Funny how in Ferengi society monopolies over the market are encouraged but oh no can't let the workers have any leverage and power to negotiate. It's puzzling anyone would agree to deal with much less work for Ferengi instead of any other society which still uses monetary exchange for goods and services.

Gotta love how the Ferengi react to hearing the word “union”, like if it’s true heresy (and considering Ferengi religion, it might as well be).

Unionization in Ferengi culture is treated as one of the biggest crimes in their society, and if I remember correctly it can incur the death penalty (hence why the word is never uttered lightly). The method of execution for people found guilty of such crimes is to be pushed off the Tower of Commerce on Ferenginar.

What most people don’t realize is that unions don’t improve the quality life for everyone. A union causes products and services to become more expensive. As a result, unions have no choice but to demand protection from market forces. An expensive unionized company can’t compete with less expensive non-unionized companies. So what begins as a desire for higher wages becomes an attempt to create a monopoly. And once the union has a monopoly, they can raise their own wages as much as they want, and customers have to pay the higher price. Then finally, the unionized company becomes so burdened with debt, high wages, and political payoffs, that it goes bankrupt. Amtrak, the Public Schools, Detroit, and many branches of the government operate as unionized money-losing boondoggles. They carry trillions of dollars of union pensions on the books which can never be paid. The taxpayer never approved. Military pensions were never approved either. But unions are political blackmailers. They will go on strike and shut-down everything unless their demands are met. In England, Trade Union strikes are happening all over the country. The free market requires competition. Different companies try to offer the best products at the lowest cost. Unions on the other hand, offer the worst products at the highest cost. Our terrible military and naval equipment was made by unions. And they don’t care if they deliver good value or not. They have a monopoly. So don’t be fooled by this pro-union propaganda. The only result of forming a union is high prices, and terrible service. Union members can’t get fired, so nothing matters. The only solution is to dissolve all unions, both in America and in England. Union members are often violent, so they’ll probably burn down half the cities. But that’s just proof that they’ve always been violent. We need to remake the economy of both America and England so that small businesses will be free to compete in any way, with no restrictions.

It's a simple logic at work. As long as one group of people (employers) benefits through the exploitation of another (employees) this unequal relationship will continue. The bosses have the money and the authority, and workers are forced to obey. Worker vs boss is an unequal struggle, that is why workers have to organize. Collectively they can use their power (labor that makes everything run) to demand the treatment they deserve. The problem with most unions is another power imbalance, the leadership structure. A small group of leaders making decisions and negotiating on behalf of the majority of workers will lead to all the same problems of government - corruption, greed, etc. The alternative is not no unions, but a structure where the rank and file, every worker, has a voice and decisions are made collectively, not by an empowered minority. Right now we have minority rule and things are terrible. The alternative, majority rule would obviously be better - it's for the majority. But even still, there doesn't have to be any "rule" by anyone over anybody else. Decisions can be made through consensus, where compromise is used to make sure the most people are satisfied, and everybody is heard, so that there are no more "winners" and "losers" but people tackling their problems together, and trying to reach the most beneficial solution for the most people.

Almost as if we need some form of council? We could have the council appoint a representative that is recallable and bound by the decision. Then we could unite those councils to form even bigger organisations, that would mennage the economy with socialist principles (common ownership). And we might call it the Union of Socialist Councils. And since we are the republic (I can'r imagine this system working in monarchy tbh), we could call our country the Union of socialist council republics?

“The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of the working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life. “Between these two classes a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organize as a class, take possession of the means of production, abolish the wage system, and live in harmony with the Earth.” -IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) preamble

The employing class were, once, the working class. Hunger and want only exist, so long as one doesn't take opportunities given to them. Seizing the means of production is fine. What then? Where does the production go? Where does it come from? Who speaks for the group? When an emergency comes up, who's in charge? This preamble looks good, until you give it three seconds of thought.
