Why is this game so dark? What can we do to make it easier to play?
@korunick6 күн бұрын
The game is pretty dark, in general. Almost everything happens underground, inside a windowless government facility, and/or at night. You can turn up the brightness a bunch or fiddle with renderer settings, but the game was really dark, even back in 2000 on old hardware. We spend most of this episode deep underground, but you can see when we get above ground in Paris, there are lights and stuff.

It was a little easier in the NES version because the walking movement was so slow, you could really be precise about it. In this version, the characters move so fast that single wrong clicks can really push you too far in the wrong direction. Fortunately, if you're careful, you can get through these areas by rotating the controller when you step on the goofy tiles.

That certainly was it! Quite a way to cap the series off with just enough changes to get you through the end. Overall, this was an excellent series you did, and it easily sucked me into the whole thing as it became a fun tradition to comment with the details as they came up, and playing alongside you was a fun way to play for me too, whether I was ahead or playing catch up, it was so much fun. The last bout with the dreaded Infinity Corridor was this neat medley of randomly chosen Abyss bosses, it's rather neat all the battle music got it's own send-off with the Heavenly bosses and now this too. Meanwhile, beating the Dragon God took its toll as a distilled, pure boss of a boss made him his own beast compared to a great many of the bosses throughout the game, but he's down, and we're done with all the shiny new content the game has to offer! I remember back then when you were seeing how far you could go without skills, library, or grinding back when the series started. You learned some great early lessons that shaped the playthrough such as the power of resisting elemental damage. That said, it was fun to cover each of the characters and make a case for all of them. There were many with boons that were super cool, and seeing the team you settled on was charming as well! You got some excellent mileage out of the characters you picked; Yuugi was an absolute powerhouse and was a fitting Holy Blessing user to blast down the final boss; a fitting way to conclude since she joined to take on the strongest foes in the first place. I was entirely blown away with Nazrin's use too, getting quintupled power is insanely useful via Genji Glove and made her just as viable an Extra Attack unit with an edge over the competition who share the skill. Tanks like Komachi, Meiling, and Cirno were interesting choices for this run, while EVA 'tanks' like Rumia and Aya were also neat additions to see fielded as likely very untouchable units who helped a ton in the off-screen grind. Cirno ended up having a permanent lead slot despite not being built for there was interesting because Blizzard Blowout + Aya's speed control felt like the "strongest" combo for quite a long time before it fell off near the end. Meiling became a stellar second-line tank due to her Gatekeeper Nap, and a useful per turn anchor with Dragon God's Power, while you demonstrated the sheer power of HP with Komachi, punishing enemies with her Wrath of Edokko God of Death and supporting her team greatly with Awakened Avici hits. Personally it was a little weird seeing Kasen take the far right slot - though Iku being where she was as a buffer was great even without Tenshi - if only because Kasen can easily tank herself, but I do like that you focused on what she was great at, dealing damage, and it gave her a role not unlike Sky Creation Kanako putting a tanky unit in the slot meant for the squishiest units. Thank god for AoE heals, Reimu was awesome support while Rumia got to shine offensively a ton. Patchouli and Eiki were also great for their damage boosts and amazing users of subclasses. It was an splendid team, though it's too bad some couldn't make the cut like Wriggle whose poison carried much of the game until most things resisted her poison, but I think the team overall turned out super well. I'm really happy about making the character overviews plus the sheets that I did for Awakenings, and giving essentially a whole-sale reviews of the entire roster of characters. It not only showed how replayable the game is with new characters, but the depth the game has. It was too fun, and got me invested into the game quite deeply. It took many hours of testing, but it was extremely fun to learn the ins and outs of the characters at play. It's crazy to think you consider your playthrough a helpful resource to the game, but I'm flattered you valued my time making things for your playthrough that much. It's been very nice to see your replies and reactions to each thing I put down, so I'm glad to have been a part of this! Can't wait to see the sequel to this game, Labyrinth of Touhou Tri seems poised to be amazing, that's for sure. Quite the solid foundation laid down by this game.

Definitely had my ideas and expectations tested multiple times throughout this game! It was pretty fun running a quirky team and learning how to optimize (and how *often* to optimize) was quite an experience! Thanks for sticking around and providing so much helpful and detailed commentary and advice! It was really interesting hearing your perspectives, advice, and ideas! Plus, your detailed comments and Awakening summaries are a valuable resource for others who are playing this game in the future. It was fun to pick some of my favorite Touhou characters and go through this huge adventure with them! Some of the bosses were REALLY frustrating, but all in all there was a lot of strategizing and some fun and interesting puzzles, including some of the bosses as puzzles, too! It was kind of too bad how things got grindy right at the end. Still, it was gratifying to push through and finish off the Full Power Dragon God and The Will of Gensokyo! The third one will be coming out soon, but I'll probably hold off on playing it for a while because dang, 300+ hours. It'll be a while before I'm ready to invest that kind of time again. Thanks again for everything!

The most optimal opponent is Heaven Akyuu, two notches above Rinnosuke in the video. With your 150% with Money-growing and Moneybag-growing trees, you can use Gold Rush boosted by Appraiser, with Komachi, get up to a 297% increase if you manage to get one more Violent Green Rupee from the Silver Plated Sharks on 6F (which you you can get with Luck in Pluck + Rare Metal Detector at level 1). Unfortunately, most Heavenly bosses give you mere pennies for beating them, the fact is Akyuu is the quickest to get to and gives the most money because the best money to EXP ratio is Miko, but not only are they a few bosses into being able to fight them, leading to more EXP than money overall. I mention this because the gauntlet is SOMEHOW slower on money gaining then it is to just refight Akyuu. That is if money is your goal over EXP, using both is fair game, but it's likely money is the linchpin that will help you beat the Dragon God since going all in on HP and offenses are the honest-to-god keys to winning the fight, especially HP as some characters can be built to live the onslaught.
@korunick6 ай бұрын
Using an Appraiser would have been a good way to optimize the run a bit more--that's a great idea! I'd have to go look at my old episode for the numbers, but there are a few bosses up there that drop decent gold... I wonder if their placement would allow a 4-6 boss run on the West side that still worked out a bit better. The other issue is that each run of the gauntlet takes me 48 minutes, and I don't think I could tolerate 48 minutes of the same boss over and over again...
@DeityDiz936 ай бұрын
In that case, Rinnosuke, Nitori, Parsee are good extra choices besides Akyuu. If not needing to be optimal, you should get more money than EXP.

This fight is honestly a brutal reminder that some team members are better than others. Given the, frankly, preferential treatment of some characters in the game, you're going to end up with stuff like the wiki barely able to stand up with the right level recommendations for some teams people make it here with. There are so many factors to consider beyond just some "Recommended Level", like what characters are you using? What items are you running? What subclasses are you using and on who? What's your library level and are they scaled based on cost rather than number? Do you have all the tome upgrades, jewel maxed out, or any copy Awakening items? Are you running the right maximization for EVA? Is there someone better you should have replaced a unit with? All those questions are rhetorical, that is to say, a simple level recommendation, tier list, or write-up does not stand-in for a feature complete guide that is honestly required to beat this boss with this exact team, or even my own team. The easiest answers to these questions lead to some of the most broken answers like "Just use Renko to tank, Healer Eirin's overheal, Akyuu's Invulnerability, or Nitori's power!" and these answers are the boring solutions and frankly unsatisfying to field as it means giving up on your current team which I do believe you should use to play at your leisure. I think the point of the ??? bosses IS to take it on at the level that's appropriate for the team, and that level recommendations are arbitrary, because of course you'd beat the boss by now if you had any of the characters and the most optimal subclasses, items, and money grinded out to win, but I bet it'd be a lot happier if you could win with what you have without compromising the team that got you here. I hope a lot of people watching realize that for most part, this is the first person to have an English playthrough the whole game to get here, and I know of only one other on here that was in Japanese playthrough. While I could comment a lot saying Korunick could change this and that, the reality is he is playing the game 100% right, and if it comes down to relying on Rumia's EVA without Mystia or Suika's aid, then just know this fight has gotten VERY close to being finished before, even without maxed out tomes, jewels, or the perfect sweep of items. I give this effort full props and credit for making it so far, as there have been some very commendable changes to push this fight further, it's really awesome to see how far this fight has come, Good luck with this last stretch, I don't see there being much more to play left after this, you're almost free.
@DeityDiz937 ай бұрын
You still have my congratulations for beating this boss this episode! It's a grueling fight and thankfully you had the right people for it, and the TP left out on the front row to not get booted out having to redo the whole fight, which is why that TP drain mechanic is there, to catch you off-guard and wipe your front line out and restarting the whole fight anew; pretty bloodthirsty move, on top of the fact that the sword can be revived by the arms too. The method to getting through the fight ended up going well since Patchouli is literally the best character in the game at destroying the Right Arm in a timely manor. Lots can go wrong, and after watching many of the attempts, it was rough knowing that it felt like you had to make every mistake before you could win, but thankfully you managed to avoid it all, and sheer power pushed you past the end point! Through all the silly time-space warps, the removal of hit points magic point or travel points, and building of enough turns, this is honestly a memorable send off to the game with a battle to remember, for sure. Do forgive my lack of commenting, having time to play along with has gotten harder and I didn't want to comment until I made it to where the game was. I wasn't too far behind in anything but library and money in general, due to me skipping a majority of random enemy fights using the flee method, I have been up on EXP but behind on money the whole game. It's taken me beating Heavenly Akyuu literally hundreds of times to make up the difference in library levels and I'm still several orders of magnitude behind in terms of overall money, but now also level since there is a lot of levels to be gained, and my focus is on using library to win over raw leveling, too. Just know I've been keeping up with the series!

Thanks for the comment! It was a tough fight, and there was still some good fortune needed to win! That combination of the hefty regenerating arms and crushing counterattacks turned the fight into such a slow slugfest! And of course, we had to cut off all of our own counterattacks to avoid getting into a deadly chain of back-and-forth! Good to hear your run is proceeding well! Repeating the Heavenly Akyuu fight is a good way to make that money back, for sure.
@DeityDiz937 ай бұрын
I sort of feature completed my run with the help of Eiki, who was able to two-shot the right arm's SPI weakness with WINNER's Sword of Light then Last Judgement when not in Morale Inversion, not at all unlike Patchouli who was basically hitting the Right Arm with weakness damage via Silent Selene, she really did use the Ame-no-Murakumo's power against it, and that was awesome. As for PAR, Reimu absolutely does get a bonus to hers via Toxicologist + Modified Taser I found out, enough to get her to concentrate between PARs when using Yin-Yang Orb though these were slim margins I admit, and the Left Arm isn't that scary if it gets a turn. When both arms were out, I got to use Paralyzing Incense to occasionally stop the Right Arm with a PAR too (though Sakuya is better at it), limiting the amount of Greatsword of Calamity moves it got off and using Eirin to buy precious turns to outlast that; but like you, I also went the route of EVA using a buffed up Rinnosuke in place of Hina for my team because he had EVA High Boost. I had an honestly great time with this fight, it was very unique compared to the first and second bout with the sword, and I found the turns needed to take it down tense with its ability to heal so much HP if it got its MP for HP attack off on someone with MP, or the way I had to catch on to its TP busting plan on my second proper go. This really did have a neat puzzle-like element to it, and while I thought King's gimmick was a lot more nifty, this fight was honestly a cool way to handle the arms. Sad as it is though the sword was not very kind to your team as it was to mine given the attempts it took. It takes a lot to bring the bastard sword down, for sure.
@DeityDiz936 ай бұрын
It was a tough fight, one I ended up having to do differently than you but could have ended up somewhat similar. About all you needed to change is using Concentration on Patchouli before hitting the Right Arm, who can two-shot that arm with a +140% damage boost, and can get away with High Stakes from Gambler; though, lots of people at this point would go with Holy Blessing to maximize the power with Three Legendary Swords. I ended up using Eiki for the right arm, WINNER's Sword of Light then even Last Judgement for non-Morale Inversion for an ATK build I've been using. The pierce was not too bad on this boss as the DEF stat of this boss was quite through the roof on the Right Arm and the Sword itself, so the SPI weakness slamming at 150% came in huge handy, though your Patchouli's Silent Selene with Grand Incantation due to affinity pierce with a better damage formula and delay, while Eiki needed Iku's Normal Attack spam to deal the two shot. Getting around the Greatsword of Calamity did actually take a swap, Rinnosuke for Hina. They fill a similar debuff role with Rinnosuke being more focused against ATK or MAG debuffs, while being way more evasive as opposed raw defensive. EVA High Boost came in luck with Eirin's maximum overheal which kept around a number of units of mine. By all accounts, Rumia is better than Rinnosuke in terms of EVA and damage output. This was quite a fun fight. It had some fun mechanics. It was quite kind to my team choices, though it took a little bit of over boosting in the library to around the extreme defensive stats. I'm beyond happy that I found a way to make Eiki work out about as well as Patchouli makes me extremely happy I included them as this throws Eiki's wiki entry as 'benchwarmer' tier out the window.

Thanks for the comment! At this point, I'm trying to see what I need to have my current team be sufficient to win. In addition, although I could use Yukari's skill to give my front row a turn, that's not actually the problem here. As soon as the Dragon God takes more than a few % damage, on his next turn, he turns red and *in the same turn* throws out two extremely powerful PHY attacks. We need to avoid or tank those attacks so that we can set up a PAR lock with Reimu or somebody. So far, I don't think I have anyone that can tank both of those attacks, so we're trying to dodge them. In fact, in the previous episode, Rumia, Cirno, and Aya were doing a pretty good job of avoiding them, but this time the RNG just wasn't on my side. I'll try again next week!
