"Another family member you stood by" Let me tell everybody that The National Guard probably couldn't have removed Mrs. Petty from Lee's side during his time of need! Times were tougher back then & so were the people of those hard times, simply put they were cut from a different cloth than the generations that followed them 💪 God bless The Petty Family & RIP to all who have passed on 🙏✝️

I love "gold" like this, straight from the lips of the ones who created a racing dynasty. Right from memory, the Petty's impressions of what it was like to be "boots on the ground" in late 40's- 50's NASCAR. "It was lots different." "We had to RACE." "Nobody had any money." Great work Petty Bros.

My father, Les Heath Sr and Charlie Lester towed this car around for shows in the late 70s and early 80s. I have quite a few pics of me standing beside it in our driveway and a few of the racetracks/hotels we stayed at during races.

I thought "LeeBoy" did a darn fine job as a color commentator for CBS at the '79 Talladega 500. Seemed relaxed & genuine. Especially considering it was on short notice for Lee, (David Pearson was scheduled to be in the booth with Ken Squire for that race but instead had to sub for Dale Earnhardt, who was injured the week before at Pocono).

When you have people that love racing like Wayne and Ralph and treat NASCAR like an actual auto racing series, it does indeed become successful ;) Nowadays it’s just random people making a racing series into WWE and ball sports on wheels.

I can certainly relate to Mr. Whitaker’s growing up as a fan of Richard Petty racing. As an eleven year old boy, I first had an opportunity to meet Richard Petty while attending one of my first races in Bristol, Tennessee. The team was having a meal at one of the local motel restaurants, and The King walked up to me in the motel parking lot and autographed a large photo post card featuring the #43 Plymouth Roadrunner. I was amazed that this famous race car driver would take the time to give me his autograph on a photo of his famous race car. I treasured that autograph for many many years. Over the years I have, had several more opportunities to meet Richard Petty. Each time has basically been the same as that first encounter with him in Bristol, He is warm, genuine and so easy to approach in conversation. And each time that I had an opportunity to meet Richard he took the time to give me his autograph. I believe that some of today’s NASCAR drivers could take a lesson or two from Richard Petty on how to relate to the race fans. Many of today’s drivers are so busy, they just can’t stop and sign a bunch of autographs for race fans. Richard Petty always stopped and made time for the race fans. Thanks so much to Petty Brothers Racing for having Chase Whitaker on their channel.

In 1969 I got my own TV and one of the first things I watched was Wide World of Sports that had some of the Firecracker 400. Since I was growing up in California the only driver name I recognized was Richard Petty, I was disappointed that day but I still became a big fan.

My dad and I were at the 1969 Firecracker 400 sitting in the Fireball Roberts Grandstand. Richard drove the Ford Talladega in the race started fourth and finished fifth. We also attended the 1968 Firecracker 400 which was our first NASCAR race to attend. Richard drove that beautiful Petty Blue and White 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner which became my all time favorite Petty car. We attended many Firecracker 400’s and Daytona 500’s and met Richard and his family many times. Saw Richard win in person 1979 and 1981 Daytona 500’s.

What a great tribute to Richard Petty superfan Chase-and Julian Petty's involvement. Chase's blog is AWESOME, including on some of the obscure Petty cars, like the Caprice and the Oldsmobile! And he retold Brian Hauck's story of reuniting Richard with the spring the 1980 Pocono wreck in 2019! And congratulations to Ritchie on his daughter's graduation! GREAT episode. And thank you both for being so hospitable to me when I was in North Carolina recently! -Joe
