How I would help the earth, invest more in nuclear power. Both nuclear fission and nuclear fusion. Nuclear material that is used properly has a half life that's far easier to store than 30k years, plus no carbon emissions. I would also promote bioplastics. Plastic waste is a bigger issue than we seem to believe. Third, I would penalize companies for carbon emissions.

Maybe the issue is how our economic system functions? Corporations are expected to grow and increase shareholder value as their top priority. People need jobs and are also in a position to maintain their security through a consistent income stream. We all are part of the problem, but we don't have a good solution. It's a constant struggle to maintain a balance between caring for people and society through job creation, supporting retirement funds through stock value appreciation and caring for the environment. There is no easy answer. I think most of us are aware this is happening, but fearful that if we change the system we'll all starve.

I'm afraid we very much didn't - or rather it's more complex than that. The American accent today is different to the accent we shared as we colonized North America. You can find examples online as reciting Shakespeare with a period accent is something that is studied here (and presumably in other countries too). The closest American accent to that accent (that you can still listen to) was the old southern accent (you can find an example of that in "Gone with the Wind") but that's no longer spoken in America. New England does still use some of the same cadences but the accents diverged very rapidly due to mixing with Spanish colonists and to a greater degree in the age of piracy where the accent was constantly mixed up with Caribbean accents and fresh influxes of new English settlers (who by then had a new set of accents) So while a Linguist will note aspects of the modern American accents that relate to old English - if you heard it? you'd not think it was the same. (It sounds more Australian to my ear - which makes sense given that was our prison colony) Far closer to the original accent than either of ours would be the settlers on Pitcairn island - who are the survivors of a mutiny aboard Captain Cook's ship "Bounty" (so there's a little island in the middle of nowhere where everybody is descended from that crew and they speak like British people did in the 1750s - very cool)

Couldn't agree more. That would assume that there's a standard British accent that has somehow changed, when in fact it's exactly the reverse...that Britain has a bewildering number of accents...even now, some of which contributed to the American accent and some of which didn't. The dialects further north still use flatter vowels and are more rhotic, just like America and just like they've always done. There are even some fast-disappearing US accents...like the Ocracoke brogue of N. Carolina, which sound really weird to Americans, but to a Brit just sound like someone from Norfolk or maybe Devon or Cornwall. It's the "Oi be a farmer Oi be." stereotype. There a video devoted to that here on YT. I think the problem is that many American think that all common Brits speak with a SE or London accent which has somehow changed from sounding more like they do. Whereas that accent had very little effect on American pronunciation but a heck of an effect of Australian.

@@alfresco8442 - Thank you and yes very pertinent points! I'd add that there are some interesting accents related to pirates - a lot of (british) pirates were Cornish! (and yes - our large array of accents is shocking even when you've grown up here. In the States accent can stay the same for hundreds of miles. Here I can tell the difference between Wolverhampton and Birmingham)
