No 'Sands of iwo Jima'? 'Donovan's Reef' was a fun Wayne movie. 'The Quiet Man' is perhaps his best non western!

If he had actually served in any branch of the services he would probably been even more believable.

To me the five best would be John Wayne, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Jean Simmons. God bless them.

Of all the Jon Wayne films I have I have always considered "The Quiet Man" Wayne's best film. But then again I dont think that any film with John Wayne, Maureen O'Sullivan and Victor Mc Laughlin(apologies if misspelt) in it can be bad.

Great movies. I would have included Sands of Iwo Jima. I also love Hatari.

The role was initially offered to Marlon Brando, who turned it down.

Don't even mention 'Red River' in the same sentence with "Rio Bravo!' One is a classic western and the other is a vehicle for Dean Martin and pop singer Ricky Nelson! And casting the 53-year-old Wayne's love interest as 28-year-old Angie Dickinson is ridiculously mismatched and comical!

Genghis Khan was actually Caucasian. He had red hair and grey eyes. So, casting Wayne was historically accurate, though his American twang was probably not so accurate. Buddha was also Caucasian.

Almost everyone in that movie ended up dying or cancer. Now we know. Making movies on Old nuclear test sites causes cancer.

One other actress contracted cancer after working on that movie: Agnes Moorehead, whose most famous role would come in the next decade, "Endora," on TV's "Bewitched."

One thing forgotten here is, not only were the cast and crew exposed to the radiation but, the few seconds of footage showing troops walking headlong towards a nuclear detonation on the battlefield. Those military personnel were human Guinea pigs many of whom were, like the crew and cast, to get cancer as a result. And where is that contaminated soil the studio brought back? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I knew the Duke since I worked for his best friend and they were such good friends that Duke was buried on Chicks family plot along side Chicks son who died in a car accident about 6 years earlier😢 Duke was a man’s man and I mean that in a good way. He loved America and tried to help as much as possible even though he could go to eat because of an injury in college. Also he wasn’t guy like all the woke generation try to say😱 He was just a down to earth guy who lived to make westerns and he lived to fish and hunt and spend time with his family on and off the screen🥰

So many behind the scene stories that shows produces really don’t m on now what will be a good or bad movie! William Goldman, who wrote “ Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid” and many other movies loved to say about Hollywood “Nobody knows Anything “ about what will be a good movie & what won’t be!!

The Longest Day set a standard! US actors played "Americans", Canadian actors played Canadians, Scots played Scots, English played English, French played French, Germans played Germans. And everyone spoke their own language with reasonably accurate translations;. (since some words while not cuss words in their native language are curse or cuss words when translated....)

Actually compared to today's trash it would be an epic masterpiece. Has decent actuon, and acting is good, if over the top in some cases. And a historical masterpiece compared to Napoleon or Gandhi or Braveheart or The Patriot ( though two of these are at least great movies if wildly inaccurate). But yes, an absolute production tragedy

For years, the government told us it was safe, and the government wouldn't lie to us. People no longer say, "The government wouldn't lie to us," because it sounds too goofy today. Nowadays, they have other ways of saying the same thing, such as, "That has been debunked," or, "That's just a conspiracy theory."

Ck you resources on wiki or google etc. He was a WWII draft dodger. Single greatest regrets. Recounted in the movie "Trumbo", a real life retelling of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo wo was one of the ten imprisoned for UnAmerican activities for refusing to give the US Senate hearings of UnAmerican activities chaired by Senator Joe McCarthy the names of their closest friends labeling them as Communists for to have them arrested. He and 9 others refused and were imprisoned for it. They were blackballed by Hollywood and Wayne as the screen actors guild president and Hedda Hopper a powerful American gossip columnist whose opinions ruined many screen wannabes and not to few established actors/actresses/writers and directors all fell to her pen's displeasure.
