Do you think South African wine is enough of a niche? That's my focus :)

Hmm... what's the way to build volume in wine??

Thanks, all. Wine is niche, so it's unlikely to see massive numbers anyway. WAAAY smaller numbers than food, or toys (which explains why you can build a following by filming the unwrapping of rarer toys and collectibles).

Glad I found this- was getting disheartened that my KZbin wine channel isn't at 1million views yet :p when it comes to content... there are so many youtubers who have millions of subscribers and all they talk about is themselves- that makes me perplexed!

The better independent retailers are talking to those 'Costco people' every day. Everyday of the last decade I've tried to pull up those people in a P2P way. Online i try to speak to the geeks. The brands that can inspire the indie retailers can make a real difference in the USA wine landscape.

Austin - I've got a different view. Because ratings have subjective and contextual elements to them, they can only really tell you where one person sees that wine on a continuum of worst to best in the world. That doesn't help you as a consumer in terms of whether or not you'd actually like it, which is far more important. So the rating only makes sense for you if already know that critic tends to favorably rate wines that you enjoy.

So is a rating more objective or should they be graded on a curve? Should the rating reflect the quality vs its peers? If the rating is worth anything, it is worth

Far right, in the small percentage trying to do something serious with this stuff. Whether I'm successful at that is another matter!

Nick - well, in hindsight some of those ratings would get adjusted up/down based more on my experience level now, so in a certain context (ah ha! :) they are "wrong"...

"I'm happy to be wrong." I'd put it this way--nah, you weren't wrong. The thing is, you were JUST as right then as you are now. It's a context thing. -Nick

Joe, It is too bad that someone would think that they are "all that and a bag of chips" to demand wine. In the year that I have been video blogging I have never asked for wine. I have a spot on my site that lets people how to send wine if they want, but I don't ask. You are right.. I am just myself and if they find value in me reviewing their wines they will just send them. I look forward to chatting with you in Portland!

At 5:20 you talk about the need to own a very small niche in order to build a motivated audience. While that's probably a fair point, there's also value to breadth because real people have a big breadth. All great writers and leaders have breadth. It may be that this over-specialization is a limiting factor on the audience potential. Think about "Juliet Naked" by Nick Hornby and your advice to get even more niche-y. Being passionate about small shiz maybe "internet cool" but it's lame IRL.

Nice. I use a chiller similar to yours, but mine has a velcro closure so you adjust it. I never use it to actually chill wine though, I didn't know it would do it. I use it to prolong the coldness of already chilled wine, especially bubbly. Never saw the Torkscrew before, but I noticed they get iffy reviews for durability on Amazon. Looks like yours has held up.
