Wow, I've played most of the Sierra adventure games, but never seen that comic/manual before. Interesting to see they gave you a guide to the sort of words you could use. That was usually part of the adventure, figuring out which word and phrases would get you what you want. I stopped playing once adventure games turned to point and click. It lost something at that stage. You could drag your mouse across the screen to see when the icon changed or just randomly click everywhere until something happened. And it wasn't 'you' talking anymore, you would just click and the game told you what you're saying.

This was probably the most difficult game I ever played. I think it's the only Sierra game I never finished. Even King's Quest 3 I managed to finish after playing it for months, but not this one. Fond memories though, playing Sierra adventure games as a kid. My summer holidays consisted of spending the days on the beach and the evenings playing Sierra adventure games 🙂

Back in the day they really tried to cater for the computers that were out there. As computers were quite pricey, people tended to keep them around for longer, and wanted to get the maximum use out of their investments. The construction of the early home computers were quite robust, and made to last for a very long time.
@k7a3 күн бұрын
@@msdosgamereviews Very true, especially when "a very long time" was just a matter of a few years in that period of technology. Nowadays you can still play most games even on a 10 or 12 year old PC, but in the late 80s to early 90s just a few years was all it took to be completely left behind in some applications. Definitely don't miss that aspect of the era.

This is one of the few games I had an original of for the C64. I was incredibly impressed the first time, I flew into the asteroids, stopped, and just watched them floating by. The C64 version had an option to load a data disk on the mission screen, but sadly they never made any. I wish someone knew the file format for missions so that people could make new ones. I also had a pirated copy for the Amiga, which I also enjoyed. They removed the data disk option because I guess by then, they had decided that they were never going to make any more missions for it. BTW, I drew that copy of the map, back in 2011. Well, I didn't draw it so much as trace a barely legible scan I made of the original, which had black print on dark blue paper. Someone else added the red arrows showing the connections between wormholes though. I just copied exactly what was on the original. I also made a lighter, blue textured version that more closely resembles the original, but I made the B/W one so people could print a copy without wasting all their color ink. I also scanned the manual, but mine only had references to the C64 version, since it came out before the rest.
@msdosgamereviews9 күн бұрын
That red lines was me. I tracked down a copy of the star map, cleaned it up as best I could, and then noticed that you don't know where they jump points take you, so I played a bit, found out and added the info to my copy of the map. This game reminds me so much of the Wing Commander games!

I had a copy of this for the C64. It was technically impressive, especially the title music, but I never really found the game all that much fun to play. I'd average about 5-10 seconds between crashes (of my skateboard).

@@msdosgamereviews What I mean by cheating is this; You only control whatever player is currently visible on the screen, and selected. The computer is responsible for moving your other players, and any members of your team who are currently off the screen. When the computer gets the ball and throws it down the field toward your goal, one of his players is almost always in a perfect position to catch it. When you do the same, and the ball lands, all your players are usually off on the edges of the screen, which is where the computer left them. Worse, one of his players is there to catch it about half the time. This is unfair because the computer can move his players into position, even if they're not visible, but you have to wait for your guys to both become visible, and be selected, THEN try to move them into position. Also, maybe not cheating, but at the start of a match when the ball is served, the computer always just runs right through my guy like he isn't even there. Even if I've upgraded my players, he still plows me over. And those score multiplying loops on the sides of the field are useless because any time you throw the ball around one of them, guaranteed the computer will be there to throw it right back. EVERY TIME!

I played this on the Amiga, but never got all that far. I knew the basic objective of placing the drills, but in some of the sectors, I had no idea what to do, what shooting the various stuff did, etc. I had a map that someone copied from a book for me, and I even made a printable version in Deluxe Paint. The map is actually a rough sphere. Well, an eight-sided sphere. Basically it looks like a folded Rubik's Magic Snake. I was just as lost in Darkside. I did enjoy and complete both Castle Master games though, as well as Total Eclipse. I hate that the TE sequel, Sphinx Jinx, only ever came out on the 8-bit systems. Playing it at the default speed is agonizing, but speed up the emulator and enemies wreck you in seconds.

As crazy as this is going to sound, even though the c64 version has less than 1 fps, Matt Gray's SID music track added a lot to the atmosphere of the game. It intrigues me that we could have seen a simple, low-poly, low-framerate Quake in the 80s; which still would have blown the minds of people at the time. I think what was missing was the accumulated knowledge of how to design and control FPSes.
@msdosgamereviews11 күн бұрын
This was the grand daddy of the FPS. As it was, the animations are not smooth, due to the low frame rate, which was in turn due to the low processing power of the lower end of PC that this game was aimed at. I played some flight simulators of the same era that had slightly higher frame rates, but with low colors and only PC speaker available the idea of a first person shooter was still a little in the future at this point in time.

Interesting. I can't imagine this being accessible to many users when it released, since 640x350 apparently required an enhanced EGA monitor, which is given as of the reasons that most EGA games up and including the very late titles retained the 320x200 resolution.
