How does these props do in deeper water ?
@RoostMarineLLC25 күн бұрын
They do well. They have good top end and carry a load well. Biggest thing to remember is to trim up quite a bit higher than with a conventional mud prop. In full water depth it’s best to keep half the prop in the water for full speed. Trimming up super high, like in this video, is to let you run super shallow water without wearing down the prop or getting stuck.

I thought only longtails could do this. What's the point in having a longtail, then?
@RoostMarineLLCАй бұрын
It does make ya wonder… With the Roost you get longtail capability for your surface drive, without losing the speed and drivability that surface drives are known for. There are advantages to longtails, but that list has gotten shorter since the introduction of the Roost.
@Kizzle1237Ай бұрын
All I know is it’s good if your hopping trees to have a long tail. It’s safer to clear the prop from the log but honestly I’ve never had a surface drive so I can imagine it can prob hop logs easily too

This just so fits with the issues me and my mate think about in our hunting rig a G3 15*48 VBW with a Copperhead 23 with a MAC exhaust and limited to 4300. Our hunting locallity is square kilometers of estuary lagoon that is 4 inches to 1.5 foot deep and is water over sticky/firm mud and sand. We used to go through 2 props a season but manage things a bit better now. What prop do you think would suit us. We do OK with the C12 but load carrying over the stiff mud shallows is our main area for improvement. We like the boat to be on a plane so over 13mph. We do overload it a bit with 400lbs of hunter, 140lbs of lab, 36 decoys and hunting and boat gear.

Does you re propeller fit on a GO-Devil surface drive 40 efi ?
@RoostMarineLLC2 ай бұрын
Neither the MB HEX or GT HEX are intended to fit on a GoDevil, but some have found the GT HEX to fit to their satisfaction. The biggest issue is they don't have the counterbore on the lower unit end, so they don't fit all the way onto the GoDevil prop shaft. We are working on a GoDevil specific version that should be available soon, so stay tuned!

I don't understand how the boat is moving so fast when less than half the prop is in the water? Is there another prop or something?
@RoostMarineLLC2 ай бұрын
Nope! Just one prop. That’s what makes the Roost mud prop so awesome. It keeps you going even where there’s very little prop in the water. We also have another video doing the same thing with a bigger boat too.
@andys55622 ай бұрын
@@RoostMarineLLC That's cool. Thank you for the reply. Your website talks about the prop not needing to go deep into the mud but uses the water on top. What if you get into mud though? Real mud mud. Is it gonna push me through?
@RoostMarineLLC2 ай бұрын
@@andys5562 Mud is not required for the Roost to perform well, but when you do find yourself in lots of mud, the Roost does amazing. It has a ton of grip in the mud and will provide that grip with less submersion than conventional mud props.

Why is your motor jumping so much?
@RoostMarineLLC5 ай бұрын
Because the bottom is very hard packed and bumpy. Plus there’s a lot of packed down phragmites. It’s jumping because the skeg is hitting all that and is unable to go through it, so it bounces over it.

Can I ask about the skeg you have on the frame of the unit. Are you noticing less or if any dragging now compared to just the oem face?
@RoostMarineLLC9 ай бұрын
Sure! If I understand your question correctly, the skeg on the Mud Buddy Mini is different from the one on the HDR. The HDR leaves the face of the drive box exposed. The Mini has the skeg wrapping under the bottom to the front of the drive box. The motor in this video is a Mini. When you say dragging, do you mean dragging on the bottom or catching weeds or something else?

What would work better for this a longtail or surface drive? I am very new to mud motors and I plan on buying a complete setup this month.
@RoostMarineLLC9 ай бұрын
That’s a very complex question. The short answer is in general most folks would recommend a longtail, since they are historically known for their four wheel drive type of performance. Surface drives have historically struggled in these kinds of conditions, but the Roost prop is changing that. Ultimately, it comes down to the entire setup (motor +boat +prop). I’ve run both longtails and surface drives, and none of my longtails could have dreamed of pulling off what the surface drive did in this video. If you want to be able to crawl over anything, a longtail is the way to go. If you want to go through nasty conditions and go fast, a surface drive with a Roost prop is the way to go. In the case of this video, I needed rapid acceleration and speed to shoot the section of dry grass. If you have further questions about this, please give us a call and we’d be happy to walk you though this.

I live in south Florida. I mainly boat where there is extremely thick vegetation like in this video. The water is also very shallow. It would be more ideal for an airboat, but unfortunately I cannot afford one right now. Right now these are what I’m deciding between Welded alumacraft 1446 Gx690 25hp mud buddy mini. Very light boat like the one in this video. Welded 1655 Jon boat. Has a 2023 backwater longtail 40hp. Boat seems pretty heavy but it is a flat bottomed boat with a lot of hp. The guy claims it hits 30mph. Would I be able to run that prop on the longtail rig or just the surface drive?
@RoostMarineLLC9 ай бұрын
@@Gibson_Nutt Big boats with lots of horsepower and speed sound great until you get them stuck. With a light weight rig, you can just get out drag it. Plus in general they will start in less water than the big boats. Those Backwaters are legit, but that's going to make for a heavier rig. If the 1446 is a flat-bottom, I would choose that with the Mud Buddy. You should be able to get right about 30 mph out of that Mud Buddy with a Roost on it. The rig in the video holds 30.5 all day at 4200 ft elevation. The Roost would only fit on the Mud Buddy. It's too big to fit on the Backwater.

A couple of years ago we modified a unit like this for a “special mission” . The upper bracket that you see with the three holes was replaced with a gas shock. Right after the gear box, a truck CV joint was installed and a hinge point for the output shaft. They intended for the skeg that’s below and protects the prop to hit multiple submerged objects at great speed and not have to move the entire power plant when it occurs.
