This was my college fraternitiy's theme song. Our chapter's first president (Beta of Sigma Tau Gamma), back in 1921, had a girlfriend named Margaret/Margie! We kept the tradition alive at least through my college years (1957-61) in Kirksville, MO. I wonder if the chapter still sings it here in 2025! We had many music majors for years in that era, and were a very musical chapter! The college was named "Kirksville State Teacher's College" at the time, and later gained national academic fame as "Truman State University."

Thanks for posting this. As I played it, I recalled liking it a lot, but hadn't heard it for years. I arranged it and added it to my song list. Great stuff as usual from der Bingle.

Is it too much of a stretch for English speakers to be asked to reproduce the opening dialogue between Ms. Russell and Mr. Crosby? Thank you very much in advance.

"What do you say now you and I join up, do a little duet here and tell the folks all about Istanbul?" "Well that goes along pretty good. I think they'd like that." "I want to tell you something, Connie. Hang on to the microphone tight here in the middle, in the release, because Ziggy Elman blows up a real tempest on the trumpet during his number." "And he is the one who can blow one up, too." "Ain't he the one? Yes, sir. Hold tight everybody."

The harmony is simply brilliant, there are some REALLY false notes in there (someone didn't know the chord) but apart from THAT it just sounds brilliant. This is the true 40s harmony style, super thickly voiced, often times doing one of those nostalgia chords. In the 30s it was a thinner voicing with more thirds and 6ths dominating making for a more typical sound and in the 20s it was choppier singing with shorter lines and whatnot.

I'll turn 80 in a week and I can tell you, whenever network TV telecast the third and last rounds of Bing's golf tournament (usually on NBC), one could enjoy at the very start a recording of Bing singing "Straight Down the Middle"....

Bing Crosby's parents were Harry Lillis Crosby (1870-1950), a bookkeeper, and Catherine Helen "Kate" (née Harrigan; 1873-1964). His mother was a second-generation Irish-American. His father was of Scottish and English descent; an ancestor, Simon Crosby, emigrated from the Kingdom of England to New England in the 1630s during the Puritan migration to New England. Through another line, also on his father's side, Crosby is descended from Mayflower passenger William Brewster (c. 1567 - 1644).

Good cover but of all the covers I have heard nothing can beat the original writer and recording artist of this song Ray Stevens.

What is it about 1936. Suddenly things picked up and everything produced was innovative and, well, just welcome to the human system. Bing's best movie, Shirley Temple's best (Poor Little Rich Girl), even random songs introduced in a quick scene from a non musical could blow any song writing from today half way across the universe.
@LesCish3 ай бұрын
No one can question Bing's greatness and this cover is really good. But without a doubt, nobody- not nobody- can beat the Otis Redding cover.
