The pickpockets must wonder who the crew are that are following these two around filming. While they are trying to catch pickpocket, I guess they figure these people are Americanos making their You Tube video.

Why didn't the perps react to the camera crew? We battled every day with this conundrum, trying to make them understand stay further back, be less conspicuous. Often to no avail, and ruining many opportunities to film good action. The whole purpose of the documentary is to make travelers understand the techniques of skillful pickpockets. Some of the thieves with long arrest records, thought the local judges would be more lenient in sentencing if they cooperated with us. Every major city in Europe has similar problems with pickpocketing.

I was on a cruise ship in the Med and Bob Arno was on teaching marks to not be marks. He told me that I was too paranoid to be a mark. I thanked him for the compliment. Bob's corporate pickpocketing. LOL!

My feeling is your always going to have oblivious people to pickpocket. And at least their not using a gun. They have all done jail time. So i find it hard to condem them. But the next time i go to italy i should have a fake wallet and hide the real one.

Watching this in 2024 after remembering it from years ago. Hubris is powerful. Thieves actually showed up for a mini thieves roundtable meeting, ON CAMERA, and demonstrate how they are stealing.🤦🏽‍♀️😂

Never put yr money n passport n other valuable docs in yr conventional wallet or purse. Stack them into yr waist bags tightly wrapped around your body. Let them stay under yr shirt or clothes during yr journey. Isn't it easy ?

This question often comes up - are criminals enjoying basking in recognition and media fame? It's really a core male drive - why strong animals attract the opposite sex. Yes, several of these dudes enjoyed the temporary fame. But some felt they were bamboozled into participation. They felt shamed and recognized forever as serious pickpockets, even if they were at the top of their dubious trade. They weren't happy when this documentary got recognition worldwide. It affected their daily income and made tourists more cautious. Not what they had expected.

Don’t forget that these pick pocketers romanticise taking advantage of people in a vulnerable position as “art”. They state that they apparently steal from people who “have money” while taking on public transport. I’m sure that pick pocketing has no difference from any other kind of stealing. No mercy or kindness should be offered to such individuals.

The cameras or rather the tech crew filming this documentary were the biggest challenge. Their large cameras drew attention and we lost several good opportunities because the DP or his assistants were too close. Eventually we told them to stay further away from us, which goes against all instincts of a DP. We were used to filming these confrontations and used early versions of GoPro cameras, hidden in common objects like guide books, and a handbag with glass ornaments that functioned as an opening for the lens. This is how we got the best segments. Also, the distribution company had a rule, which is the same today for any documentary: only so many minutes of a 60-minute film can be taken with action cameras like GoPros. All those rules may soon be out the window with the new DJI OSMO Pocket Camera 3 - excellent 4K stable footage.

FIRST, this is not a FAKE! We are always amazed when comments like this appear - and they do, fairly frequently. We take it as a compliment. It means the viewers simply CAN’T IMAGINE why thieves would agree to be part of a documentary and even have their faces recognized. There is a certain amount of chicanery involved from our side. And we won’t reveal the full story here. A small hint we will reveal, they ALL had serious criminal history. In fact one or two wore their ankle bracelets outside of permitted boundaries. Maybe we indirectly inspired him to cooperate rather than face unpleasant sentencing. We can’t say more. Thanks for being impressed, despite coming to the wrong conclusions.
