. Good ethics Son.. ~Best
