I love how they use to have those meetings between the combatants, trainers and referees, before every match. I wonder how many times the match finish was worked out in these meetings. Wrestlers often talk about how they sometimes never met the opponent until they got in the ring for the match. If they worked together all the time, they probably used the meeting to scope out women, or tell jokes.

This was the age of wrestling that started it all, and the guys i liked in the 80s as a child were all influenced by this age. Guys like the von erichs, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair. Those guys grew up watching guys from the 50s to the 60s

Every move has a purpose, even when Lou is trying to fight out of the headlock his counterstrikes makes sense, he doesn't just throw punches, he times them in a way to protect himself from further damage. Can we cancel AEW and pit this in its place?

George was also an accomplished wrestler, of that no doubt. Lou Thesz said George did an awful lot for the sport as a showman but was also a good wrestler indeed. High praise from a man who didn't give it out easily.

They used to save the silly over the top stuff for when it was believable that the wrestlers had lost their cool and were lashing out.

This match is NOT from the International Amphitheatre as mentioned. It is from Friday, October 31, 1952 at Eagle Hall in Racine, WI. Verne also went over Bobby Nelson and Count (Carl) von Meyer the same day. Two cards were held that day, free in the afternoon and then paid at night. There were 30 bouts in all. This was done in order to tape a bunch of matches for TV. The card was held in Racine because many of the wrestlers wrestled 2 or 3 times and the Illinois State Athletic Commission wouldn't allow it. If you notice, you can hear individual voices from the crowd and a smattering of applause compared to shows that were actually taped at the Amphitheatre.

The announcer had no love for "Richard" and "The Swede". Dick the Bruiser and Krusher Karlsson were classic heels, this was an early one. So cool to see a match from 1959. Thanks Chicago Film Archives.

Six absolute legends in the ring, seven counting Russ Davis. Bronco Lubich had flown in from Dallas to officiate this important match but he got hold of some bad shellfish that day at lunch and was unable to answer the bell so to speak. Russ and Ken Resnick were third cousins by the way.
Age 11, 1960, I hadn't yet seen pro wrestling. Sundays, our family visted my dad's dad, well into his 80s, frail, &, (I realize now), in mid -stages of dementia. Out of nowhere he tells me about a wrestler who weighs "601 lbs". "Why's he telling me this stuff?", I thought, "& why the '1'?" That was my intro to pro wrestling: Checking to see if my grandfather was making this stuff up:^)

Can one imagine Chest Benard today with the modern weight training methods and natural supements. Then if you threw in steriods or PEDS he would be MASSIVE.

Great match! It would have been better with any other announcer though. The guy sounds like a bored heckler. Chicago had some great matches in the 50s marred by the horrible announcer.

Back then, even Italians and other swarthy Europeans were considered second class citizens. Notice the announcer was trying to effect a 'wop' accent.
