Excellent little single channel scope from amazon, only $36 plus shipping and it includes a real scope probe.

This is a two stage rev limiter. The first stage is soft touch, firing two plugs, skipping the next, and repeating. This rotates the misfiring plug, preventing fouled plugs. If the engine powers through the first limit and goes 100 RPM beyond, the second stage will cut as many cylinders as needed. The soft touch is so smooth I was concerned some drivers may not know they are running on the rev limit. That's the primary reason for this simulation and test, to verify the system does not overheat when using the stock ignition coil and ballast resistor wire.

For this test I was using a 0.5 ohm TFI coil with no ballast resistor, so the rev limit transistor gets much hotter. The stock ignition used a 1.3 ohm coil and a 1.3 ohm ballast resistor wire.

The J&S SafeGuard is an ignition timing controller that listens for knock then retards only the knocking cylinders.

This video would benefit from an introduction explaining what's going on for a viewer who has no previous knowledge of what you're doing. You can assume standard background knowledge, e.g., what an ECU is, what an oscilloscope is, how electricity works, etc. But the specifics of what's on your bench were hard to me to grasp.

Fair enough. I'm a small manufacturer, and make knock controllers for distributor and coil on plug ignition, with versions for dumb coils and for smart coils. I have a few videos on my channel showing operation. Originally this was going to be a retest of a customer's J&S SafeGuard. I don't use a script and since "it was a retest", didn't feel the need to explain the purpose of the system. The SafeGuard is an individual cylinder knock controller. He has the Universal version for distributor ignition.

Hi John. That's pretty slack on the part of Holley. There's no excuse for that. The fact that there is no current limiting either makes me think that they don't use any current sensing at all. My ignitions behave just like yours, except at very low speeds where yours widens the dwell into current limit.

This is very interesting. I just got a Boss 302 with the factory rev limiter but at this time I don't know if its working or not. Do you know what they were set for at the factory and if they can be electronically tested before testing on the car? My car has the Pertronix Electronic ignition module in it now. Will your module work with that unit? Thanks for posting this.

The coil shown in this test has a 0.5 ohm primary, and is for a Ford TFI ignition. DO NOT use the Sniper module with this coil, as it will overheat. Holley says use a canister style coil, with higher primary resistance.

If this is connected to an HEI , how does it individualy know where each cylinder is?
@jselectronics8215
@jselectronics8215 3 жыл бұрын
If it hears a knock, it knows it had to be the cylinder that just fired, and that THAT cylinder won’t fire again for two more revolutions. When the knocking cylinder is about to fire again, software dials in the calculated amount of knock retard for THAT cylinder. Refer to this diagram from the “Tech” page on jandssafeguard.com www.jandssafeguard.com/images/KnockWindow.jpg

I forgot to say the program for six cylinder is different. For 4, 5, and 8 cylinder, the program fires two, skips one, fires two, skips one, etc. But that would foul the same two plugs on a six cylinder. In six cylinder mode, the program fires three, skips two, etc. This rotates the misfiring cylinders, preventing plug fouling.

Retest of Bill Holder’s Interceptor. He’s using it with a FAST ECU on a Buick GN with distributor and an MSD 10. The Interceptor was designed for direct ignition but you can use a single channel to work with distributor ignition. To make it MSD compatible, I converted the output driver from push-pull to open collector, by cutting an etch.

I left two stars feedback when seeing the bulk packaging in bubble wrap. If I had opened the bubble wrap and seen the bent pins before leaving feedback, I would have left only one star or rejected the order.

The Vampire was originally designed for coil on plug Ford ignition, but can also be used with a distributor and single coil, as shown here.
@jselectronics8215
@jselectronics8215 4 жыл бұрын
The Vampire is for direct ignition with dumb coils. To install, no wires are cut or intercepted. The stock inductive ignition remains in place and does most of the work. The Vampire goes active only to retard, or to rev limit. The Vampire retards by extending dwell, and rev limits by swallowing the flyback pulse and the current from the collapsing magnetic field in the coil.
@shortedtoground
@shortedtoground 4 жыл бұрын
Is the Vampire 2 able to swallow the current through the primary wires? (this version 2 is awesome by the way). I love your testing set up too.
@jselectronics8215
@jselectronics8215 4 жыл бұрын
@@shortedtoground Yes, the Vampire "control wires" connect to the coil negative of each coil. The charged coil is like a hot potato. If you drop it, you WILL make a spark. When the rev limit trip point is detected, the rev limit transistor turns on hard, killing the flyback pulse. Then it is slowly turned off, effectively turning the transistor into a load resistor, allowing the energy stored in the coil to bleed off in a controlled manner. Only then can the transistor be turned off. Otherwise the coil will try to make a spark.

I made the video about a year ago. I had a lot of videos up but I accidentally deleted the channel. Everything is done in software, so I could add the feature at any time, but I don't see a real benefit, other than as a marketing gimmick. It looks cool, and was a challenge to program. "Hard Fun", to borrow a phrase from electronic cookbook author Don Lancaster. I did it because there was a question on the speedtalk.com forum about the Pertronix Multispark. I asked if anyone had seen a video of the waveform. No replies, so I imagined what it might look like and spent a few weeks on it. The first spark has variable dwell with RPM, just like the standard unit. That's good, but the spark is cut off after 200usec. That's bad. But that's what you have to do if you want multi sparks. The dwell time for the rest of the sparks is set to 250usec, with a 200usec burn time. That's bad. We want a longer dwell time, and a longer burn time. The only way to do that would be to limit the number of mini sparks, and even then, it would be less than if just making a single, long duration spark. All the while you are making crappy sparks, you are stressing the ignition transistor. Of course, you could get a bigger heat sink and better transistor, but the sparks would still be crappy. And look at the flyback voltage. On my standard version, the flyback voltage is over 400v. Here, you can see it decrease with the number of sparks. Thanks for watching. I'm sure I've seen your name somewhere...?
@shortedtoground

@@jselectronics8215 In some of the Ford classes I used to teach, we went over their repetitive mode which was another name for multi spark. From the factory, vehicles had it to run leaner mixtures at Idle while preventing misfires with the extra sparks. It would shut off around 1,200 RPM's. I used to look at some patterns on a lab scope and saw three sparks until raising the rpm's shut it off. This is cool stuff, thanks for posting this video!
