Oh do I see there knotted gut frets on at least two of the contra / double basses? I thought that was only practiced until the end of the Baroque era. Interesting. Love the concerts ❤

one of the best Beethoven bands worldwide with 2 absolutely fantastical as well as authentic interpretations.. wonderful! (I habe to ipse such superlatives because they don't have such a great marketing budget as the major production firms...) // but after hearing the 5th symphony several times I miss a bit of balance and relaxes - the musicians appear a bit rushed...

When you put a Steinway with a modern orchestra this Concerto becomes a competition to see who s going to dominate. But put a period orchestra with a fortepiano - even a hulking beast of a fortepiano like this one - and it seems much more like a "We're all in this together" kind of shared music making.. with the keyboard and the band being of a piece.

These are truly wonderful performances IMO. For several decades I played in some of the top "period instrument" ensembles, so I think I know something about "historically informed performances". I do hope that the Freiburg and their soloists don't get discouraged or upset by the poorly-informed/dogmatic criticisms made below by a (very small) number of viewers. Re keyboard performances in the modern era, no self-respecting authority on JSB would prefer to play his organ music on a typical English cathedral organ rather than a Schnitger, so why does there still seem to be hostility to using the correct piano for Mozart and Beethoven? The "modern" grand piano isn't better or worse then the fortepiano, it's just very different. And it isn't the instrument that Beethoven composed for, anymore than the English cathedral organ isn't what JSB composed for. JSB's music just doesn't "work" on an English cathedral organ, and Beethoven doesn't "work" on a Steinway.

I can't agree on that. Beethoven played well over 100 years on all grand and upright pianos of the 19th and 20th centuries. His music is far bigger than this ridiculous argument about the alleged original instrument. To title a performance "Future Beethoven" is presumptuous and arrogant. Just because the instruments are similar to those of Beethoven's time doesn't mean the music is better understood. The audience lives in the 21st century and Beethoven's music is classic and timeless.

AKS: Hey Isabel! We are playing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concert this evening… IF: …seems like it! AKS: …yeah! in this wonderful theatre in Wolfsburg, constructed by Scharoun. And we also have in the mean time recorded (this concerto/album) together. I still want to ask a question about the concerto…whenever I get new students coming to me and I ask them what have they done and what they would like to work on, and I always ask what their dream piece would be, and their eyes start to light up and they say “Mendelssohn Concerto”. So I wanted to ask you how you yourself encountered this concerto? Also very early on?

what is that instrument ? it isn't a piano.. it does not have the harp, but it has dampeners so it's not a fortepiano... So this is might be a piano that Beethoven might have played.. or a faxsimile
@rileyclark6676

It is my understanding that this is a timely piano that Beethoven himself would have played on. Since this is a baroque orchestra, it is common for performers to perform on older versions of instruments IF NOT what was timely to the music they were playing. The reason why this piano sounds like a harp is because it is strung similarly to a harp. Modern Pianos are stringed diagonally while older pianos were stringed straight. This gives a different sound. Hope this helps and happy listening!!

@ Degsie This is an original 1830 Graf piano, the same kind of instrument Beethoven and Schubert played on. I don't think you know what you are talking about. The point of historical performances is to recreate the sound palette and performance practice of the past. You can't compare a modern interpretation with a historical original instrument one. You can't imagine or appreciate this performance unless you've played on an instrument of this period. The touch is incredibly quick and light, nothing like a Steinway. Bezuidenhout recorded this in 2020 using state-of-the-art technology with Pablo Heras-Casado, the Freiburger Barockorchester and played the same piano. You might appreciate the unique sound qualities that period instruments have and perhaps change your mind.

Finally the contra bassoon is sitting where it belongs. Next to the double basses. Though it only plays notes that the basses play, meaning it doubles the string basses which gives the piece the profound sound that it required.

Oooops... serious mishap at 28:32 where this fine pianist looses control playing some very wrong notes! Even the French horns were mixed up by the blunder sounding as coming in too early. Well... to err is human. Also the soloist added a lot of notes not written by Beethoven but at that time that type of improvisation was permissible under the category of "extemporization". His tempo was quite in the Carl Czerny style... wild and fast.
