"Even Sir John French, calvalryman though he was, realized the situation..." That's serious Olympic-grade shade !

The late, great Richard Holmes! Still, he was a great teacher, and lucky were they who sat at his feet to learn, why war still matters!

Would it be worth my while uploading Richard Holmes’ War Walks series or will they be blocked by the BBC? I remember they were on KZbin a while back but they have gone.

I'm a huge fan of Richard Holmes, but I do disagree with him here. Having taught for so long at Sandhurst, he is the high command's historian.

10:20 anyone who's ever been in a military recognizes the scene where there's work to do and a few people work and most just stand around while trying to look busy. Some things don't change!

Richard Holmes- fantastic historian, fantastic programs and sadly missed. The likes of Dan Snow (yeah me dad got me the job) are poor in comparison RIP RH great at bringing history to life. as for the program RIP you brave souls- I salute you. Godbless

Could not agree more! His passion draws one in until it becomes a wholesome drug of military facts and memories. He treats the viewer as if it was a one-to-one tutorial. I remember this series well, in the summer of 1999, just before my ordination. Dan Snow, enough said, like claire balding,, he's in everything bar the kitchen sink! His hogging of the Great War centenary was particularly off-putting; a pity that RH was not there, what a master class in military historiography that would have been!!!

A first rate documentary from a great historian. The more I discover about the First World War I never fail to be amazed by the arrogance, stupidity lack of imagination shown by British Generals. The numbers of dead and wounded at these large battles such as the Somme is almost impossible to comprehend, especially in an age when each member of the British forces who is killed while on active service is memorialised in print and on TV news- EVERY ONE! Juxtapose that with the 20000 'lost" on the first day of the Somme. Losses on that scale would never be tolerated today- Those in the top ranks of the Army would be dismissed and politicians would resign and governments fall from power.

Watching this documentary again after 6 six years I never fail to be impressed by Richard Holmes. His commentary is always gripping and exciting, conveying the mood and atmosphere of the events he's discussing. His commentary is so rich in fascinating detail. There is so much information contained in this film that I have never heard before. I have read dozens of books on the war and watched countless documentaries and movies on the period and this great historian is in the top rank.

My great uncle died in late 1915, aged 19 he was then a lance corporal, I have his medals and their ribbons show how his parents wore them each and every remembrance day they were alive. Young men whose lives were wasted, young men who survived and knew they had been lied to. Our foreign secretary Gray has so much to answer for.

For me this war was summed up by the following words from the Pink Floyd track, Us and them : Forward he cried from the rear And the front rank died And the general sat And the lines on the map Moved from side to side
