Thank you for composing such Beautiful Cantatas for choirs and musicians to perform at church! Is there an online soundtrack available for choirs to practice with? We sang one of your Cantatas last year and will be performing this Cantata for 2023. 🙏🎶

WAS IT JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA WHO RETRIEVED JESUS' BODY FROM THE TOMB...AND IF SO, WHY? Since this is Holy Week, as many Christians call it, the last few days of the earthly life of Jesus, there will be millions of believers declaring Jesus rose from the dead three days after he was executed on the cross around 2000 years ago. Most will just say they believe this to be true as a matter of faith and faith alone. However, there are more than a few Christian apologists who say they can prove Jesus rose from the dead! One in particular, even wrote a book a few decades ago, claiming he had solid evidence that Jesus had to have risen from the dead because, as he reasoned, none of Jesus' disciples would have moved the stone covering his tomb to steal his dead body and secretly dispose of it, only to turn around and spend the rest of their lives acting as if they really believed him to have risen, especially since many of them went to a martyr's death and not a single one ever confessed his subterfuge. It's a pretty good argument; one I completely agree with! There's just one little problem with this "proof" that Jesus must have risen from the dead, because there is no other way to explain how the heavy stone covering his tomb could have been moved BY HIS DISCIPLES...because it wasn't Jesus' disciples who moved it! What no one ever hardly talks about are the fascinating details all the Canonical Gospel accounts provide about the man who arranged to obtain Jesus' body in the first place--a rich member of the Sanhedrin (the most powerful Jewish governing body at the time) named Joseph of Arimathea. Though there are some discrepancies between the Gospel accounts, they all agree it was Joseph of Arimathea who hastily put Jesus' body in a tomb near the site of his execution, just in the nick of time before the Jewish Sabbath began (that is, on a holy day when it was strictly forbidden for Jews to perform anything that was deemed "work"), and it was all he could do to find some linen at a nearby market to wrap up Jesus' bloodied and soiled corpse but, very tellingly, without any of the, otherwise, customary funeral preparations--like washing the body, then applying perfumes and oils, and then performing a modicum of other funeral rites and prayers. Instead, all that had to wait! Now, this wasn't the plan! By all rights, Joseph of Arimathea should have had plenty of time to get everything needed for a quick funeral, but with Pontus Pilate taking his sweet time to give him custody of the body, by the time he got to the local market, whoever it was that normally sold funerary perfumes and oils had already packed it in for the day...after all, the Sabbath was soon approaching! Joseph of Arimathea did, probably after a hectic search, come across some fine linen, but that was it! Now, we're told Mary Magdalene and perhaps one or two other of Jesus' female supporters stayed with Jesus at the cross, and were close enough to see where Jesus' body was placed once Joseph of Arimathea (along with a couple of his slaves) finally got back with just the burial linens. Surely, they must have been a nervous wreck by then, with the sun dial edging ever closer to when they were required by religious law to hurry back to wherever they were staying! We don't know what, if anything, Joseph of Arimathea talked about with Mary and the other women, but it's what was NOT said that makes the Gospel accounts so revealing--clearly, especially given the hurry to get Jesus interred, there was no coordination between Joseph of Arimathea and the women about how they were going to come back later to complete Jesus' proper burial! After all, by that next, fateful Sunday morning, the women had spent most of their time, during their horrific grief. busying themselves with making the oils and perfumes from scratch, but only on the way to the cemetery finally asked themselves, "Who is going to move the stone covering the tomb?" To make a long story short, there is one scenario that would, indeed, fit very well into all the other details we have from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John--that it was Joseph of Arimathea who sent his slaves to discreetly retrieve the body of Jesus after the Sabbath was over at sundown (Saturday evening), taking it back to his villa and, in all likelihood, fully expecting to finish up the burial the next (Sunday) morning when all the shops would reopen, the rest of the ointments could be obtained, and after making a few prayers, just as discreetly place Jesus back in the tomb. Problem solved...well, not quite! Before Joseph of Arimathea had any chance of taking care of this, shall we say, "glitch," a rumor began spreading like a wild fire all over Jerusalem--"Jesus is alive!!!" Imagine how Joseph's heart sank when he got the word, as he's standing there looking at Jesus' body and thinking to himself, "Pilate is NOT going to see what I was planning to do with an amicable sense of reason! He is, no doubt, going to have me crucified since he is now going to blame ME for playing him, all the while plotting to fake a resurrection!" So, yeah, Joseph of Arimathea had little choice but to have his slaves dispose of Jesus' body in some secret location, probably swore them to life-long secrecy after giving them papers of manumission and tickets on the next boat for as far away as they could go from Palestine...and took his secret to the grave! I know, I know. This isn't what most Christians want to hear. We've been told for centuries Jesus conquered death and that, by doing so, he made a way for us to have life after death as well. But was even THAT the real message of Jesus? There is very little in the Gospel accounts of Jesus making the case he had come to give people life after death, and in the few places where the subject came up, he quickly turned the conversation toward living a full life in the here and now! Perhaps, it is finally time for Christians and anyone who would care to know what, in all likelihood, Jesus was really like and what he actually hoped to accomplish that final week of his life. Using reference monitors, I almost cannot hear the bass bells. They should have had their own microphones so as not to rely solely on the mic's in front of the treble and battery or if they were mic'd (I don't see any microphones in the recording) the track should have been equalized with more bass. Too bad, since it's otherwise an excellent performance.

Thank you, Christene......with all my degrees in music, hand bell ringing was just something else that was happenstance......my wife is ringing with a premiere group in the DFW are......she's been ringing for 30 some odd years......and now, again.....happen stance......she twisted my arm into ringing......with my musical experience, I found that when beginning to ring, all I had going for me was reading bass and treble clef......I've directed orchestras, choirs, been a pianist since four years old...talk about humbled beyond all recognition! You're an outstanding musician.......and a huge inspiration.....both, in hand bell ringing, and in your ministry for Christ.....thank you.

Absolutely one of the very best hand bell soloists on the planet. Now, I have an ear worm with this.....(That's good for you!)/ What's even worse......my wife rings with Cast of Bronze. She comes in and I'm watching this video......."Oh, watching your new girlfriend?" Nope, sorry...but you have much respect from a very picky musician here..........excellent!

I would not call this a large print hymnal. It is a great selection of hymns and the spiral binding makes them easy to open flat. but if you set this next to a traditional hymnbook, the size of the text is very similar in size, not at all noticeably larger. That was the main reason I had for purchasing 40 of them, large type!
