My great great grandfather William Zene Heskett owned the livery in Gerard, in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. He won it in a poker game.

Aboard the Oriskany, in the Ships Company, not an airdale. Worked in Operations and CIC between 1972-74. Did not see any interviews with air ops, or ships CIC crew, lots of interesting stories there since we worked so much with the officers and intelligence. Any one in Ops during those years. Two years later the Oriskany was history. Just saying.

I sold grit for two years. Had fifty people on my rout. Made 12 or 15 bucks a week. Sold my rout list to a friend for $100 bucks when I went to work full time. GRIT stands for Good Reading In There.

I have to argue with your pronunciation of Quindaro. Having been raise in KCK we never called it Quindara, it was always Quindaro with a hard O . I can give you more history if you want. My family had a grocery in KCK prior to WWII.

Actually, the school colors were officially green & white. When coach Jim Lewis (1969-1979) showed up from LaCrosse in 1969, he was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers. So, when they got new uniforms in 1973-75(??) he ordered Packers' athletic gold helmets and pants that were identical to the Packers' uniforms. The athletic gold color stuck. It may actually be listed as an official color now. My dad was on his staff from 1971-76 and told me this story, as well as Jim Lewis' successor, Rich Anderson, (1980-2001) who was my coach. I have an old Pratt High helmet from the early 70's, and it is green-tinted metallic silver with the dark green Greenback mascot on each side. Dark green and white stripe down the center.

By the way, your painting was created by Samuel J. Reader of the The second Kansas State militia cavalry. The Regiment became isolated from the rest of the union forces, and was attacked by a brigade of confederate cavalry under Sydney Jackman. Jackman murdered a number of Kansas prisoners and captured the piece of artillery. This is known as the battle of the Mockbee farm.

The battle of Westport was not a three day battle. This is nonsense that was made up by the author, that everybody reads, Howard Monett. His book, action before Westport, is full of errors. He includes the findings of October 21 through October 23 and claims that constitutes the battle of Westport The battle on October 21, 1864 is actually the battle of the little blue. The battle of October 22 is the battle of big blue. The battle of October 23 is the battle of Westport. This battle consisted of fighting on two fronts. The divisions of James F Fagan and Joseph Shelby fought Kansas forces on the prairie south of Westport, Missouri. A couple of miles to the east the cavalry division from the department of Missouri under general Alfred Pleasanton attacked and carried Ford on the big blue river in the face of opposition by confederate cavalry under John Marmaduke. At the climax of the battle, the Kansas forces and the Missouri forces joined together, and drove the Confederates southward off the battlefield.

I'm sorry to hear about this. When I was in primary school we were taught that Europeans settlers, and later US military, were soley bad and the indian was innocent. We were quizzed about treaty violations and massacres the white man did towards Native Americans. Turns out the truth is not so one sided. The indians were just as bad (if not worse).
