Great video! About the lore of the city, we've actually gotten a HUGE reveal in the newest manga 'season' Beat3Peat. We literally see the Great Collapse from the New York perspective and even tackle the whole 'why do people act like this is normal'. The manga is really good after the anime so I highly recomend it.

For the test arc I found the dungeon irritating, not the rest of the test. The dungeon seemed more stereotypical of regular game anime, and the magic in it inconsistent with the powers shown in the rest of the show. The “copy abilities of participants and even thinking/strategies” ability was too OP and unbelievable compared to the rest of the magic brought up so far.

You can't have cool characters, doing cool things in-character, without setting up their personalities to them test them. Otherwise you just have some isekai power fantasy of wooden planks being murder hobo self inserts who have an unrelatable need to be the strongest ever.

I was so skeptical of “Frieren” being as good as everyone was making it out to be at first when it first came out.. people calling it a “masterpiece” on par with the likes of Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood & Code Geass etc etc.. I was so skeptical & thought how absurd to make such bold & foolishly impossible claims etc lol.. So I decided to say fuck it & give it a watch, this was right when the second to last episode aired, so it was essentially just finished at the time.. I decided to give the first few episodes a watch first to see what I think so far & didn’t plan to continue much further if it wasn’t that good or didn’t draw in my intrigue etc.. well.. after the first episode I was completely hooked! I binged the whole thing in a single sitting, & couldn’t believe how ungodly amazing of a series it really ended up being! As impossible as I thought it was for me to admit…. It genuinely is a masterpiece on par with the likes of FMAB & Code Geass, & that takes A LOT for me to claim & admit!.. I don’t say that flippantly! As I consider those two series in the highest of regards to any show or media I’ve EVER seen or absorbed in my entire life… so that makes Frieren a truly one of a kind masterpiece of an anime & show/series overall to me.. & this is coming from someone who has watched/read thousands & thousands of anime & manga.. so I kind of do honestly know what I’m talking about here lol.. Frieren blew my expectations out of the water, & I fully admit to claiming it as being a modern masterpiece currently.

Serie is so inflexible and cannot admit that maybe Flamme & Frieren are right about the little spells also being important. She thought Fern, being human, would ask for the power spells. If she had known that Fern was like Flamme & Frieren she would have failed her as well.

The exam arc is a setup for the later parts of the manga. Give it time. Trust in Frieren. The exam arc is also great, not everyone thinks its lesser than earlier content.
@beaucole4467 күн бұрын
I challenge your reasoning for Frieren being failed. She was failed because she can not bring anything new to the world of magic. She is a relic and the reason for the society is to advance magic forward. Everyone who failed besides her had nothing new to offer yet. Everyone who passed had something unique to offer from type of magic, perspective, drive and potential. Frieren has none of these things to offer, all of her magic is already known and not really used in a unique way, her perspective is simplistic, she doesn't really have any drive to progress, and she is already in the later stages of her potential. This is why Frieren says no matter what she will never pass.
@Kamimashita7 күн бұрын
This assumes that Serie is an impartial judge who is looking to pass people that advance magic. Serie throughout has been shown to be capricious, haughty, and prideful. Serie thinks of Frieren as weak despite her obvious ability, and ability is all the test is supposed to measure. This arrogance is established because it makes Fern passing all the more surprising and impressive.
@beaucole4467 күн бұрын
@@Kamimashita But Serie isn't running the magic association for herself she is doing it to fulfil flamme's wish to see humans reach the pinnacle of magic therefore only passing people who will actually advance magic makes sense. Also she doesn't view Frieren as weak but as a waste of potential since Frieren has no desire for power. She is haughty and prideful but she also deeply loves all of her pupils hense the flowers that filled the room where she judged everyone was made my Flamme's favorite spell. Everyone she passed had the potential to change the status quo of magic.

Exam is a big trope in anime, but Frieren Beyond Journey's End expands on it rather than just having fighting to add fluff to a series. It uses this trope as a tool to expand on its world. And if you look closely, there is *_so much_* themes, symbolism, hidden details, and so much more you can pick up. storieswithstyle does a great job analyzing these. My favorite flavor this arc adds is explaining its magic system, as an Exam arc is a great way to show this off. To sum it in one phrase, Richter in episode 21 says "Spells can't produce effects you can't picture." This is such a cool system and later in the arc, it is exploited via the character Übel.

Oh well, 6 months late. No, Fern is not able to defeat a strong foe like Frieren's clone yet. Frieren kept it busy to make and opening to Fern who basically backstabbed the clone. It was teamwork to force the clone to use a spell that made the caster to lower its defense completely. That spell she had to use against the Demon King itself 80 years ago. You know, that spell that yeeted Fern to the wall. That spell where she wasn't able to detect any mana while she can see the slight fluctuations on Serie's mana supression. So yeah, she is not there yet.

When i was 16, I was basically at the end of a rope. I knew that i couldn't finish school because i couldn't get myself to learn anything. I knew that without school i couldn't get a job. I didn't like anything. I didn't do anything, nothing meant anything to me. My uncle then gave me the following advice: "doesn't matter what you do, the only thing that matters is that when you are done with it, you have become a better person than you were before." Ironically, him saying that kinda made him a better person and in turn made me a better person in the long run as i was doing what he told me. I am not... all the way out of the abyss, even if it had been a long time. But i am here and am a better person than i was back then. And i kinda see that in Frieren too. Also in this video.

I love the arc in itself, it just feels a little... "forced" into the overarching plot. For one, the entire reasoning is that in order to travel further north they need a first class mage (which is for all intents and purposes the absolute strongest a mortal can achieve), yet normal people just live there as well, even though they obviously aren't first class mages. Then I get that the reason for that rule in universe is because they value human life and don't want them to just die in vain, yet they have no problem setting up an exam where over half of the participants will end up as casualties? And finally, the world beyond the central lands has been shown to be wild and far away from any civilization, but suddenly there is this large organization that imposes rules on life out there and tightly connects a world that was always shown to be disconnected and small before... It's just a small discrepancy that keeps creeping into my mind whenever I watch the start of the arc...

The same people hating on the exam arc probably think the Chunin Exams were the most hype shit even though Kishimoto didn't even want to do them, or at least not in the way that it ended up happening. Also, it was just great on a surface level, with a handful of new characters introduced that had great writing and contributed to the world building in a big way. Glasses never leaving his hometown and him and Serie looking right at each other, miles apart, blew me away. I think people probably just think any sort of 'tournament/competition/exam/etc' arc = bad, just because it's such a common trope, the same way people in general think shonen = bad/'mid', just because it's the face of mainstream anime. But Frieren defies these expectations, and is easily one of the best anime ever made, across genres, despite its simplicity. It tugs on the heartstrings in all the right ways and perfectly reflects a genuine love for humanity and the human condition.

The exam arc was a bit long-winded because so many new characters were introduced. This did distract from the main 3 character developments in the same way 'many meetings' in LotR books did. It's not bad per se, though I can sympathise with those that are a bit impatient. But if we never see those characters again and doesn't really add to the story, I don't mind having that in an addendum or extra episode.

One thing I really like about this arc that I saw someone talk about somewhere else: Every mage other than frieren and fern's parties end up completely out of mana in the first exam, it really shows why their approach to fighting is "enough for mages of this era" because ehre, who was said to be the strongest one there was wasting so much mana using so many unnecessary spells. Flying is not just a waste of mana, but it also allows Fern to attack her from literally any angle, whereas since Fern is on the ground, she doesn't need to defend from attacks below her.

I can appreciate the exam arc for what it is, but it's still a jarring shift in tempo from months and years passing by to the last 9 eps covering about 10 days
