We are doing every thing right, and we keep getting smoked out when starting our modern EPA stove. Our outside chimney is insulated with rock wool, but it is impossible to warm it up to start the stove. I'm frustrated that people keep talking about non issues, and nobody is talking about how to warm your chimney up to get it to draft.

My parents always used a box or two of moth balls. When they had a nice red hot bed in the fireplace they would throw in a box of mothballs and soon you would see black flakes falling into the fire.

He's inferring that if the chimney is to short there might not be enough draft for the fireplace / wood stove / pellet stove. Not sure how you can calculate that daft without bringing the appliance and chimney up to temperature and measuring draft in W.C. Does anyone know where to find that formula or have a video explaining that?

I have a boiler outside in a house I just moved into. I was just inside the firebox yesterday, scraping out as much creosote as I possibly could, getting ready for winter. I noticed that there’s such a buildup of shiny, hard creosote inside the box, that looks like the rock “onyx.” How in the heck do I get that out?? 🤷🏻♀️

We had a chimney fire back in 2000 of so in a fireplace that was rarely used. It sucked so much air through the house it was unreal, papers were sucked from a nearby table and it burned for a few minutes. The asbestos liner was clean afterwards and no damage!

I haven't burned a fire in 10 yrs and decide i wanted to use this nice feature again. I only burn a few logs now & then and not as heat, more for ambience. I use to burn one of those logs before using my fireplace. Today i had an inspection for the 1st time ever in 25 yrs and he said my chimney was actually pretty clean & in no danger. Surprised me. But im getting some crumbling crown mason repair & a new top lock damper as my old firebox damper has seen better days. So maybe those logs do help? But I'd def have cleanings.

Just pay the $300 once per year for a professional sweep and inspection performed with a camera. Burn your wood dry, and hot, and once in awhile thrown in a creosote burning log. Why fool around with burning your house down or killing your family to save $300 bucks. Nuts!

We used to live in an old house with brick chimneys until 1961. Chimney Swifts nested there yearly, as well as in most old houses in the area. I used to look at a nest through a capped stove pipe opening. The nest was out of reach several feet below. I once stuck my hand in there and caught the bird as it tried to fly up to escape. After examining the bird, I released it back into the chimney. The nest contained at least 5 white eggs. Eventually, that chimney was lined and capped once a wood stove was added. Other old houses were knocked down or upgraded. I have noticed almost no Chimney Swifts flying and chirping lately when there used to be many, especially just before evening.

I usually start burning wood mid to late October and finish mid to late April we only burn wood for heating our 1800sq foot home chimney sweeping log will use 2 season one at start season and one at the end of season to protect my liner over the summer they work great but you still half to sweep your chimney every 6 weeks if burn like me here in 🇨🇦

I just cut a few cedar saplings and let them get about half dried out. Then, once a year, stuff them in bottom of chimney and light a fire under them. That hot burn from the cedar would light off the deposits in it and burn them out. Looked like a jet out the top of the chimney. Di it when it's raining or real heavy fog or you might light surrounding stuff.😊

The biggest problem is people burning garbage wood. Burning seasoned hardwood is best but allow the chimney to heat up by letting your stove be inefficient once in a while. Open up the dampers and contribute to global warming

Is stainless steel better at surviving a chimney fire or would it also still get damaged? I imagine after this incident you'd have to completely replace the chimney right? That would be a pretty big task for masonry.

Glass doors that can be closed to cut off the oxygen are a good idea. No air, no fire.

@@lizmego2445 unseasoned wood burns out the moisture which takes longer for the wood to burn. You will know it if you have a chimney fire which sounds like a jet. Just keep those glass doors closed when fireplace is unattended. Cheney fires need a lot of oxygen which is the key to not having a chimney fire in the first place. Secondly, dry wood has less sap( moisture) that causes creosote build up which fuels chimney fires.

An old mountain man told me a secret way to clean a chimney. Toss a large russet potato into your woodstove once a week. The chemicals in the burning potato dries up the creosote deposits causing rhem to dry out and fall back into your firebox. It works i used this technique for 10 years. Looking up into my chimney the coatings are dry and look like soot. No creosote deposits anywhere.

I just built a Masonry chimney using a product called Chimtek..all the Amish families I know use Chimtek and they all recommend it..I wanted to find out for myself if the liner and chimney would hold up to a chimney fire just like the manufacturer said..so I took a scrap piece to work and heated it up with an oxygen/acetylene rose bud torch..I blasted the end for 2 minutes and it was glowing orange..I could see some puddling like it was making glass...at the end .there were no cracks or distortion.. can't believe it..I feel super confident about this chimney and can't wait to use this coming Friday.. 🔥

I seen a couple comments on terra cotta liner for a masonry chimney...i can see the cracks and wondering what people think about a Chimtek product...it is a pumice based liner ans supposed to not crack .all the Amish families i know use Chimtek exclusively..i just built one myself.i had a stove for 23 years with a stainless class A chimney but never felt comfortable leaving the house with a fire going and I swept the chimney and stove annually..

@@paulnicholson1906 does it have too? I just bought my house and theres no liner. Will do liner if I do a insert but all new inserts seem to be crap. I'm sure if an insert is used then inspector would want 2 see a spec sheet thats ok with saftey and EPA.
@paulnicholson1906 Жыл бұрын
@@ez8628 I think it does. Certainly just brickwork isn’t kosher as it can leak flue gasses into the house. With an insert you used to be able to just insert the pipe into a clay lined chimney but I think these days they want a pipe running up to the top. Not exactly the same but when my water heater was replaced they even did that. Seems excessive but you have to find out from your insurance company what they want since if your house catches fire you don’t want to have them figure a way to get out of paying.

The old timers knew how to build a chimney with the brick and mortar right up against the flue tile so the expansion and contraction of the tile couldn’t happen and crack. Yes it “might” do some damage to the exterior of the chimney, but I would rather repoint the outside instead of having to install a stainless liner. Today you have an 1”-2” air gap in between the brick and tile when building, so yes now it’s going to expand, contract and crack.

I converted to gas fireplace when moving into home 20 years ago. However shortly after using fireplace within a couple months I began to smell gas. I had someone come out said no gas leak. Could be downdraft? What should I do have it cleaned? It didn’t have a gas odor when I first began to use it. Please help me Thank you! I never used it now for 20 years. It happened to both fireplaces. No one could tell me what to do
@Kramto Жыл бұрын
Something is leaking or the burners are not operating properly if you smell gas. Make sure the burners are cleaned and burning 100% of the gas. May still have a drafting issue but you should not smell gas. Have the gas company or fire department check for gas....they have good equipment.
