your catenary system looks great . I have decided I will try to fabricate/3d print some for my layout but I am at a loss as to where to find dimensional information. Could you provide me with a couple of critical dimensions? What is the depth of the main truss/beam? What is the height from the base to the underside of the truss? what is the dimension between the two trusses/ it would be great if you could help me with this. Thanks in advance. Charlie
@colcester Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I do not have these measurements. The masts were laser cut kits and the cantilever arms are by Dapol so these were items that were already set measurements. For the masts I created I did not keep any notes of the measurements as you can hear me say in the video, the gauging of the arms and length of mast was by eye and depended a lot on the track configuration where it was being placed.

It's always hard taking apart a layout (I know I have done this many times) but with each layout you learn something different on how to and not do things! If I could offer one piece of advice I would sort out the insulation in the shed before you rebuild the layout as it will save you frustration in the long run. I recently did my garage using the silver bubble wrap stuff and it has made a huge difference as first it keeps the heat in during the winter and secondly it will keep the heat out in the summer so you will end up with a railway room with a more constant temperature throughout the year. This in turn will prevent a lot of the issues with damp and track issues like expanding rails. Also don't forget to insulate the floor as well as it's surprising how much cold can come from there! I think I have spent roughly £100 doing my 17'x8' garage so it's not that expensive given the cost of a lot of the locos and rolling stock these days. With regards to baseboards I used 12mm ply for my baseboard frames on Wemblesden and 9mm for the top. This has been fairly reliable over the past 5 years although I did have to fit some additional cross braces under the fiddle yard boards as they did develop a bit of a sag in the middle. Just a suggestion it might be worth thinking about building the baseboards so that they could be removed from the shed if required at a later date. With the exception of the newer inner boards all mine are just 4'x2'. Anyway take care and I look forward to seeing the new layout take shape. :)
@colcester3 жыл бұрын
Great minds must think alike then Dave, when I originally started on this shed layout because I wanted to use Sundeala boards I knew they were modular in design so the boards were done in a way that areas like the Depot, the main station and storage yard are all able to be removed as a whole section. Insulation in the shed wasn't the problem and the temperatures didn't directly effect the shed inside, what happened was the shed settled after being in its position for about 3yrs, the movement seems to of caused the internal frame of the boards to move just enough to open up some gaps and make the Sundeala drop in a couple of areas, thus effectively altering track levels around the layout... and you know how fussy DCC can be about interrupted power supply...!! I could actually fix it by going under the boards and adding additional strength to the framework all over, but the opportunity to revise the track plan rather than the odd bit here and there was too good to miss, plus the new plan will require a start on the garden section too, something which I've kind of been putting off - but the new plan requires some use of the outdoor section as an extended loop to hide a couple of trains on (weather permitting) to then run the layout at its maximum. When not in use the storage yard will suffice. I think it will be hard tearing up stuff, but the new plan is based alot on the existing one, so elements like the Furman Smithy village board will slot back in again, and other items like the Depot, Furman Smithy Station, Colcester Lower Crossing and even the International Station itself will move or be altered just a bit to fit in.

Hi Colin- You are correct in making the changes to improve running and I did the same but exciting times in the re build.
@colcester3 жыл бұрын
Yep, one disastrous planned running session in September 2020 showed me that my original track work was far from ideal and that drastic changes were required to make it run properly. It put me off so much that it's taken since then until now for me to even go back up the shed again, it really pissed me off.. I was about midway through my chemotherapy treatment and just starting to feel like things were getting better and then the layout fails to work and deliver the planned running session I wanted to do. The new plan will be alot more streamlined, longer radius points, crossovers and double slips to save some space. Once we restart track laying, the outdoor section will commence too, I've been putting that off for far too long..!

New Sub from Barnabas Junction: Looking forward to your build! - Jason
@colcester4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the sub... It will be a rebuild of sorts, new baseboards going in and rectifying some issues with the framework, but the basic plan will remain in place because one item, the Furman Smithy village board, has already been built and dictate where certain scenic areas need to go on the main layout. There will be some repositioning of some areas and improved track work too, but essentially the same Colcester International will emerge from the ashes...!

Thanks Kev, the whole Village board is nearly ready to join the layout, I just have to prepare the area first where its going in. When we first started putting masts on the board the idea was to use Dapol wires, but these are far too fragile and dont have sufficient tension in them, so I got some Peco wires and adapted them to attach to Dapol masts. However there was a further issue in that the track geometry of Colcester doesn't work well with commercially produced wires so I thought about using cotton thread, but as can be seen in the film I dont feel this was as successful as I had hoped it would be so I might go back to commercial Peco wires and adapt them further to fit the Colcester track layout.

Hi Mark, thanks for the comment and I hope your staying safe too... As for your question, these Terrace houses were picked up at a trade stand at a model railway show just before the lockdown, they are of unknown make to me although I suspect they might be from the Metcalfe range and definitely made from card, although not all buildings on Colcester are like this, we have resin cast and MDF laser cut ones too.. I have to say, your layout plans are very interesting and sound like they will be a wonderful mix of British and American scenes and will be quite a challenge I suspect, I hope as with all model railway projects that it goes well for you, although I can say from experience that Colcester has not only caused quite a few instances of swearing and frustration, but also drawn actual blood from me in my pursuit to get it up and running. But then, I wouldn't have it any other way...lol.! 😁😄
@bhigdaddymark4 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, hope that you're safe and well. Enjoyed the video as always. I do have a question, are the terrace houses made out of plastic or are they Scalescenes? My idea for a two themed (traditional American and British countryside/village/small to medium city) layout would include buildings of all sorts and I much prefer plastic commercial/residential buildings for durability and I didn't get the impression that Scalescenes used plastic parts for building assembly. It's a daydream for the second large layout of which both will be in a large space, the second or two themed layout would be based on what New Jersey is to NYC since my principle layout will be based on the NYC subway for Manhattan and the Bronx. Why I'm splitting the two for the 2nd layout is because of my love for and ownership of four sets of British OO-gauge trains (Class 221DMU, Class 350, Pendolino Class 390 and my favourite the London Underground) and my desire to run them in the proper environment best suited for them and the additional OO gauge models that I plan on buying. The train tech who works on all of my trains in HO, OO and O scales is from Liverpool and will hopefully design and build the British section of the 2nd layout for authenticity. I much prefer that all of the buildings for that section of the layout be of plastic as opposed to what Scalescenes uses. Your thoughts please and thanks! Be safe!

I absolutely LOVE what ALL of the British Railway modelers are doing! Such inspiration as it's a complete joy to watch your videos and that of others from the UK. What are the dimensions of your superb layout? I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has start/stop issues with the Class 350 (yes, I'm an American very much into OO-gauge passenger rail). You, Dean Park Station, Lakeside, Everard Junction and others whom I admire, but my poor memory won't let me remember their names right now, do fantastic videos. Anyway, I'm inspired by you and those named for your beautiful layouts. Thanks and all of the best to you!
@colcester4 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you Mark... I think you did a pretty good job with remembering those layout names - I would add New Junction, Cottesmore and Luciton St James to that list too. COLCESTER INTERNATIONAL board dimensions are 12ft by 8ft, there is a hell of a lot packed into this space to allow for two upper level running loops and one low level one. The upper level will also be getting an extended loop into the garden at some point this year. My Class 350 units generally behave with few issues however it was my fault not sending the track Cleaning wagon around beforehand which caused the problem. I'm so pleased to be an inspiration along with the other more esteemed companions you mentioned and I hope you carry on with your own layout, maybe start a channel or something, so we can sub to you and follow your progress too. Thank you for watching COLCESTER INTERNATIONAL today...!!
