A bolt is a very poor choice for knife material. Edge retention will be pathetic. Wear resistance is NOT a requirement in a bolt, but is a requirement in a knife. Use a drill bit or something next time.

I like the use of a drill press as a lathe, but you might be better off getting a proper spindle gouge rather than using a beveled chisel

I misunderstood entirely when I saw the 'thumbnail' of what this project was. I actually thought it was simply using an old/broken drill bit, fixing it will an handle, and then honing down the 'solid' end for the marking knife section. Mind you, using either end of a drill bit would work. Seems a LOT less work, AND saves a good bolt, whilst recycling a drill bit! Just my thoughts.

@@tamarlindsay8382it depends on the bolt. Some are Grade 3, Grade 5, and Grade 8. Those are the common automotive ones. Then there’s aviation, where they’re designed for either tensile force or shear force, and can be rated stronger even than Grade 8.

No expert, but I was unconvinced they are designed for sideways stress when used as a vertical lathe. Nevertheless, impressive video.

This tool is very nice. Like the twist in the shaft, makes it look custom, not like the mass produced tools. Yeah, they get the job done, but they look so bland. Your tool has some pizazz to it.
