I had the procedure done almost 2 weeks ago to relieve pinched nerves between L4 and L5 and had a partial fusion. I now have bad nerve pain in my left leg that I didn’t have before. I reported it and have been prescribed Neurotin, but have pain after a week on Neurotin. Will this go away eventually? Before I only had back pain and shots in my back only relieved pain for 3-4 weeks.

Thanks to all these people providing information on their surgery outcomes. It has taught me to never allow spine fusion unless I’m completely unable to live/move.

So now we know the shortcomings of this fusion procedure, what are the percentage rates this is likely to occur in a patient's lifetime especially if theyd been fused young like those with scoliosis. More importantly, what is the likelihood these problems and the pain they cause is alleviated succesfully with either hardware revision and/or more fusion to a patient's quality of life, are they likely to be satisfied, is the problem likely to reoccur ?

My question is: If the person who has nothing wrong with levels above L5-S1. Could they get a fusion of L5-S1 and not have any future problems? Just like you are saying that the disc replacement with healthy levels above or below could expect no future problems above and below?

Dr. Aslie, do you still believe Fusion for L5/S1 is better over Disc Replacement for a 33 year old male? I am scheduled for Fusion this November but am wondering about the Replacement. You were my doctor about 4 years ago. -Braden Roberts

Is there a chance that the Disc can herniate easily after surgery because of the portion of the disc wad removed?

Hi Dr.I want to know how long the recovery is for a disc replacement. I'm sixty years old jumped off a military truck and injured my back. No surgery just pain meds and rest. My back has hirt off and on since. Good days bad days. In 2010 I was in a car accident which eventually caused me to have to have a hip replacement had that five years ago. My last x-ray showed that I have four bulging disc, Cauda Equina Syndrome, sciatica L2, L3, L4, L5 degenerative getting worse as the numbers get bigger. I'm to see a surgeon soon, but I definitely don't want to have a surgery that would take me a year to recover. Are there specifically new implants that are better than the first original implants and what is your suggestion, constantly lose bladder and bowel functions

1 week out of “open” L4 for a far lateral inter and extra foraminal herniation from downhill mtn biking and 30+ years of sports. Misdiagnosed so was doing yoga 3 months later when disc exploded…worse pain in my life worse than childbirth and worse than kidney stones. Waited 7 months for the surgery leg pain is gone but yup my back hurts. Nothing like the nerve pain however. Focused now on losing weight and healing. No more downhill mtn biking but at age 47 I’ve decided to accept that as well as no more snowboarding. Again, willing to accept to not be walking without a cane.

Dr. you left out the important part. What do you do with the herniated disk? Do you shave off part of the disk? What happens with the left over disk? Are you going to saw it up to stop the leaking or what happens to it?
@tiborzkarate1
@tiborzkarate1 8 ай бұрын
So you have to break out part of the vertebra to able to excess the herniated disk. Is that bone breaking will not be an issue after surgery? Also I still don't understand that what happens with the disk , heal itself it's not going to herniate again ?

12 yrs ago would make this video, 2011-2012. I'm sure things have changed in 12 yrs. I have an appt on the 14th to see what treatments are available to me regarding issues at the L5- S1. hopefully this is an option. But 10-12 yrs. of disk herniation may restrict my options but fusions is definitely not one. I'm looking for the least amount of hardware. It all depends on my film etc.

Have you heard of Enande in Germany? My wife has a badly herniated disc on L5-S1 or L4-L5, I can't remember. But we heard of Dr. Ritter Lang at Enande/Stenum in Germany and they have many many good testimonials. We are tentatively planning on getting a disc replacement in April. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJuykmNrfJdrkLc

What are your thoughts on “failed back surgery syndrome”? I have SCS that’s not as effective anymore for ortho pain. Now being offered pain pump despite stenosis and nerve impingement that causes intractable pain. Experts tell me unless I have serious leg symptoms bladder or bowl problems they no longer operate. I’ve been in excruciating pain for too long SCS helps but constant problems. I want a real solution not masking pain.

I had a 2 level fusion can't remember exactly but was S1 to L5. Very traumatic experience. I see you like to use cars as an example. An engine mounting will be great, flexible but ridget.

Jan 2023 Had Spondylolisthesis unstable grade 3/4. Apparently it’s a 2/4 post surgery. Spine crushed into pelvis. Procedure to fix was ALIF one cage, S1/L5 Pedicle screws & rods (4 total). Felt amazing for 6 weeks post op. Suddenly had debilitating pain. MRI shows 2 loosened Pedicle screws on both sides (1/2 is debilitating more than I was prior to surgery). Surgeon keeps stating “bone fused successful”, overseeing L4 is still junked up & screws are failing. I can feel my Rod on the side that hurts the most. It’s ruining my life. I am trying to do all the research I can

I had a L1/L2 lumbar laminectomy and discectomy done just yesterday due to foot drop. Though they fixed the herniation/extrusion, because it took about a month between the development of foot drop and when I had my surgery, there is some doubt about whether my foot drop will improve.

Dear Dr., I know you are a very busy surgeon and I understand if you cannot answer. I am a 32 y/o female who has 7 year old twins and a widdow. I hurt my back lifting some medical equipment at work. I am a rep in the OR. ( I do not work in spine). I work in general sx and Batiatrics. I have had a EMG, and a MRI. They both show moderate disk bulge central posterior left greater than right L5 and SI. The pain was holding steady for the past year at about a 4/10 with 800 mg ibuprofen 1-2 times a week. Over the 4th of July I went for a light jog and the next day I was in so much pain I had to go to the ER. I cannot to a SLR on the left past 30 deg hip flexion and cannot do a bridge or sit up on my own in bed without 9/10 pain. I cannot sleep or drive. I do not know what to do. I’m wondering what your thoughts are. It has been over a year since my date of injury.
