It looks good! But I think you almost waited too long to clamp it. By the time you put the clamps on, the glue was already setting up. But it looks like it all worked out for ya. I just bought one of these kits. It will be some time before I get to start on it. The weather here turned off super cold, and I can't work in the shop until spring time. I see it's been a few years since you did this guitar. How is it holding up?
@jimhollis416 күн бұрын
Yeah this whole project was a race start to finish. I ended up doing the whole thing in less than 3 weeks. Once I had to pull the neck and do some tweaking I did start to wonder if I was going to have to clean off and reapply glue but decided not to and it worked out. The guitar and electronics have held up really well. My son in law still gigs with it in our band. I think the only things I've done since finishing the build are add a support block on the inside of the body for the upper strap button and replace the stock bridge with an upgraded roller style bridge.

@@jimhollis41good to hear that it is being played! Custom made guitars be from a kit or scratch built have a tendency never to done. Kind of like a Kustom car. We are always tweaking them. I can hardly wait to get started on mine. I just finished ordering all the upgrades. Got some parts in still waiting on a few more. On mine it looks like I’ll need to rework the neck pocket some. Maybe you could do another video showing how it’s holding up.

If the customer had lighter touch what action would you aim for. Would this be the same for shorter scale acoustic bass? Thank you
@jimhollis41Ай бұрын
@@akfisher7138 for most players I recommend 5/64 on the bass side and 4/64 on the treble side and neck relief around 10 thousandths. This guitar would require a neck reset to achieve that and would probably exceed the value of the instrument.

Just an impression that this could very well be an Ovation Guitar “top bracing or top thickness” material issue. Assuming the bolts are able the hold the bridge tight to the top again, even with glue, the measured top bulge will likely remain an issue. Most acoustic guitars will experience bridge lifting and top bulge at some point, but only after many years of service if the guitar is properly cared for. Someone else here mentioned using the “Bridge Doctor” kit. Good suggestion, and I have used this kit to transform numerous 1970’s Yamaha’s or similar vintage Guitars back to playable condition again. That said, it is a surprising fix to apply to a beautiful guitar that is just 3 years old. Ovation may want to weigh in on this premature lift and bulge.

I could never get the bridge low enough on my 1948 Triumph, but taking the neck off, I discovered the angle had sagged. When the dove tail joint was cleaned and re-fitted, the small adjustment of the angle made all the difference. The original rosewood bridge did not need to be altered. Thanks for these great videos. I look forward to the binding episodes.

Notice the edge pieces in the wider bout to make the back wide enough. This is another indication that the guitar was sunburst originally, and has been stripped. A blond Epi guitar would only use two piece bookmatch. Notice the dark stains around the inside of the F holes.
@2011Matz7 ай бұрын
Notice the stain around the F hole from the top finish. I would say the guitar was sunburst finish and has been stripped. One authority says the blond natural finish was not introduced until 1941. I'm doing a 1948 Triumph now.

I wonder why guitar factories set string action considerably higher than "normal" for both classical and flamenco guitars.
@jimhollis418 ай бұрын
As many have commented ad nauseam on this video, classical guitar action is considerably higher than steel string acoustic guitars. I lowered this one a lot more than you’d typically see because my brother in law has reduced grip strength in his hands and a low action classical will still let him play some.
@garygullikson63498 ай бұрын
@@jimhollis41 My point was that most guitar makers seem to set action too high, perhaps to dodge complaints of string buzz. My Cordoba F7 was set about 4mm.

I would have replaced those bridge screw/bolts to help reinforce the bridge....that is a part of the Ovation design. I feel they put them there for a reason. I do like your abalone replacements for the original plugs though.... and the rest of your work was well done.
@jimhollis41 Жыл бұрын
Ovation uses epoxy and then glues the bridge to the finish which is a design flaw in my opinion. I removed all the finish from the guitar top and the bridge and got really good wood to wood contact for the wood glue and...again in my opinion...no need for screws. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I did the same thing on my GS Mini with the same results. Almost full height on a new bridge, good break angle and action. But I’m concerned about the neck angle being too steep. With a straightedge on the neck, it is about 2.5mm above the bridge. Doesn’t an overset neck cause other issues?

Yes. Oversetting is an issue for sure. With your straightedge under 3mm above the bridge, you should be good.

When you go reaching through the sound hole of such a nice guitar with clunky steel tools, make a cardboard protective mask and tape it down around the edges of the hole. No matter how careful you try to be, you might still damage the top by not taking precautions. Second point: Every Taylor eventually needs this neck reset. It's wrong for them to inconvenience or charge owners for a necessary repair integral to the design of and reasons for this clever bolted neck joint. As another commenter said, you could just thin down the shims that are in the guitar already (on a slight taper) by trial-and-error to zero in on the right neck tilt. You will almost never need a thicker shim for this repair.
@jimhollis41 Жыл бұрын
This is actually my guitar so wasn’t worried about it. I would definitely take precautions with a guitar that isn’t mine. Just to clarify…Taylor backed off on charging me. I think once they knew there wasn’t an authorized service provider in my area they decided to just mail me the shims. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@jimhollis41 Thanks Jim! So happens I'm working on a friend's Taylor right now and got some helpful info from your video. Exact same issue really. He wanted a basic cleanup/setup/restring but when I got into it I found after adjusting the truss rod that there's just not enough clearance at the saddle to really get the action right without a neck reset too. Taylor's bolt-on system sure makes it easier. I bet you most people think they're glued together like Martins, Gibsons, etc. So tomorrow I'm going to have 'the talk' with my friend and see if he wants to pay me to go the extra mile and make it right, or settle for okay and call it a day. Anyway, enjoyed your video so thanks again.
