Love how Joe Starkey was already excited to describe the ending, then goes to 11 at 6:12 while the crowd loses its shit.

I still get goosebumps watching and hearing the announcer. I was 10 years old when this happened and living in metro Detroit. I was watching Michigan just win their game and then abc showed this highlight and my cousins and their friends and I all went right outside with a football trying to duplicate the run back. Us kids just had so much fun that day trying to mock that play. This is what makes sports and childhood awesome!

What a way to end John Elway's NCAA career! I see he was clutch even in his college days, but his team still lost.

2:20 Watch Elway #7 call timeout w/8 secs left. He lost the game right there

@@bvalenz So what, even if Cal only had one tick left they still would’ve won. The 15 yard penalty influenced the ending more. But who knows, Cal still would’ve probably won regardless.

6:13 I love how they paused the replay right before the player spikes the ball on that poor unaware band guy for Stanford. They didn't want to embarrass him further

Stanford called last timeout immediately after last running play, could have let it wind down more and given Cal no time after fg but glad it worked out this way

This was before the strategy of holding it for the last shot. They should've called TO with 3 seconds left then kick the FG at the buzzer.

Last lateral was clearly an illegal forward lateral! Slow down video to 0.25x speed. See the ball released at 27 yard line, and caught at 25 yard line. It’s NOT a close call. 5:26 Here’s the highest resolution video available (watch from the 16-19 second time stamp): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnjCkpmnhJWZeZY
@wifi-YT Жыл бұрын
@Will Muny You may be right, but it’s debatable, whereas the illegal forward lateral is so blatant it’s not debatable. That’s why it’s better to focus on the forward lateral. No one can dispute it.

One thing that doesn't often go mentioned is that Joe Starkey is such a great announcer that he manages to sound excited for Stanford when they're driving and took the lead with the field goal, the events leading up to The Play.
@stephaniegormley99822 жыл бұрын
Correct. He was a "Cal homer" type announcer but it wasn't at the expense of the other team's dignity. All the great ones are like that. Jack Buck, Bill King, Ernie Harwell. Chuck Thompson.

Why did Stanford call a timeout with 8 seconds left??
@snowflakepillow86973 жыл бұрын
Because they needed that much time to get the special teams unit out there to set up and kick the field goal to have a chance not to lose after 8 seconds.
