I have a question. Maybe a video request eventually :) in Reason you had a workflow where it allowed you to work on one section of a song at a time and then arrange the sections later. While Logic has an arrangement helper, its not the same. Have you figured out a workflow that you think will work for you and be somewhat comparable to your Reason workflow? Also i felt my brain expand when you basically showed the beat scholar plugin in the MIDI patterns…. Games changer for me…. Im going to have to invest some cycles into!! Cheers!
@PaulOrtiz5 күн бұрын
Thanks man! I'm glad you dig it. It's a really interesting way of developing complex rhythmical ideas. The nice thing is you can mix and match region types as you need them. You can also shift+option+drag to create an instanced copy of the beat, so you only have to change the pattern once and it'll update anywhere you use it! As to your question...yeah I love Blocks. The arranger lane kiiinda works the same way? But it does this weird thing where it always wants to have arrangement markers 'touching' so things get screwy as soon as you start moving them. If I can figure it out maybe that + instanced copying like I mentioned up there might function like Blocks, but admittedly not as good!
@TheMooky4 күн бұрын
@@PaulOrtizI’ve had some issues with it copying time signature changes with alt drag…. I’ve ended up just telling logic everything is in like 2/8 just for the downbeat clicks and putting making blank arrangement sections around the parts I’m working on I hope someone finds a better solution or logic just implements blocks…. They’ve got the loops thing but they’re just not the same Thank you for the response❤

I’ll need to try this out. It’s like an advanced version of Reason’s drum sequencer. Thanks for sharing.
@PaulOrtiz5 күн бұрын
For sure! I do like Drum Sequencer but they missed a trick limiting it to 16 steps. 32 or 64 would've been amazing (I know you can fake this with multiple patterns). And both could benefit from conditional triggering as well. I.e. if lane x is playing, lane y is silent. Or play ever x repeats. That kinda thing. But yeah Pattern Regions are sick!

There are still a lot of things I love about Reason. I did a video a while ago that was like a breakup with an ex or something lol but I still load it up and do weird, crazy stuff that's just hard to do in other DAWs. And the Rack Plugin in Logic is like a dream combo (pending the automation bug that support are working on). But yeah as a full environment for bigger projects where I can save all my templates and presets and get more done on tight deadlines, Logic is deffo where it's at.
@angel-_-_-_4 күн бұрын
@@PaulOrtiz The reason rack does has its charm, but I'm sure you can easily tell by now just considering the features that Logic has it would take over 10 years for Reason to ever implement half of the features that it has, and that's not even an exaggeration. It is what it is, but also Reason is unlikely to progress much, versus Logic - just look at all the incredible new features that are constantly being added like clip launching etc.

I was composing with East West's Hollywood Strings 2 last night, and getting hugely frustrated by the CC values. If I play within a region, the CCs would return to a quieter level. I'm HOPING this here is the answer to that, but I'll let you know!
@PaulOrtiz5 күн бұрын
@@DanBarrowMusic hey! No reason why not I guess? Lemme know! There’s also a setting that sends pitch been, expression a modulation reset at the end of clips. That might work for you. Can’t for the life of me remember where it is. But that seems specifically designed to address stuck cc after automation!
@DanBarrowMusic5 күн бұрын
... it doesn't. When I press play in the middle of a region, regardless of where I've set the CCs (and I've set them to full in a region at the beginning of the project), a value somewhere reduces the level. I cannot work out which CC and which value it is, yet.
@PaulOrtiz5 күн бұрын
@@DanBarrowMusic have you tried setting a value for the CC in track automation and then overriding it with region automation, with the Region Automation overrides track automation setting enabled?
@DanBarrowMusic5 күн бұрын
@@PaulOrtiz So, after much work and hair-pulling, I realised that HWS2 has its very own 'quirks' in terms of CCs, including a macro in the OPUS automation window, that links modulation and expression CC11 onto CC1. Something like that. I changed some global setting and removed the track header, and it seems to work now! Thanks.Dan Barrow

the disco was unexpected. seems like with every DAW there's always 1 feature missing that some other DAW has.

The disco is ALWAYS unexpected. Yeah no DAW has it all, Logic is probably the closest for me yet and even then it's missing a few things (independent automation clips from Reason, proper channel and plugin linking from Cubase, pitch envelopes from Cubase/Live). But I'd say it's like 95% there for me. So far.

I think the update is rubbish because there’s not enough changes to call this an actual “Upgrade” from 12! The fact the mix console is ancient & is not practical for new users to get to grips with it needs updating! The scrolling the mixing console is long & stupid yeah it is a version of a real desk console but it’s digital! Why make users scroll down & up surely the full desk can be displayed on the main screen without scrolling! Surely if the entire desk was visible it would be more realistic & from the user selected are section it can zoom in! But the scrolling thing is rubbish surely if the entire desk was on show the different function can be expanded! They can expand when in use then return to the full desk view otherwise what’s the point of it because as it is It feels restricted & not fun to use it may have been acceptable back in the day but it should have been updated years ago! If Reason had a better Mixing Desk Visual Presentation that was user friendly rather than just a gimmick that was a novelty back in the day, But today the feature is not good to use because it is to much work for instance the simple task of controlling the volume of the track is all the, Way at the top of the mixing desk console navigation to this location is bothersome because it could & should be in sight at all times! If it is mimicking the same as a real desk console the user can see the entire desk console & controls so it the user that focuses on a particular section! Reason has had the same mixing desk console presentation for ever when it was cool because it was different & familiar but it’s 2024-25 This feature is rubbish because it hasn’t evolved or improved it is just the same awkward workflow that hasn’t changed to be improved! Reason has done the bare minimum to this update disguised as an upgrade! ♾️⚖️🪶⚖️♾️
@PaulOrtizАй бұрын
You mean the track 'trim' pot at the top? You don't really need to use that for controlling track volume (unless you wanna make a quick tweak without messing up fader automation). In the master output strip of the mixer, there are several small boxes that let you turn on/off different areas of the mixer depending on what you want to see. You can hold alt (or option) and click any one of them to 'collapse' all mixer sections, and then just add what you need. It's one way of seeing more of the mixer at once.

If anyone wants to know THE absolute quickest, easiest way to use a high pass filter side chain detecter for the reason master bus compressor, here's how to do it, with zero audio degradation quality or any potential issues that the control room out method has. Put the master stereo imager as the first thing in your master bus FX inserts. This will NOT affect the sound in any way other than trigger the master compressor, as you will soon see. Insert the rack master bus plugin next, instead of using the one on the mixing board. Algorithm is identical plus you get wet/dry, huge bonus there. If you have been inserting plugins as normal from the left browser or right click and browse insert, they should have auto cabled. Leave the cabling as it, like a normal FX chain. Press tab and on the back of the stereo imager you will see a secondary out and a slider, make SURE it is set to hi band. Take that secondary hi band output into the sidechain input of the master bus compressor. Leave everything at default in the imager plugin, press the sidechain button on the front of the compressor, now the crossover dial on the stereo imager will act as a high pass detection trigger for the master bus compressor. It works flawlessly and is SO easy and you get that delicious wet/dry knob that you don't get on the master buss comp on the main mixer. You can add as many effects as you like in the master bus insert chain, before or after the stereo imager/master bus compressor combo, just like you normally would, and just keep the stereo imager connected normally in the chain so audio can pass through to other effects. You see, it won't affect the main audio at all as the secondary out takes over, and all that out is doing is acting as a frequency detector for the compressor. This can work for any compressor by the way with a side chain input, if that compressor does not have an internal EQ sidechain of its own already. It just works, and really, really well. The master bus compressor sounds amazing now on hard transient material, with gain reduction no longer dominated by the kick drum. In trance I usually have it anywhere from 250 to 400hz, but, as with anything, YMMV. Hope this helped, as it's much more convoluted setting it up with the master compressor on the mixer, and then you have to do a second convoluted setup to add a wet/dry as well. I know it looks neat on the mixing desk, but it's just not worth it when the rack plugin is more flexible and easier to use.

It was a missed opportunity IMO. Sadly there isn't much precedent for devices receiving massive overhauls or updates. Parsec, RV7000 and OctoRex are the only ones I can think of. As it is I think we'd need a new device. I'm aware there might also be plugins that just do this without any additional steps required. I'm still looking for an elegant solution though. Groove Agent SE can do it but it's fiddly and there's lots of setup required. I've tried Serato in the past but didn't get on with it. I just want Simpler in Reason basically.
