Sweet setup dude! Just got my GF and I’m in the process of building a stand for it (I need organization!). Can you share with me those plans you made so I can just follow what you did? Also, I’ve been searching everywhere for the order of the disconnect fittings need to do what you did. Any advice you have would be much appreciated! Happy brewing!

Good looking set up! Love all these great ideas home brewers share. We shoot short video docs about craft breweries in the Netherlands ourselves, you might like our channel :) Happy to subscribe to your channel, cheers!

A lot of nice stand designs on the Flckr page but pretty useless as nobody leaves contact info to get plans for any of them. Same goes for all the mods. I need instructions as I'm not gifted like any of you.

Nice set up. I'm curious how you determined the overall height. Could it be a bit shorter? Cheers!
@jay_martin
@jay_martin 7 жыл бұрын
The hight is based on whats needed to move gravity fed water in the sparge configuration. If I recall correctly it needs 43+ inches. It's about a low as you can get. You can see several other examples here - www.flickr.com/photos/grainfatherstandsmods/

Thanks for the link. Some really sweet rigs there. Many ideas! I had figured no less than 42". I was trying to keep it as short as possible for storage. Cheers!

Why not leave the lid on and buy the Graincoat Assessory?

I just placed an order for the US version. Actually had to wait a while for it to become available again. I'm thinking of canceling my order after this video. All of the other videos I watched before ordering were from Euro models and the boil was very vigorous which is why I ordered this instead of a BM 20 liter version. I wonder if we could order the Euro model and just change the cord end like with the BM? Would have to change the electric service of course. Anyone know?

Good so far. Had to up the capacity of heat to get a good rolling boil.

Yes. It's just like any hot water heater element. The one you read about that isn't "food safe" has some welds around a housing which aren't verified. This one is good.

Its cheap, however the reviews do not give me the warm and fuzzies. Can't find if its food safe. I hate to have to do this but I had another disappointing boil with me most recent brew. I am going to pick this up. www.brewhardware.com/product_p/hotrod.htm

I just got my Grainfather all set up and wrapped up in reflective foil and the first thing I did was a boil test. It took awhile, even with the lid, but once it reached boil, I propped the lid with a carboy bung and it was still much more vigorous boil than this. I was pleasantly surprised. My last set-up was an 1800 watt induction cook top that barely held a boil with 4 gallons, but the propped lid helped a ton. Though my palette is probably dead at this point, I never noticed any off flavors from not taking lid completely off during the boil, so I'm going to try this method(probably with a different lid, with a handle. Ouch) with my first few batches this weekend.

Chad Hoyne I'm uploading a video which shows the GF with a very good rolling boil when I augment with a 1000w heat stick. An $8 hack that fixes the problem. It will up later tonight.

Ole Goat Brewing TV It's all the way in for sure. At first it was only reaching 208, and after pushing it in all the way it went up a whole 1 degree to 209

Informative video, thanks. Glad to see someone at sea level is experiencing similar observations, although my observations at 4,200ft altitude (in Colorado) is not as pronounced as yours. Water boils at 203F here, so I saw a modest rolling boil with the lid off. As long as the water is "churning", I am satisfied with the boil of the GF unit. The wort is moving and the temp is at boil, so that's fine for me. I don't think I need it to roil boil like I used to see with my old propane system. Observation: With the lid on, the water evaporation was constrained and the chance of boil-over was imminent. If boil evaporation is necessary for meeting final OG and wort volumes, then the lid has to come off - the little hole on top doesn't allow for steam to evap fast enough. I like the reflectix idea, I will employ on mine! I noticed that keeping strike temps and step-mash temps was a minor challenge - they fluctuated +/- 2F at each step. I bet the reflectix will help maintain more consistent step mash temps. I also made some observations you may find useful as well. Look for the GF video on my youtube channel. Again, nice helpful video.

I had a less vigorous boil with mine, and it took a very very long time to reach 213F. Even when there it was not boiling very much. So yea im looking for a way to add some more heat to my unit as well. However I do like the system and the efficiency I get on the mash.
@olegoatbrewingtv847
@olegoatbrewingtv847 9 жыл бұрын
Slapshotcs I think I found a way to get the heat we need. Also agree with you 100% on the mash. The system rocks...its only limited by what the US power grid can supply. A simple hack will take care if it.

Thanks for the vid!! Just completed my first batch with this setup(US version) and noted the same issues with slow time to boil and a very slow rolling boil. Think I may try to leave the lid on next batch, hoping the size of the hole on the lid eliminates/reduces the chance for DMS!!! Cheers
