There was honour amongst some combatants, that is to say the RAF & Luftwaffe as historically they were very distant relatives. I believe the Americans were too. Unsure about the Soviets but I doubt it. Of course there were others on both sides who just wanted to kill or be killed

Thanks for the comment and support on the channel Paul. Absolutely, there was a fair bit of Chivalry in the air mainly between the British and German Pilots. Very rarely would you find enemies with a personal vendetta. The pilots were just doing what were told to do and respected their enemies. How it should always be :)

This a/c, the Martin B-26 Maurauder, was from my age of <2 years old, my out & out favorite a/c of WWII, & still holds rank as the top medium bomber of the USAAF. ❤❤❤ ❤❤❤ She was beautiful, especially w/ her pointy tail & hauling a torpedo ❤❤❤

Thanks for the comment James! Love you enthusiasm. Some would say its not that beautiful but it is in the sense that when you look at it, it looks like an absolute tank. Had a rough start however ended with being the most loved by its crews (Since they got home to brag about it!) What are your thoughts on the B-25?

Sad. So many young men gone. RIP I'm living near Paris (France) the Park near my family house is called Park Arthur Clark in memory of the pilot of a B17 who crash landed there in the fields. He could have bailled out but he took his wreacked B17 away from the dense populated areas around Paris and crashed it near the today Orly airport.... an agriculture area that time.

Thanks for the comment Drago, we don't get many viewers from Paris! Wonderful to have you here. Absolutely, Most of these men were just kids and had such bravery and courage fighting for their freedom so far from home. We do our best to tell forgotten stories as they deserve it even after so many years.

@@FlakAlley An incredible photo. It strikes me. Blood chilling and there's so much life into it. You can see all those fields and imagine peasants doing the same work at nature's pace since the beggining of Mankind while knowing there were 6 people trapped into that tech wonder fighting just to stay in the air for one more breath. There's so much drama and beauty.... And the in debth quality of the photo is amasing. Then the right flapps up telling the tale of the fatal struggle of those airmen. .... As for planes crashing in Tampa Bay , the used to put a sign like "B26 infested areas" on poles at the place of "Shark infested areas". They did it for several stuborn airplanes keeping going for a swim in Tampa Bay instead of flying straight.

@@dragospeta3812 Great observation Drago, The photo is a beautiful shot of quite literally everything. Did not know about the Signs, very interesting. You seem to be a wealth of knowledge. Of course the B-26 had a very troubling start in service, it was more like a fighter than a bomber and the pilots were not ready for it. Once they figured it out, it became the toughest plane to bring down and the crews couldn't say enough good things about it as it brought them home. Please do share any other cool knowledge if you have any 😀

Thanks for the comment Daskritter, if you look at the image you can't really call it half a wing. It might be 1/3rd? As far as useful surface area goes as much of it is mangled. This title just has a better ring to it, Hope you understand!

The poor old B-26 was referred to by pilots as "The Baltimore Whore" because it had "no visible means of support". That was in reference to the short wingspan. However, the B-26 turned out to be a formidible aircraft due to it's rugged construction and great speed, the crews became very fond of their B-26.
@FlakAlley5 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the comment and support on the channel Timmyt. If you look at the Photo here 2:55 you'll see that the undamaged wing is little longer than the earlier variants. The wings on the B-26c was extended to help with the issue you have outlined. It Resembled a heavy fighter than a bomber, high power with stubby wings! Pilots just had to get used to flying a Hot-rod like this Marauder. Turned out in the end that it got the most crews home and took an absolute beating in the air. An absolutely Beautiful aircraft

Once the pilots became used to the high landing speeds and realized that the stubby wings were an advantage in combat, the old '26 became very popular.

Your thumbnail has the star pointing in the incorrect direction. The star point should point to the leading edge of the wing or up on the fuselage. So much for researching your topic.

They got out via parachute. Placing the bird on autopilot, if possible, was SOP. That's the only reason it didn't burn in. Still, the odds were astronomical.

@FlakAlley7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, Why do you find to be stupid Marco?
@MarcoHernandez-sw2yk6 күн бұрын
First of all, what you explain in the video is based on studies made just after WW I by the US Air Service, in which they analyzed pros and cons of several aircraft insignia. In these studies, they referred that it was not convenient to have roundels on both wings because of the bull's-eye effect, making it easier to spot more precise the main body of the aircraft against the background, besides that the insignia nullifies the concealment of the camouflage, but it was necessary for the correct aircraft identification by friendly ground troops, anti-aircraft artillery and other aircraft, with the main objective of avoiding friendly fire. But it's just a psychological and visual effect, the term 'psychological warfare' is used incorrectly. The main reason was not to deviate the aiming of the enemy pilot as you affirm. In this study they even recommended to use a 3-color band in the upper and lower surface of the wing, instead of a roundel because most countries used them and to avoid confusion. This was not adopted and returned instead to the star inside a circle. In the interwar years camouflage was abandoned but in the late 30's and during the war, several changes were made in aircraft painting and insignia, mainly to reduce aircraft visibility and misidentification by friendly troops. Like the elimination of the red circle by on their roundel by USN, USAAC, RAF, and RNAS in the Pacific Theater of Operations, different aircraft camouflage depending on the T.O., and it was also considered that German and Japanese aircraft had insignias on both wings, all these enhanced aircraft identification. It was not meant to make the enemy hit the wing instead of the pilot or the engine, like you put it in the video, as if the enemy was hypnotized by the single roundel and miss the target. It was just a concept studied in laboratory by the Engineering Division of the USAS in 1920 and not based on real combat experience in WW II. Secondly, you should have picked another example because no Bf-109K-4 ever fought against a P-40. And lastly, you might choose better words to describe, like it's not an EERIE TRUTH, because it's neither supernatural nor frightening.
