I love the way that Kenny Barron is playing the tritone sub on the 25 to Bb. I love the sound of the minor 2 chord minor pentatonic to the tritone sub minor pentatonic sound resolving to the major I. Killin! thanks for sharing the transcription. Woody Shaw's solos on this record are so classic as well! great stuff

Is this similar to scale running?
@rextrumpet
@rextrumpet 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! It's similar in that you are playing throughout the form (if that's what you intend to do) but different in that you are not improvising when you run the scales: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKGmqXWDjZWHiZYsi=q2QCOv384DpM2f0K

Hi. What mouthpiece are you using. Sounds great. The horn is in my short list. I was concerned it might sound strident but you sound great. Thanks for posting the video
@rextrumpet
@rextrumpet 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I was surprised I could play this horn because I used to play a large bore Xeno. I'm not a lead player and don't really play at all like Wayne Bergeron (although I'm a big fan of his!); my foundation is classical, but as a jazz player I've modeled players like Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Anyway - I'm using a Pickett Brass 1-1/2 BC (in other words, just a bit deeper than a Bach 1-1/2 C) with a 27 throat.

I’m currently in 10th grade and I have played trumpet since 5th grade, I am having trouble with range and endurance on the trumpet. My lips give out very fast, and I can barely get a high C out. Do you have any tips?
@rextrumpet
@rextrumpet 7 ай бұрын
Hi - thanks for your question! There could be a number of reasons for your difficulties: you might need to revise your practice approach, or you might have a problem with your placement of the mouthpiece (often it's too low, with the m.p. rim placed in the "red" of the upper lip). I hope you are getting to work with a teacher on a regular basis? In case you might find it helpful, check out this other video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpXKgpmXZpyAotksi=kMTMow1teEpXknXm

So are you playing higher notes or do they just sound higher because its pitched higher?
@rextrumpet
@rextrumpet 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question. For most people, the piccolo trumpet doesn't really add to their range; it just gives us more control and stamina in that top range of the instrument. For the player it feels like you are fingering down an octave to play pitches in the same range as the conventional Bb trumpet.

How exactly does one do a "lip trill"? Is it a movement of your tongue, or really with one's lips? I can't seem to go fast enough to make it sound like a trill; more like a series of slurs.
@rextrumpet
@rextrumpet 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question, and so sorry for the very late response! Yes, "lip" trill is a bit of a misnomer; for most pro players it's more akin to whistling with movement of the tongue. When it comes to lip slurs, most of us will use more jaw and lips movement in the low register but, as we ascend, the jaw and corners stabilize and the workload switches more to the tongue/oral cavity. I have to confess that I don't know exactly how I do these, in terms of the mechanics, but if a slur is stiff, then thinking vowel sounds to change pitch ("aww-eee" to ascend, for example) seems to get the tongue engaged properly.

It sounds very good, what is the difference between a silver one and a lacquered gold
@rextrumpet
@rextrumpet 7 ай бұрын
Thank you! It seems to me that the lacquered one just a bit darker, less vibrant in tone. It's the one Wayne plays; I think he has so much brilliance and vibrance in his sound, the lacquer helps him to get the balanced quality he desires.
