These drawings were reproduced in a book and someone scanned them to show the walk cycle. This is not an authentic Pencil Test from Fleischer Studios since they did not use them until they got into feature production in 1938 and were encouraged to do it by west coast Animators.
@RayPointerChannelАй бұрын
I am curious about the source of this since Fleischer Studios did not start using Pencil Tests until 1938 when they started production on GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. Their animation was tested on a large drum-like device that Max invented. It is my understanding that this was done by someone in recent years attempting to recreate the quality of the animation, and did so successfully. Popeye is more skillfully drawn here than he was in THE DANCE CONTEST. So this raises questions about this being a Pencil Test for that cartoon.

I should note , lest there be any confusion, the music that appears in the clip above is NOT the original music used in the scene from "The Mad Magician". For this short clip I chose to use an arrangement of "The Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish" composed by Harry Warren, Al Dubin, and Johnny Mercer , arranged by Carl Stalling , from the Warner Bros. cartoon "Case of the Missing Hare" where Bugs Bunny encounters an overbearing magician named Ala Bahma (guess who gets the worst of this encounter?) I love Stalling's arrangement of this tune and Stalling clearly had great affection for "The Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish" because he frequently used it in his scores for Warner Bros. cartoons.

CAVEAT: At around the 8:19 - 8:22 mark I misspoke when I said _"by putting the LAYER in Behind blend mode"_ ... I meant to say _"by putting the FOLDER in Behind blend mode"_ , because at that point in the video I'm referring to using the Folders in TVPaint 12.
@2DAnimax5 ай бұрын
these things possible in TVPaint 10?
@david_t_nethery_animator5 ай бұрын
I believe so (except for the folders as shown in the second half of the tutorial ; foldera are only available in TVPaint 12). I don't think layer blend mode options have changed since version 10 , so you should have the option in version 10 (TVPaint Pro) to set layer blend modes to Behind (for the upper layer/layers) and to Erase blend mode for the Fade layer between the upper layer(s) and lower layer(s) . I don't have TVPaint 10 to test it with it, but I think you can do this in TVPaint 10. (at least in the last iteration of TVPaint 10, which was 10.5.7 ) Also, I can't remember , but did TVPaint 10 Pro have the Project view with individual Clips (for the purposes of storyboards/animatics) ? I don't remember if that was a feature that was introduced in the latter part of 10.5's life or it was introduced in TVPaint 11 ? I think it was present in TVPaint 10.5.7 , which was the last version of TVPaint 10 I can remember using. Anyway, this tutorial is not intended for TVPaint 10 , but is intended as a tutorial for TVPaint 11 and TVPaint 12 , so maybe I should not have mentioned in passing during the video that I think it would also work in TVPaint 10 (or TVPaint 9) because those versions are pretty much irrelevant at this point.

It should be noted that TVPaint is not a video editing application per se , so the usual method of adding transitional effects between scenes such as FADES , WIPES, CROSS-DISSOLVES, etc is to complete each CLIP (SCENE) in TVPaint , render each clip to a .mov or .mp4 file, then assemble all your clips in an editing app such as Premiere or Final Cut , then add the transitions like cross-dissolves. This is still the best production pipeline , imo , but sometimes you may have a reason to want to see a cross-dissolve effect applied within your animatic in TVPaint , so this is a good way to do it. (and do it non-destructively). This method of creating a cross-dissolve between two Clips/Scenes in TVPaint involves placing the uppermost layers (the first scene) in BEHIND blend mode , also adding a new layer with a FADE-IN effect , setting the Fade layer to ERASE blend mode. It's a bit counter-intuitive , so that is why I made the video to show how to do it. Once you grasp it it's easy. And the big advantage of the cross-dissolve being non-destructive (i.e. the dissolve effect is not "baked-in" to the layers) is that you can easily go back later to change the length of the scene(s) and/or change the length of the cross-dissolve. Thanks again to Peter Wassink for posting this clever workaround to creating cross-dissolves in TVPaint.

I neglected to mention it in the video, but this clever method for making a non-destructive cross-dissolve using layer blend modes was first discovered and posted by Peter Wassink on the TVPaint Forum.

Hi David, I'm curious on how general ADF scanners handle wrinkled paper due to constant flipping? I'm thinking of getting the Epson WF-7710 (or something of similar price) and hoping that the scanner jamming won't be a constant issue when scanning in rough animation.
@david_t_nethery_animator7 ай бұрын
I've used an Epson WF adf scanner. They work fine , but all of these type of scanners will jam now and then , in my experience. Try to make sure the paper isn't too wrinkled and be sure it is placed into the ADF tray as neatly as possible (edges squared up). Don't overload the ADF tray , scan a large scene in smaller sections of 20 - 25 drawings at a time, then reload the ADF tray with the next section. I wouldn't put a stack of drawings in the ADF and just walk away . Keep a close watch on it and if it jams try to turn it off immediately. If it really crunches up a drawing badly I have used an iron (on very low heat setting) to iron the drawing flat again (iron it on the back side). I never had to do that much. I guess for rough animation I would tend to use a downshooter (copystand) with a HD webcam to capture the drawings one frame at a time . Then use the scanner for the clean-ups (although clean up drawings can also tend to get bent and wrinkled on one side from excess flipping/rolling.

@@gunier.j.kintgenanimations You are correct that many times cels were washed and reused. Or simply thrown away. The same with drawings. Often the studios who owned the original artwork considered them expendable after the final inked & painted images were captured on film. (the recognition of animation as a collectible art form was still in the distant future at that point) . The surviving cels and drawings from the "Golden Age" of animation are because some individual artist who worked at the studio saved them. The original Popeye drawings shown in the pencil test belong to an animation collector in New York . The scans of those drawings were loaned to me to make the pencil test posted above.

@@david_t_nethery_animator The scanning of these pencil drawings proves that this is a recently produced "Pencil Test." Again, Pencil Tests were not in use at Fleischer Studios in 1933. Can you do a more in depth tutorial on the differences, does the camera feed in the drawings directly from the downshooter to TVpaint?
@david_t_nethery_animator Жыл бұрын
So, as a rule , the image quality you will get by video capture from a downshooter is not as good as image quality from a scanner. Video capture from a downshooter is used only for line testing , but usually the quality is not high enough for final images that will be colored and composited with backgrounds. And Scanning is much FASTER than shooting drawings one at a time on a downshooter (as the video above demonstrates). However, for line testing (pencil testing) capturing drawings directly from a downshooter (using an HD webcam or a DSLR) is possible in TVPaint using the Video Input function in TVPaint. *NOTE: currently TVPaint's Video Input only works on Windows , the MacOS version of TVPaint does not have Video Input because of changes that Apple made to MacOS and how it interacts with cameras. TVPaint Development is aware of the problem and they say it is on their "to-do" list to fix the problem, but as of right now , Sept. 16, 2023, the Video Input is disabled in the MacOS version of TVPaint, but it still works on the Windows version. The usual method of video capture is to use an HD webcam as the input device. On Windows there are also some third-party apps that will allow you to capture images directly from the live feed of some models of Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. Elgato Cam Link 4k. and SparkoCam are two of those third party apps that I've been told will convert the live feed from certain Canon and Nikon DSLR's into a video signal that works with TVPaint Video Input on Windows. I'm also told that Canon's EOS Webcam utility will work. (I have not personally tested these apps with TVPaint because I am on Mac, not Windows).
@counterstrike89 Жыл бұрын
@@david_t_nethery_animator That's really interesting, thanks for that, yeah I guess I'll hold off from getting a Mac at the moment, I was going to make the switch. I know most studios now just draw directly digitally on the cintiq or with the Apple pencil, but I wonder if someone skilled at drawing could with the pencil and paper still work as fast as someone digitally, a few top animators in Japan I remember just a few years back were still using pencil and paper, not sure though what they used to test the animation, or what kind of scanners I know they wouldn't want to waist any time, but what you're showing here is really cool.

@david_t_nethery_animator Жыл бұрын
In the past I've used Digicel Flipbook , but it's a much simpler program than TVPaint , not as many features as TVPaint, so not really a fair comparison. For what it was, Digicel Flipbook was "ok'", but not great, imo. It worked pretty good as a video capture system for traditional pencil on paper animation captured with a digital video camera or webcam. Unfortunately, the tech support for Digicel Flipbook on MacOS (which I use) has been lacking for several years . Digicel Flipbook has never been updated to run on a modern MacOS since the release of Catalina (4 years ago!). Digicel Flipbook does not work on MacOS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey or Ventura. So Digicel Flipbook is irrelevant for a Mac user using a current MacOS. It seems like after 4 years if they were going to update it they would have done it by now. XP Pen tablets should work with TVPaint , but I've never used an XP Pen tablet so I would suggest you verify with both XP Pen Support and TVPaint Support that your model of XP Pen tablet is compatible with TVPaint. Something you can do is register an account on TVPaint.com (free to register) , then you can download a free Trial Version of the software to test it with your XP Pen tablet.
