While I’m sure not many want to see Howe replaced, it has to be said that some of his tactical decisions and refusal to take players out of the team at times left a sour taste in the mouth. Baffling at times and beyond frustrating.. Si Campbell will contort himself into a pretzel seeing only the positives in everything Howe has achieved.. a total and utter contrast to his views under Bruce, where anything and everything was a negative. Howe has a huge season ahead, he needs to be more proactive in games and his selections have to be better .. there can be no excuses if we are to become contenders

Eddie may have made mistakes during last season but you learn about people in tough times and for me he came through extremely strong and achieved ahead of what may be expected with squad and issues. Not often mentioned, when we qualified for CL, it was during a season with a huge mid season break for world cup- which helped us hugely. No better manager available for Newcastle unless you get Klopp, Pep or Carlo. He also loves being our manager and is in tune with our club

Sam is missing a very important point. I would ask him why he thinks Eddie is keeping the players? What are his reasons? If anyone thinks he’s just being a mate or not being ruthless or even just being avoidant of the bad vibe of letting players go I think they have got a very erroneous view of the senior management and how they are set up, what their goals are and what performance indicators hang over them. The club is run by grown ups now. Eddie is a very consummate pro and suggesting he suffers from favouritism is a cheap shot or an unfounded one. Yousef seems to be quoting from his A level Business Study text book. If you’ve ever had to manage a team, any team over a period of time you’ll know that the common criticism is that you didn’t change something quickly enough. This is pure hindsightism and poor perspicacity. Changing things too quickly is equally fatal. You can’t bring players back on for a start. Once you make a change it’s done. Also, making too many changes too often is disruptive. Having a plan B is essential but it has to be a ‘plan’ and not a panic move or a speculative punt.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said “God fortune hides the true genius of a general while adversity reveals it”. (I think he was paraphrasing Horace: 'Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it. Anyway….) This is how I see last season. You really can’t underestimate the impact of our injury crisis and the way it drained the energy out of the whole squad. Eddie did a genuinely fantastic job navigating the season on depleted resources. Anyone in the know will have recognised this.
@dansnowden91472 күн бұрын
Si makes the point about not having the time on the training pitch to introduce young players - he changed almost the full team and won away at Man U. If there was ever a realisation of how important of rotating the team it was then. So that point is another nonsense one. Lewis Hall had played 8 prem games the season before at Chelsea against the best teams in the league even playing at SJP. When you are playing a CB with an ACL and a CB playing LB getting roasted each week, shopping goals for fun - it completely voids any suggestion that a younger, far more talented player should’nt play. No matter how creative you 3 want to be with your excuses, that point is also nonsense. And playing a CB who has an ACL is far far beyond just concerning

Howe deserves the upcoming season of course but it is a big one for him. I like him, hope he does well, but I do have concerns about our injuries and his / the coaching teams responsibility for them and his ability to affect games in positive ways. He's still learning, great, let's see him fix these issues then I'll know he has learned.

The weirdest thing for me is that Eddie has a cult like worshiping it’s bizarre. He should be judged the same as anyone else in top level sport. He made clear mistakes last season and just reminds me of Southgate. I hope he takes the England job as he doesn’t deserve that sack but is not the man to take us forward in my opinion. Happy for people to disagree though but it doesn’t make you more of a supporter 😴

You say 'clear mistakes' and I say clear successes in terms of avoiding relegation, coaching and improving players, his win record, doing well in cup competitions ( despite lots of away matches), his buy record is good... Agree some games we have looked awful but even in those I am unsure whether it was our players weren't in form (coming back from long injuries) or Eddie making a mistake?

The big takeaway from me is that fans have completely lost the plot talking about Eddie Howe underachieving this season, getting 7th with the players we had available. Even with a fully fit squad I am sorry but we do not have a top 6 side. We have 5 elite players and the rest are average to good. The big 6 all have more elite players available it's not even close.
@TheIncredibleBeard_3 күн бұрын
Football is about moments and to succeed you need to win the big ones. On average, we are a good side and (for arguments sake) a top 8 team. What we aren't is a team that can turn up for the big moments that win you trophies or get you into Europe. This to me is the only question mark about Howe - does he have it in him to create a team that can turn up for 'that' game that really matters.

@@TheIncredibleBeard_ I agree we are a top 8 side (on the lower end of that scale). We have the 9th highest wage bill in the league with 5 sides having double the budget we do. A new manager has more chance of taking us down the league than helping us climb it. Clearly some fans learned absolutely nothing from sacking Sir Bobby for finishing 5th

As well as increasing revenue from associated parties, I recently found out that city also reduce their costs by employing a lot of the backroom staff in their parent company (e.g. their entire scouting/recruitment department) so as to remove them from the PSR calculations. As an example, the report I read showed that Man City (the football club, not their parent company) had half as many employees as Man Utd. Along with Chelsea selling hotels to themselves, etc, it's clearly just one big sham that a select few clubs can get away with.

European Super League incoming. Definitely. This WILL happen. Clubs will branch off to form their own league and have full control over what they can spend. And yes, I know Newcastle wouldn't have been involved in this a few years ago, but Saudi will not sit back and watch Newcastle miss out on the Super League regardless of if we aren't classed as one of the 'big 6' from England yet.

FFP but more so PSR were brought in so smaller clubs (some having illustrious histories) wouldn't go under because their owners were dreadful & mismanaged or, more often, couldn't keep up with the rest ! I understand that but, the emphasis should be on SUSTAINABILITY . However, like everything, the grey suits with the power have gone too far & I have an idea how to solve this but, I think, it involves commonsense. If they allow all teams in the PL to spend up to £500m per season &, whatever they do spend they have to pay a contribution of 10% , this pot of money should not be subject to tax or PL admin fees but filtered down to all the lower league clubs ! Obviously I've just picked those figures out because that's what both Chelsea and manure have spent in the recent past , it's subjective 🎉

The restrictions on sponsorships are ridiculous. They are extremely anti-competitive, and i hope City win. These stupid rules are hobbling any owners ability to grow their clubs. Banning owners from putting their clubs in loads of debt, you can make a decent argument for (although the PL dont seem to care about Man United's ludicrous debts), but thats not the case with the sponsorship stuff. If Sela want to sponsor us £300m a season, who cares as long as its not a bloody loan, as long as its not debt. Its the only way any team has a realistic chance of clawing back some ground on Liverpool and Man Ure etc.
