There's a lot to be said for Steve Smolger, the referee, in regards to letting these guys really go at it, and not seperating them all the time, like some modern referees tend to do all too often. Big respect for the brother. RIP

Coming here again, like many times before... but this time after seeing a Teddy Atlas interview from this year (2024) and this phrase he said there sums it up pretty nicely: he was telling his whole camp, that George "Ain't trying to win a fight... he's trying to win a life back" and that his heart sunk when he saw he was wearing the same trunks than in Zaire. Redemption is a pretty powerful driving force.

The best thing about this fight was that Leonard was starting to decline, which makes fights with great champions more compelling. People really forget how much Lalonde smacked him up early in this fight and had him in trouble. But to his enduring credit, SRL was a DOG...this comeback and finish is legitimately one of the most emotional things I've watched in sports. Everyone watching at my mom's boyfriend's house was hootin' and hollerin' when he finished Lalonde.

When Carmen lost the second Robinson fight, he was asked by a reporter in the dressing room whether his closed eye was the cause of his defeat…he said that, no…the other one was fine…THAT was Carmen Basilio.

Commentators were so bias against Ray in this fight. I’m glad he put him on his back twice! Ha One of the best to ever do it!
20:25 commentators are crazy, they were losing their shit over this combo, yet not a single punch hit directly “look how accurate”: proceeds to miss

Mayweather said himself that Emmuanel Burton 'Augustus' was the toughest guy he ever fought. I mean there is a sort of inadequacies in this statement because normally a fight you win in under 10 rounds can't necessarily be your toughest fight even though Augustus proved to be a challenge for Floyd, and his first real one as a professional. But when you look at his style, he emplpyed a lot of upper body movement and heae movement to throw Mayweather's accuracy off. It worked for most of the fight until Burton ran out of gas. Then Mayweather managed to stop him in the 9th round. This fight essentially makes me wonder how Mayweather would have done in the 80s super featherweight division with S. Sanchez, A. Arguello, W. Gomez, A. Nelson, Jeff Fenech, Brian Mitchell, Rocky Lockridge, Olivares, JCC, Juan Laporte, and other skilled opponents at 130. If he struggled with him, I'm not so sure if he would have beaten most of those guys as they had better technique, footwork, head movement, conditioning, and ring iq than Burton did and Burton gave Floyd all he could handle until he got tired. Respect to Mayweather but people overrate his career due to the weakness of 130 lbs once he got into the spotlight which heavily inflated his record and made him look better than what he actually was.

And then the fight....Haye had enough trouble trying not to trip and fall never mind knocking anybody out. Definitely not the alpha male. At all.

Such an epic. Emmanuel coming in set on showing he could live right on the inside, then dancing into that little daylight and staying there. Two great warriors all told, and only that liver shot special saving the day for Ward, on this away card anyway. Classic.

I was a massive Oscar fan at this point as a 16 year old kid. I really wanted to see him and Whitaker and it was all set but we just had to get through this fight and I knew Hurtado was one of those tricky Cuban fighters. I sat and watched this fight worried to death. Round by round it felt like my dream fight was finished. Needless to say in round 10 the guy who wasn't known at all for power shots managed to pull it off. I was jumping up and down with excitement.

48:13 The way the sportscaster actually lifts Davey's head to get his attention and focus on the TV cameras is disturbing. Treating him like he's nothing more than a ratings commodity. Showing no concern about his health and not even asking him if he feels well enough to talk. He actually lifts Davey's head twice in the interview 49:07. You could see him swaying on the ropes and at any moment Davey is about ready to collapse. He made it as far as the dressing room before he collapsed and slipped into a coma. Never to regain consciousness again thereafter.
