Great presentation and video all together. My wife is in the same boat with ancestry being an avenue for our citizenship. I have already applied for engineer positions and my company has two corporate offices in Italy so I'm waiting to hear back. Do you have any specific recommendations for starting a network so we can hit the ground running? Also any specific recommendations for companies I should consider. I'm currently a ME in the energy sector and prior military.
@iancfrancis14 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment! My visa is to study not to work so my experience is limited to that so far. If you and your wife want to do the process in Italy then finding work that will give you a visa to stay long term while she is doing her process could be a great option. I’ve been told that it is often required for foreigners to have a B2 level CLIQ certificate in the Italian language or something equivalent in order to work for many Italian companies. I think ‘gigroup.it’ is one popular place to search for jobs in Italy. As far as finding a network, we’ve met people who are also doing the process through our advisor here who is helping us. The school I go to also organizes social events and I’ve met people from all ages and backgrounds there. Some already live here on the Elective Resident Visa, some have done the ancestry route and are learning the language afterwards. I made a video about how to get the language learning visa if you’re interested in exploring that option as well. I hope this helps and good luck with everything going forward!

Thank you for this information. Very helpful. Also, with this student visa, are you allowed to work?
@iancfrancis24 күн бұрын
So I was told at the consulate that you are not allowed to work. At the same time, the consulate website in the FAQ section that is linked in the description says that you are allowed to work up to 15 hours/week. This may be true for a student on a normal student visa, but not for this type of visa “National Visa (Type D)”, I’m not sure… I think the safest answer is “no probably not.”

If you are trying to become a resident it’s Torino use as much authentic Italian pronounce the names right and at least pretend you are trying to become local if you want to be taken seriously.
@iancfrancisАй бұрын
I agree, I always use “Torino” in my daily life. I originally recorded it that way but I chose to use “Turin” instead because it’s a video in English and that’s just the name for the city in English. I’m not sure why every language has different names for places or languages. “German” for example, to Germans it’s “Deutsch”, to Italians it’s “Tedesco”, to spanish speakers it’s “Alemán”… Probably a good topic for a future video! Thanks for your comment.

My first visit to Italy was in 2018... and I went again in 2022.... and I love it. Is it the art and the artitecture, the location, the culture and the people? I don't know... but I know I love it. I wouldn't mind moving to Italy... but I have little Italian DNA... and I don't have a lot financially.

Great timing. I'm visiting Turin next week for a week (going to see the All Blacks vs Italy). I moved to Italy a little while ago and I'm enjoying your Italy videos. What is the culture course you're doing?? I wonder if there is something similar in my region. My Italian language is pretty good, but there are major cultural gaps in my knowledge, and if I'm going to live somewhere I think it is good to learn about the history, and to have a common point of reference when talking with people that have lived here their whole lives.
@iancfrancisАй бұрын
Thanks! I’m taking classes through an Italian language school and I’m sure most are pretty similar. They have classes in Italian for advanced learners about art history, fashion, business and things like that. They also organize tours and activities several times a week that are all in Italian as well. I would ask the Italian language school in your area to see what they offer!

Hello Ian, thank you for your videos, I find them quite interesting. Question: you live out of a suitcase, but do you have a home base somewhere, where you keep more belongings, have a permanent address for bank accounts, cell phones registrations, etc.. How are you dealing with these constraints?
@iancfrancis2 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for your comment. We have family in the US where we keep our permanent address. If you’re in the US, you can also get an address at the UPS store. You rent a box for around $150 a year I believe, and it’s an actual address not a “PO Box”, so you can use it for anything that you would use a normal address for. As for our belongings, we don’t have many, we sold most things and gave up our apartment in 2021 when we wanted start traveling long term. Now we rent furnished apartments, we have one here in Italy. Hope that answered your question!

I'm glad that I stumbled upon your video about moving to Italy. I will follow along and learn as much as I can from you about the process. You've already shared a lot of great info and I'm taking down notes. My siblings and I have been in the process of applying for dual citizenship, but the new law that went into affect has caused a snag that we now have to determine what route to take. I am 100% American-Italian with family still living living in Modena (Emilia-Romagna) and have visited many times. I am retiring from higher education in December and want to live my retired years on my own terms with a bit of adjustment for my non-Italian husband who does not share my zeal for living in Italy. He is 81 years old and said that he could see doing short stays of 2 months. Hey, that's better than nothing! Anyhow, I look forward to learning more from your experiences during this new phase of your life. Ciao, Roz

Is this all your own photography? It’s beautiful, great editing too. My husband and I have retired early and my son is graduating high school in a year. We are thinking of selling what we own, including our home here in the US, and start traveling. We are researching so many options, including buying a small vacation home somewhere like Italy to use as a home base and then traveling Europe from there. The idea of slow travel is very appealing to us. We have never been outside the US, other than cruises, but like you say, that sort of travel feels shallow. I’m going to subscribe, I really vibe with your perspective. I hope you continue making videos, you deserve more subscribers. May the algorithms favor you. I will look, but I hope you have or plan to make videos about how to plan a slow travel itinerary. Like is it better to rent an apartment? Stay in a hotel? How far ahead do you book things before leaving a place? Does that all depend on the country? Thanks so much ☺️

Nice summary. I've been a slow traveler for a long time. I have visited 35 countries in most of which I spent more than a month at a time. I have also lived in four countries. As Ian said: if you want to learn anything about a country and its people, you need to spend some time there. The longer you stay, the more you become one of them and the more you feel at home. Speaking the language of your host country makes for an even more profound experience. If money is an issue, you can become a house-sitter and save the money you would normally spend on accommodation. Getting to know all these countries has been a great experience throughout and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.
