Strong meditation, Rabbi. Spent a lot of time reading the Christian gospels in my younger years and the specific teachings of Jesus, those that transmitted the value and even the urgency of existing in a condition where you accept the call to center others, or prioritize the community, ahead of your own ambitions, desires or even your own needs, always resonated with me most. And you quite effectively highlighted this theme here. I love the synergies of faith. Obviously the counter-pathology to this posture has been most readily cultivated and arguably even weaponized in our modern sociopolitical economy, and so the task to effectively and yes, also compassionately break that spell is dead ahead of us.

Appreciate this, meditation. So important to "self-assess" and yet we are always in search of ways to avoid sincere reflection, often times resorting to activities that only reinforce our resentment and other unexamined maladies. Life's a challenge.
@EclecticCleric7 ай бұрын
On that note, I've been trying to spend as much time as possible away from screens, or even out in nature quietly. It seems to me that life is short and the most wise use of it is to get to know ourselves as best we can.

Scholastically speaking, we can only speak of God through apophatic means. He is beyond being itself.
@EclecticCleric7 ай бұрын
Love it. That's Maimonides' jam. I always heard it called the Via Negativa, which must be another formulation of apophatic theology.
@Thedisciplemike7 ай бұрын
@EclecticCleric yes. This is quite cross traditional, in accord with Divine Simplicity. Maimonides, St Thomas Aquinas, Ibn Arabi, Dionysius, and even the Neo Platonists. St Anselm famously said, "God is that which no greater can be concieved."

Would love to hear more about your conception of "universal" love - which seems to characterize our existential setting as one of care and benevolence - as opposed to, how I've seen many describe it instead, as incidental and wholly unconcerned. I'm sympathetic! I just... have a tendency toward a more negative conception
@EclecticCleric9 ай бұрын
Wow, that's a hard one! Recently, I've been feeling like we're all cells in a Universal organism, which is aware of us and attends to us. All of our squabbles are petty and trivial, like treatable infection or cancer in the Universal body. Does that make sense?

I actaully resonated with this firmly, even the Sela, if that is how it is spelled. I hope I can get this on my youtube on phone to have when I lay my head down tonight. The word you speak upon releasing your breath brings Great Peace. That, in and of itself was quite illuminating. You have such a Sweet Spirit. Thank You for doing this! Many Blessings I send to you for what you are doing here, for what you are encourging, as well as your relaxing words spoken with such gentleness. I am most impressed at your reaching out fearlessly with Love and Self Respect. I am definitely going to practice this ritual before bed. 🙏💖🙏

Leviticus 20:13 calls for death by stoning of any two "Sons of Israel" apprehended in the act of one sexually penetrating the other as he would a woman - by at least two male witnesses, accused by them before the council of elders and pronounced guilty. It is unlikely the Levitical lawgivers looked upon the act as an expression of mutual sexual attraction, but rather as one of contempt, acceptable when dealing with foreigners (Judges 19:22) and captives of war (2Sam 10:4), not so with fellow tribesmen.
