Jeff constantly remakes his awful games, because he has a naive fanbase who throw their money at him for the same game on repeat, and he's always ready exploit them. He's the biggest con artist in the independent gaming scene.

I was so worried I hadn't played many of these and then you got to Palace of Sand. I spent a lot of time playing the Lucy's Worlds games! Lots look familiar or are clones of other games I've played tho.

Dancing goils. Where are the dancing goils? Good times! Good times! I seem to have found a kindred soul. Those of us who grew in the 90's who didn't have a gamer dad and had a Mac probably all played the same games. The Exile games were some of my favorites.

One of my favorite classic Mac games! I’ve played this since just after it came out, I was probably about 4 when I first played it, and the game was only a few years old. Love the sound effects. It’s addicting!

Excellent choice for number one. I'm amazed at how many of these games I've never heard of before. I would have been hard-pressed not to include every single Ambrosia SW game on a Top 50 list, which you almost did, but a notable one you left out is Swoop. I lost almost a whole summer to Short Circuit, so it's cool that you mentioned that, if not technically on the list. A severely underrated gem, which I almost never see on top Mac shareware lists, is Sentinels of Ceth, but I can sort of understand why. The later versions included BGM that you could not turn off and I found it annoying. The earliest versions that have no BGM are sublime. Others that I would rate very highly that still hold up today include Pyramad, Spin Doctor, and Triple-A.

I think what was most impressive about this game was the game engine, the use of shaders, and the sound design. The shaders in particular made it feel like the most polished game to come out of Ambrosia.

This is a really good video and very informative! The only minor issue is the explanation of CPU speeds between the 603e and the G3. CPU cycles aren’t a direct indicator of how many instructions are being worked on or completed. A CPU can concurrently execute up to as many instructions as there are execution units in the CPU. For example, the G3 is able issue 4 instructions per clock cycle and execute up to 6 instructions concurrently (1 branch instruction, 2 integer instructions, 1 floating point instruction, 1 load/store, and 1 CR logical or system instruction), whereas the 603e could issue 3 and concurrently execute 5. Additionally, the G3 had a 64-bit FPU, whereas the 603e had a 32-bit FPU, so the 603e took double the clock cycles to execute a 64-bit (aka “double precision”) floating point instruction.

The second game had a glitch that would let you get crazy high scores. If you paused while entering the exit the score would keep going up in the background. Played a bunch it was pretty fun and ran well on my aged mac.

I've loved Crystal Quest ever since I first played it as a middle school student in the late 80's. It's first game I bought and installed when I purchased my first Mac much later. And I learned something new - I had no idea that Crystal Raider ran on the original Mac 128k!

One afternoon my dad, who was self-employed, spent three hours of his workday playing Crystal Quest on our Performa 400. He then threw out the game, and also every single other game on the Mac (Kid Pix, Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, Spacestation Pheta . . .). We kids thought this was unfair - WE weren't the ones who'd spent three hours playing a game! (Not that we wouldn't have, if allowed, ha)

I'm in 4th grade in the mid '90s - one of my teachers brings in a black and white all in one Mac to our classroom. Crystal Crazy is installed. Recess is never the same as Crystal Crazy is played non-stop and there is a line for the little Mac. 🫡🥹 thanks for back to back covering two of my all time favorite Mac games series - the Crystal and Exile/Avernum games were a huge part of my 68k Mac days. You just need to cover SameGame and Scarab of Ra you'll have covered all of my fave share/freeware titles.

I had a blast with this program. It was fun to just sit and watch while eating. Hell, I wish they'd bring it back. I created a giant golden Pyramid in Minecraft and inside, there is a marketplace that I called The Witch's Ball. It is a marketplace heavily inspired by the coming soon screensaver on TTAD. COMING SOON! Barbershop alley cats with throat cancer. COMING SOON! Re-edible meals for extreme lower class.

Personally, I adore the DS Port. It was my introduction to the series and I always enjoyed it. Granted, I was always just kind of dicking about, never bothered with any of the scenarios and just built settlements until i got bored, but unlike a lot of my other games for the DS, I'm pretty sure it actually managed to hang around in my collection. I picked up the PC version just today and I'm beyond curious to see how the real deal holds up compared to my heavily nostalgia-tintet glasses

Hi I'm looking for a game very similar to this, but much more slow-paced as the meteorites would move sluggishly, does it ring a bell? Been looking everywhere, can't seem to find it

I'd quite recommend look at Fantasoft's "Realmz" for those into similar games of this era on the Mac. Not as much of a plot per se (at least in the included scenario), but well made, and the modular scenario system meant it had a ton of different campaigns to play through (albeit of varying quality). But back on topic: Instantly in love with the friendly spiders. Ten outta ten.

The GIFTS! Such sweet weirdos - their arc in 3 is probably my favorite. Also gotta love all of the Foglios’ art in the skill info pages. Proud owner of a shareware scroll of absolution here (Jeff offers them on kickstarters for the new/updated games). This makes me want to fire up my Performa and play Exile 3 more.

My favorite taunt was the Tarth saying “You’re losing! Press CTRL-ALT-DEL.” I still quote it to this day. I played hundreds of hours of this game as a kid. It’s less fun now as an adult, but I thought this was the coolest thing when I was little.
