I was excited when they installed ATSC 3 here in the Atlanta market. The single tower has ABC, FOX, NBC, CBS, and Peachtree TV (CW). Like you, I wanted it for a more reliable signal. I finally figure out where to put the antennas (I use 3) in the attic and am now getting all the ATSC 1.0 channels clear as bell too. Go figure. But I like the ATSC 3 channels. The scale better on my Sony TV and look a bit sharper.

12 Reasons why OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. Just say NO to (DRM). Tell your USA Government about the Hostile Takeover of (OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV) issues listed below. DRM (Digital Rights Management) Encrypted TV Station's signals. Why? Some 3.0 tuners at this time require you stay on the internet to decode DRM 3.0 TV Stations. Why? 3.0 Currently no 4K and you only get the Simulcasted main channel and no sub channels. Channel Crawling = super slow channel changing (DRM 5 + seconds slow). No sound because of Dolby AC4 audio codec does not have a legal open source license to decode legally on many devices. Some 3.0 tuners have Out of sync audio to video problems. Private Home Networked OTA antenna tuner boxes like (Tablo TV box) can not get official certified approval for DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. Why? You may need non OTA home pay internet for updates and to unlock DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 tv channels. Possible DRM restrictions on DRM ATSC 3.0 recordings and no viewing anywhere on any device with no sound. Emergency alert messages can not be received if DRM is blocking them. OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail because the FCC is not going to turn off ATSC 1.0 TV stations for many years if not enough people buy 3.0 TVs and 3.0 boxes. So some TV stations will be on 1.0 and others will be on DRM 3.0. The FCC is only allowing OTA Simulcasts of the ATSC 1.0 main channel at this time on DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. here. I'll try to help you. >> DRM (Digital Rights Management) Encrypted TV Station's signals. Why? DRM sucks. no question. we need to force the FCC to make the broadcasters remove it. >> Some 3.0 tuners at this time require you stay on the internet to decode DRM 3.0 TV Stations. Why? They use the internet to get the decryption keys. Some products have the decryption key embedded in the product. Word is these expire in 10 years and will need to be updated. >> 3.0 Currently no 4K and you only get the Simulcasted main channel and no sub channels. Correct. Its going to take a bit of time to start receiving 4K OTA broadcasts. There are no subchannels because you can only fit so many channels on a single tower, which is how ATSC 3.0 is currently being delivered to most markets. In heavily congested markets, there are no free RF channels. >> Channel Crawling = super slow channel changing (DRM 5 + seconds slow). Agreed. >> No sound because of Dolby AC4 audio codec does not have a legal open source license to decode legally on many devices. certified ATSC 3.0 products have the AC4 codec. this is going to be a problem for products like Plex and Channels DVR, even though the latest version of FFMPEG will modify AC4 to AC3. >> Some 3.0 tuners have Out of sync audio to video problems. Yep. I understand these issues are with the broadcasters. >> Private Home Networked OTA antenna tuner boxes like (Tablo TV box) can not get official certified approval for DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. Why? getting certified is expensive. the price needs to come down so Silicon Dust and Tablo can build a certified home gateway. >>. You may need non OTA home pay internet for updates and to unlock DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 tv channels. If the hardware manufacturers require internet for their product to work, then don't buy it. Pretty simple. >>. Possible DRM restrictions on DRM ATSC 3.0 recordings and no viewing anywhere on any device with no sound. Yea, they are still working on the DVR issues. >>. Emergency alert messages can not be received if DRM is blocking them. True. But these things will be worked out as the standard matures. Still in the very early stages. >>. OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail because the FCC is not going to turn off ATSC 1.0 TV stations for many years if not enough people buy 3.0 TVs and 3.0 boxes. Roll over to ATSC 3 is voluntary. We'll see how it goes. >>. No one has solve the problem of no government money for free DRM 3.0 TV tuner boxes because 1.0 TV turners and recorders will not work after that TV Station switches to 3.0 TV broadcasts. Sounds like somebody just wants free stuff. The price. of ATSC 3.0 tuner boxes still needs to come down a bit. I believe the cheapest is around $100? >>. (Range and signal error correction) OR (more sub channels and near 4k picture) trade off problem. not familiar with what you are talking about here. ATSC 3 is a more robust spec and allows better pictures at lower reliablity. >>. FCC is not forcing any 1.0 TV Stations to move over to 3.0 TV. So some TV stations will be on 1.0 and others will be on DRM 3.0. so? >>. The FCC is only allowing OTA Simulcasts of the ATSC 1.0 main channel at this time on DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. There are internet stations, in Miami I believe, that broadcast their station info, and when you select the channel its comes in as a streaming channel. But right now, for the initial rollout, why would I want anything other than the main channel? As mentioned earlier, the spectrum is full, and sub channels will come in time as stations fully move to ATSC 3. >> DRM ATSC 3.0 is a not finished product and is a work in progress mix of unproven ideas that has never gotten full FCC approval at this time. The main portion of the specification is complete, otherwise, they wouldn't be rolling out. DVR and home gateway is still a work in progress. www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-authorizes-next-gen-tv-broadcast-standard-0 >>. Software updates for 3.0 tuner boxes may be needed for changes made to the unfinished and future added new official ATSC 3.0 standards modules. Beyond receiving and decoding ATSC 3 signals, everything else is third party. >>. Patent License problems. LG no longer sells TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners. Yea, that sucks and is just stupid. I personally don't mind paying a little more for the cost of the patents. >>. Some 3.0 TV tuners companies may go out of business or stop updates leaving you with no DRM or software updates. ATSC 3.0 is in its infancy. Jump in early at your own risk. My ATSC 3 product supports ATSC 1.0 just fine. >>. OTA ATSC 3.0 is better but is not perfect and still can be affected by weak tv signals: (distance, weather, planes, trees, buildings, trucks, poor antenna, etc). So? Every RF signal can be weakened and interrupted. Has nothing to do with ATSC 3. >>. FCC rules that 5 percent of old ATSC 1.0 coverage area does not need to be covered anymore = (SHORTER RANGE). ATSC 3 supports simulcast and is not affected by multipath interference. Thus allowing stations to increase their coverage with cheap repeaters. >>. Viewing zone outside of your 15 minute city or town could be blocked. How exactly is that supposed to happen? are they going to put the town in an RF blocking bubble? >> Your TV viewing habits could be tracked by your serial number or IP address. Agreed. I think ATSC 3 may be tracking viewer habits if the device has an internet connection. >>. ATSC 3.0 is updatable until it is not updatable without new hardware tuners (ATSC 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0......). True of any piece of new hardware/software. Although once it becomes ubiquitous, it tends to take on a life of its own. >>. Some of these 3.0 TV issues may be fixed over time. Agreed. Its early! and I'm an early adopter :) >> This is only some of the mess with DRM ATSC 3.0 TV. >> This is my opinion why DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. Very well may fail, but like I said, my TV does ATSC 1.0 just fine. >>. IMO. Stay on OTA 1.0 TV until DRM is removed from OTA ATSC 3.0 by law. I was curious if the FCC has to have a law requiring this transition or if its already within their power to do so.... >>. It is the people versus the hostile takeover by private DRM 3.0 TV stations for control over the USA public airwaves. The public airwaves belong to the American people, who license the RF frequencies to companies at auction. What a lease is secured, the company's can do what they want with it within FCC guidelines. What can be given can be take away.

Well, these boxes are fine for what they do, but for me, I just want a couple more tuners that will hook to my m1 without attaching an antenna to it. If I have to attach my antenna, that splits the signal so my strength goes down leading to video skips. I don't need more storage or the ability to hook up another TV, just a cheap way to add a couple tuners. I like the m1, but it should have come with 3 or 4 tuners in the same box. And paying another 200 plus , along with having to hook the antenna to it. Just not going to fly in my houshold.

What drove me to prefer ZapperBox over the other options is the amount of activity and help from the team at ZapperBox. They have a good presence on various social media outlets and answer customer service questions quickly. So far they have been good to deal with and I like that. I also like the frequent drive for updates and new features as well, and for me the ZapperBox just seems like a better product. Everyone's mileage can vary but for me that helped me decide. My guess both brands have their pros and cons but not having used a HDHomeRun, I have no 1st hand experience. Maybe watch other folks videos on KZbin to see what they are like? My guess both work for what they are designed for and can get the job done. I can only say I am a fan of ZapperBox as that is the route I took. Good luck with whatever direction you go.

Great video. Could you do a 1 year update and let us know what you likes and dislikes of the Fjorden grip? I've been interested in buying the Fjorden grip since this video came out. However, I've had some concerns 1) is the magnet strong enough to securely hold the iPhone? 2) will the controls work with the Apple native camera? 3) will the controls work with other camera apps like CinemaP3?
@MacSociety
@MacSociety 5 күн бұрын
Been super busy with work so no immediate plan to make another video but here are my findings so far. The magnet seems fine but not super tight when on a tripod. Fine for basics but I would not lift up tripod and move around with phone on it if using the magney tripod device. But overall it seems tight enough for basics. I think the controls only partially work for a couple things. I have only used with the Fjorden app though so don't have much data there. Overall the grip is nice but I only use when on trips and such, not every day use. Even though it is small, the grip still adds weight and girth so I tend to not leave it on for every day use. Is nice when we are on vacation walking around and we want to take pictures. That seems the best time for us to use ours.

I want to love a QL; it's like when you hear its got a Motorola 68k derivative in it your ears prick up...... the slick design with the lines inspires..... but then you boot it up and it's disappointment compared to the ST and Amiga. in my opinion the best 8 and 16 bit machines were designed by Jay Miner - the Atari 800 - 8-bit machines and the 16-bit Amiga. The custom hardware was what made those machines sing. {I'm an Atari 8 bit guy too really from that period} I even felt the Atari ST was ok at launch but I switched to Amiga after a year.
@MacSociety

Yeh, and its use is quirky too. For me Atari or Amiga with mouse use just makes sense. Easy 3.5 floppy access and no convoluted command line like the QL. Just seems harder to use than it should be and why I tend to not use much. Maybe one day I will have more time to explore it.
