@DbugII11 күн бұрын

@DbugII11 күн бұрын
Bonne chance :)

I actually have an Atari 520 st that has not been touched since the 80s-90s. Might sell it
@DbugIIАй бұрын
Assuming you don't care about the warranty sticker (or if it's already gone), I would suggest opening the machine to check if any of the PSU capacitors are bulging. Also, if you sell it, be extra super careful with how you protect it, the plastic used for the case of the Atari ST has a tendency to become super brittle, it's not uncommon to see them shatter like if they were made of glass. Other than that, a common issue would be floppy drives having troubles due to lack of lubrication, but other than that, it's highly probable the machine still run. If it was stored in a slightly humid location you may have to pop the components on sockets out and in again, sometimes there's a bit of surface corrosion (makes the contacts dull instead of shinny) resulting in bad contacts.

Now what we need is Galdéon 2.0 with the following fixes: - Avoid the background redraw behind the wall columns to improve the frame rate and limits flickering - Items in the maze to either collect or avoid, with full collision handling! - Doors that can be opened and close! With that, this would be a generic enough engine to make more advanced games, like a 3D version of Rax's Wizard's Lair :)
@JiBePe2 ай бұрын
@@DbugII Amongst these suggested changes some were already adressed in game M.VOCID and some were on top of the todo list and not so difficult to do. But the most difficult to answer was : Who is behind the We in the "Now what WE need is Galdéon 2.0" ? Because as I was working on the raycasting engine (and frequently reporting on its progression) I could never met anyone interested in using it for a game. So I reached the conclusion that nobody really needs a raycasting engine on Oric. I must admit that it surprised me a lot because I had thought that it was quite unusual to see this type of things on an Oric computer and then it could have open some new ideas and potentialities. The only moment I could feel an enthousiasm was when I realeased a mini Wolfenstein 3D proof of concept.
@DbugII2 ай бұрын
@@JiBePe The main thing is that for an engine to be usable by someone, it needs to do a certain minimal amount of things out of the box, most of the features involving rendering, collisions and interactions, are hard to do by someone who does not know the engine and is not fluent in 3D and 6502 assembler. I double checked M.VOCID (on forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?p=26112&hilit=vocid#p26112) and I did not manage to pick-up the key (I was passing through it without picking it up), and there's a lot of refresh flicker. Regarding Wolfric, it was almost there, but you stopped answering the comments on the forum: forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?p=26854#p26854 With the smaller view it was at playable framerate, nice light effect on the ceiling and floor, even one moving object but we can't interact with it (can't shoot it). All that was needed was to have a weapon somewhere to find, possibility to shoot at some ennemies, and have an exit door to reach. Expectation is a bit like cooking a soufflé: People take a look and wait with high expectations, but ultimately what matters is when they can taste it :) If I was not interested, I would not have made the title picture and the dashboard for the game.

The Compact Floppy was co-developed by Matsushita (now Panasonic Corporation) and Hitachi Maxell. Both Hitachi and Matsushita made drives for this format. Personally I didn't know Oric/Tangerine offered this as an option. An Oric with a Disk II would be interesting to see. I had no idea it was used on anything but Apple IIs and their clones. It was a very simple system, which used no dedicated disk controller, controlling the drives through an interface with a handful of TTL chips entirely in software, and it was extremely fast- actually the fastest floppy disk interface available for any personal computer at the time. There wasn't even a homing sensor in the drive- it simply slammed the head shuttle into the stop upon initialising the drive at boot time.

First thing that comes to mind would be a problem with the cooling system, either some dust, hair, etc... clogging the air vents and reducing the air flow, another possibility could be that the thermal compound between the CPU and the cooling system that could have dried out and not insuring a proper heat transfer. That alone could be causing bluescreens, but would not hurt to also run a full memory check (after you've checked the cooling because that's supposed to run for hours), and also perform a disk scan for any corruption of the filesystem. Good luck!
