What an incredible interview. Hard not to love Bill as he has us laughing and this could have gone on for hours that’s how great it flowed. Bill is a legend and had his mark on some of my favorite songs ever. Hearing him in Chicago was beyond words and he certainly brought that band to a new level along with the “New” guys. His solo material always blows me away and he’s a musical genius. He’s humble and such a talent that he could of pulled off playing trumpet and singing :)

Air = tone on a trumpet. Trumpet playing really helped me with singing, later, and gave me a Magic Dick kind of approach to the harmonica. I never understood the harp like a harp player. I was always thinking like a trumpet player. I could do the licks the other harp players did, but it wasn't instinctive. And people would always say "You're playing trumpet licks, aren't you?" "Yes. Yes, I am." Of course, the harp ain't built like a trumpet, so it took a lot of work on my chops to sort of sound OK. It ended up helping me develop a unique harp style. It also set me back, a little, because other harp players just naturally found what was natural on the harp; whereas, I was always trying to bend the harp to my will, against its natural tendencies.

You have some great guests with fantastic historical stories. But I got to point out you continually talk over them so they don’t get to finish what they are saying. Sorry to say it but it’s pretty annoying and it looks like your guests feel the same. Got to leave this conversation and come back another time, because it’s putting me on edge. Overall a great channel. I hate to be a little negative but some of these guys have tales and memories that are gold to music lovers

This was a fascinating interview, one of the best I've seen on this channel. I wish it would have gone on longer as I'm sure Mr. Shurman has a lot more stories to tell. Perhaps he should write a book about his life in the Blues. I'll bet it would be a great read! Anyway, well done to both of you!

Great interview! Dick Shurman is a national treasure. One subject you didn't touch on here is how many blues scholars he's helped. When I and my co-author, Jim Segrest, were working on the only Howlin' Wolf biography, Dick was an incredibly generous source of information, insights, and introductions to people we wanted to meet. That book wouldn't have been complete without his help. We're not alone. Almost every biography of every Chicago blues figure that's come out in the last 25 years has included a thank-you to Dick. He's helped and inspired so many blues scribes, and we're all richer for it. Thanks for introducing him to your audience.

Great interview...his mind is still so razor sharp, as is his wit. I have loved his music since about 1987: I saw the Monterey Pop movie when I was like 14 and among other great life changing performances, was Section 43...a psychedelic oasis, and the footage of the grounds, particularly the fairway gave me the most profound deja vu I've had in my life...yet I was born in 73!!! But now, as an orchestral composer, I hear the music that inspired me when I was younger, with fresh ears and an even deeper appreciation of it...thanks Mark for interviewing one of my adolescent idols with such class and humor and thank you Joe for all of the mind bending music and thought provoking lyrics you have given us over time...I would LOVE to cover Section 43 for orchestra!!!

A lot of meat to digest in this conversation. Years ago, Billy Branch told me that in the minds of most black fans there is little distinction between Tyronne Davis and Bb King as relates to genre. It all falls under "black music." There is a ton of bitterness among female black vocalists over the glory (and fortune) given to every new young white sexy singer who comes along. Compare the fates of a Sue Foley or even a Susan T. to a Nora Jean Wallace or Katherine Davis or Karen Carroll and on and on. First, they NEVER get any mainstream radio airplay, they don't get invited to mixed genre music festivals, they lack the resources to get proper PR and marketing, etc etc. Is the root cause attributable to our racist history and music business practices, of course. Anyway, Dick is a gem. I'm really glad you did this Mark. And for the desire to broach these touchy issues.

Thanks! Love both of your playing. I was in Chicago for 1 day. Only time I've ever been. Dragged a co-worker to check out some music. Ended up at Buddy Guy's Legends. Fenton Robinson! What luck. So Lou Rawls was in the house. Fenton, Lou and Buddy got up and did "Everyday I Have the Blues" And fuckin killed it! Shook Buddy's hand when leaving...

Before Bill Graham started giving the band a venue on the West Coast they played a lot of university concerts. I saw them at Pauley Ballroom at UC Berkeley in late 1965 at a freshman welcome dance on a double bill with another new band that we did not know, The Jefferson Airplane. What a concert! Blew my mind and made me a lifelong Butterfield Blues Band, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop fan.
