Great to see Charlsie again. Best interviewer horse racing ever had. Many great personalities in this interview. Dave Johnson called some of the great races in history. Under a tremendous amount of pressure Eddie Maple did a fabulous job in Big Red's finale.Sham doesn't get the recognition he deserved. Many have said if it was any other year he would have won the majority of his races. He just happened to be born the same year as the greatest horse of all time....Secretariat.

Re Onion - Secretariat won the Belmont from the inside. The day he ran against Onion he had a fever. Everybody knew that they ran Secretariat when he was sick. Lucien's motto was "Don't tell no one nothing!" Penney regretted running Secretariat against Prove Out because he had a bad ankle that day. The owners and trainers fault. Just don't run him until he was ready to run. He'd been unbeaten. Like in the Wood Secretariat had an abscess the size of a half dollar. Lucien should have told Turcotte. Turcotte said he wouldn't have pulled up on the reins and could not understand why he kept jerking his head up. No, Lucient wasn't the BEST because he should have insisted that Secretariat NOT run when he was sick. Ruined Secretariat's record forever!

@@mightyhearts1376 I shed tears during the Belmont as it was happening on TV back then. Somebody else also cried. It was Jack Nicholas, arguably world's best ever professional golfer. He later said that he had found himself in his living room alone, on his hands and knees in front of the TV, weeping as secretariat came around the bend and down the stretch 31 lengths ahead. Nichlaus was good friends with Haywood Hale Broun of CBS News, who covered sports and horse racing. And Nicholas said to Broun, "Brownie, what happened to me?" Broun said, "Jack, for your entire career you have striven for perfection, and in that moment, you saw it."

I often wonder if God said to Ron Turcott I am going to turn the clock back and let you live a healthy normal life but Secretariat will not be a part of your life your choice stay as you are or live a normal healthy life, what choice he would make.
@janeblattner216 Жыл бұрын
What a stupid comment. Ron Turcotte's fate had nothing to do with Secretariat. He was on another horse when he had his accident. I am so sure Ron Turcotte was so grateful everyday (especially after his accident) that he was the Jockey on Secretariat for all the triple crown races. Ron Turcotte's life was as elevated as Secretariat's. Ron lived his life with bravery never let it get him down.
@WoundedWarrior20126 ай бұрын
Secretariat didn't paralyze him. You could never have ridden Secretariat
@salamanca19545 ай бұрын
I am dead certain that Ronnie would say, "Buzz off Lord, I'm good." Why? Turcotte was a jockey. They live hard, dangerous lives, and risk those lives everytime they get up on a 1-ton animal. But they live to ride those horses. Ron Turcotte is, and will always be, above all other jockeys, ever, because he rode God's horse. He would never trade that for anything.
@TalkingHorses4 ай бұрын
Turcotte has already been asked that question and he stated that he would pass on all the glory if he never had his legs taken from him. It's a bittersweet thought!
@TalkingHorses4 ай бұрын
Absolutely true, however, if he could do it all over again would he chose a path wherein he didn't lose his ability to walk? Secretariat was not the cause of his disability, his career as a jockey is the risk he took and later paid the price.

She is a very special woman who broke the barrier for a woman working at the track to become a TV commentator. She even worked to filling in for Phyllis George in non-equestrian sports.
