How about if I want to be a serious classical player but I've mostly always played pop and non classical. I want to play Chopin. Can't play a note. Covered the whole Elton John book now for 3 years, can play most of it well enough. Moonlight Sonata in 10th grade recital, a litt e bit of Rhapsody in blue and I tried to teach myself chopin polaise in Aflat in 9th grade. It was interesting.

Also, that scales book can really help you to choose your chords and see them in real time on paper.

THIS IS COMPLETELY WRONG, this is NOT the NNS. To begin with, the NNS uses normal numbers, not roman numerals, on top of that the chord quality is not specified unless it’s non-diatonic. Also, the NNS does not have a different progression for minor keys and instead views them from the perspective of major keys. Very disappointing pianoly.

But I'm not a beginner, Im just a crappy adult player. I can actually play quite well, i'm almost a true "intermediate" so getting "childrens" lessons turns me off. I wish there was a way to truly guage a player's attained level. Some sort of a "Home Test" which is comprehensive and geared towards determining where a person is weak, noticing nuances in hand positions, etc. etc. etc. This way I can skip all the things I already know and just concentrate on the things I need to learn or get better at in order to bring those abilites equal to whatever other abilities I already posess. See?

Wow, you hit it on the head. I am 57. I started piano lessons at age 7 or 8 and took private lessons for years. By the time I graduated high school in 1985 I had taken lessons on and off, but spent most of my time learning sax and clarinet which helped me greatly in reading music. Later in life I had not played piano since high school and in 2017 I decided I was going to up piano and now that I was an adult it should be easier. Nope. Mostly because everything is self guided and self learning now. I reallly need to have a teacher, I tried to do it for a summer with a teacher and it was a disaster. I've learned mostly on my own and over the last several years I have taught myself to sight read almost anything you put in front of me. I am currently working out all my Christmas tunes which will take me a few months. But my biggest problem is scales. I know why they're important, I know there are a lot of them and it is very overwhelming. So I don't do it much because I'm not involved with a program or a school. I give myself tons of leeway because I am only responsible for the material to myself not a class or a teacher. I"m doing ok, but I could be doiing a LOT better with a good teacher. Unfortunately, we don't have any locally. I can play the heck out of Billie Joel, Elton John and tons of oldies.

I am an older person learning the piano, and used to worry about the pedal (but didn't have any bad habits) as I waited until I was ready to learn about the pedal. Then I saw, AND LISTENED, to your video. I now feel far more confident to play the way I've always dreamed. Thank you so very much for presenting your pedal video.

The app is just brilliant. Don't use the watch every time but it may be more useful in a group environment. I think you can sync' multiple wrist devices to one phone so everyone in the band is on the same beat. Oh and battery life in the wrist device is pathetic. Keep the charger close.

I’m 27 and always wanted to play piano but never had the opportunity. Could just about afford a decent keyboard but can’t really afford lessons every week so I am teaching myself through KZbin but not with synthesia as I find it really confusing and it slowed down my progress completely when I first started playing. I don’t have the best coordination with two hands and struggle with hand independence but hoping this will come with practise. I believe I have a good ear for music and learn little bits of my favourite songs by ear. I don’t think I will ever be able to read music but that’s okay because I don’t really have an interest in learning complex classical pieces.

I took some semesters of piano in college back in the late 1990s. I graduated in 1998 and probably kept playing for a couple years after that, but I never had a very large repertoire of songs. My problem was that I would tend to memorize the songs I liked playing, which meant that I was just fine as long as I didn't mess up, but if I did, I often wouldn't be able to easily start up again from the mistake. Lately I've been considering trying to take up the piano again I really did love it when I could play something well when I was younger. I would love it even more if I was better at sight reading music so that I could pick up new things more easily. The only problem is that I don't have much time most days between work and other obligations. I do at least still have the old keyboard that I had back in college. Assuming it still works, I wouldn't have to go anywhere to tinker on the keys a bit.

I've been playing guitar since I was 10, and now I'm 28. I've been saying how I'd like to learn piano for over 10-15 years. I would trade guitar for piano for sure. So now I've bought a digital piano and hoping to learn both! Not sure how it'll work out as I'm not a kid anymore AND am used to a completely different instrument.

I have found this very helpful. Saw the Db tip in another of your videos and tried it with great success. Also the advantage of 'C' for reverse direction 2 handed scales. Up to 'D' with that one a day later. I'm definitely going to follow the order you suggest. In traditional piano lessons years ago it was all focused on number of sharps and flats (up to 3) I had always assumed what that what turns out to be the easiest keys were in fact the hardest. In my own misguided exploration I have previously stumbled on the key of C minor and found it very ergonomic. Just seems to fall under the shape of my hands. Funny thing is back then when studying music full time for 3 years (guitar major) I used to grab my guitar in the morning and while watching music videos on TV try to pick the key of the songs. (Something my teachers thought very useful) It surprised me back then just how many were in the key of C minor. Mostly your dance stuff. Groove based. Guess that was why.

Thanks for throwing private piano lessons and teachers under the bus!!! I use music that the student is interested in playing right from the start! I've taught for over 25 years. I DON'T teach adult students like they are children ever!! How awful of you to say this!! I use a chord based approach right from the beginning. YOU are not the only teacher out there that teaches chords, lead sheets, arpeggio etc. !!! Oh and your promoting yourself on KZbin after you just told people to NOT TRY TO LEARN from You Tube! What a joke! 😅😅😅

You're an excellent teacher and hope you do more live shows like this one. I have Roland FP-30X that is awesome and you implanted into my head no need to upgrade to a more expensive model as I advance to pro-level since you're still playing on a Roland model that came out in 2013. Thank you. And Roland regardless of model is the best for anyone thinking about buying a piano.

I find it interesting the number of older people commenting here. I'm 71 and have been playing guitar most of the last 60 years. I'm interested in developing my keyboard skills for many reasons, not the least of which being onset arthritis in base of left thumb. I have always found it hard co-ordinating left and right hands on Keys, which is kind of strange given the requirement to co-ordinate both to play a single note on guitar. Probably the bigger issue is co-ordination in my brain in hearing and playing 2 seperate lines, as in counterpoint. I studied music full time for 3 years 20+ years ago where everyone had to do basic keyboards, which included scales in 2 hands over 1 octave. I can't believe I was not told about Db and the same timing in thumb switch. This has been for me the greatest revelation and I'm now ripping through all sorts of chord and melody combinations in that key. The course I did only went as far as 3 sharps and 3 flats. As I'm now an age pensioner I have all the time in the world to very slowly and deliberately forge myself some new neural pathways. I am in NO way a sight reader and reading 2 lines of music as in printed piano scores has always terrified me. One thing a classical guitar teacher told me years ago has stuck with me. "Don't practice what you can already play. Practice what you can't" I have tried applying this to the thumb switch in two handed scales in a 5 note pattern and it seems to be helping. If I can get the thumb switch on auto pilot I think it may help heaps.

Sounds great! However, being retired on a fixed income makes money a little short. It seems to get into her program, you have to be on a 45-minute call to talk to her or her staff. That tells me her program, while probably very good, is also much too expensive for me. There's no sense calling her as I know I can't afford it. It's not that it cost too much, it's that I can't afford it.

Ive been playing guitar for over 30 years, and all of it was learned by ear, playing with friends, etc. Recently I've decided to go all in and finally try to learn music theory, read music properly not just tabs. For the few weeks Ive been trying to understand the circle of fifths on my guitars. Watching several several videos and it wasn't until just now, that I see it on a piano and listening to you, Im finally getting it!! Thank you so much.

As a long time Nashville musician and producer, I'm always glad when the Nashville Number System is being promoted. Your video is excellent and well done, and your explanations are clear and concise. However I would like to correct you on the scale you are using. 1, 2m, 3m, 4, 5, 6m, 7dim is not the NNS. This is a widespread misconception spread by music theory purists who really don't understand the NNS. All the chords in the NNS are MAJOR, always Major. If you write or call out a 2, or 3 or 6 here in Nashville, every world class musician I have worked with for more than 50 years will play those chords as MAJOR chords. A minor chord must be designated as minor...2m, or 6- , there is never a time when a number by itself will be automatically be played as a minor chord in the NNS. I can understand why you are using this scale since there are so many videos with this wrong information, and it doesn't diminish the fact that your video is excellent. If you get a chance, check with some working Nashville musicians and you'll find that I am giving you good information. I wish you the best.

Practice with a metronome! As 6 year old I got my 1st music lessons from my mom on recorder. Lame? No, that recorder was just a tool. What she was really teaching me was count, count, count! I can still hear her say that😅. Thank you mom❤. Use the metronome on eight or sixteenth notes depending on your song, not depending on the time signature. Later change to the time signature. And SLOW DOWN when you start with a new song: set half the tempo at most! Don't feel ashamed because the song sounds lame on half speed. Give your brain time to process, a lot is going on. That metronome is brutal, keeping up with it is difficult enough. If you cannot keep up, you need to slow down more. Playing the right note with the right finger is more important.
