From memory around the time of the Tasman series in Australia or a bit later the Hewland box was preferred because the Ratios were easily changed . I think the Lotus’s at the time may have used ZF . The ratio changes were done in the paddocks , those days a gravel surface with a tarp on it. .How things have changed . Oh yes no pneumatic or electric tools at all.

Alright, you just opened the gearbox, swapped the gears, and reassembled it, in less time that it takes me to get into my mechanics clothes, go to the garage, and start working. I think i have to start training a bit on my efficiency ^^

How similar would this be to the Hewland MK 4, i have a 1983 march sport 2000 I recently purchased so I am new to all of this, regardless, thank you for the video!

I know this is an old video but just in case someone bumps into it again I want to share some important info. In the 90's I raced a rotary powered Lola T360 formula Atlantic car with and FT200. I realize this video is not about an FT200 box but an important thing to remember is that these gearboxes are actually VW based. Only the back end is Hewland. I got ripped off badly by a company in the USA when they did a rebuild. They charged me $500usa for a pinion bearing and I found out later that the bearing is actually a VW bearing and they charge $100 canadian for it. What I am saying is these boxes are Volkswagens so go to your local VW dealer and see what you can get. You may save yourself a fortune.

remember changing ratios at Silverstone in 1965 in a rainstorm, no fancy awnings then just an umbrella. I seem to remember the fitting tube was from a plumber! I think that was a Mk V box.

That was great. I don't have a Hewland of any type, just enjoyed watching the job getting done. I did have to download a special application to my converter program to understand how many poofteenths are in a c_ _thair, since I use the barbaric 'Murican measurement system. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I got a good laugh at the poofteenth. I love the little terms we use in working with toys. A fantastic video, I have that special disease that makes me love watching this kind of thing...don't give a rip about porn but show me how to assemble and/or disassemble something mechanical and you have my rapt attention. Absolutely sick, I tell you. I've been told I should be committed.

I think you forgot to mention the OD/ID diameter for the special tube you inserted right before you removed the assembly to hold it together. Thanks.

Thx for the very clear explanation. I have the same Gearboxe on my Formula race car, so I learn a lot. What are the dimension, inner & Outer diameter of the tube you using on the top shaft ? Many thx for sharing.
