I purchased a Dave Wilson Hosui pear tree from a local nursery in southern CA 3 years ago. The 1st 2 years the tree wasn't growing much, and now the 3rd year it got the fire blight. I keep pruning the infected branches, but it keeps getting more and more. If I prune more, the tree will have no branches. I will probably remove the whole tree. I don't know why Dave Wilson grows and sells such a very susceptible variety.

I planted a Santa rosa plum some years back here in western Mass. Description says self-fertile. Tree is looking great, covered in blossom, plenty of bees and no fruit set at all. Weather was not too bad either. What is the problem?

Can I ask a an apple tree question, however a disease one, not related to pests. I am in New England and six years ago I planted a small orchard and finally last year some flowers were on the trees. This was somewhat delayed by the low potassium levels in my soil. Last year proved dire! Frost kill, no bees as it was so cold and then wet, wet and more wet. Then along came fireblight! I grubbed out two trees last year and now two days ago I noticed two more that had systemic symptoms after bud burst and grubbed them out too. So four good looking trees lost to fireblight after six years of TLC. I have a large old wild apple tree growing next to the orchard which shows no sign of fireblight. Could it carry the disease without showing it? I am reluctant to fell it. Thanks for any advice.

The old tree could carry FB, but it would show some symptoms, too. They may be shoot blight, blossom blight, or just cankers on wood. extension.unh.edu/resource/fire-blight-fact-sheet

I don’t have a lot more to say than I said last time- if you’re expecting rain, expect to protect your orchard from apple scab. We are entering the accelerated phase of primary apple scab season now, and given how wet it was last year I expect there is a fair amount of inoculum out there so that even small releases of spores (as a percent of total potential infection) could cause substantial disease. This week I made a quick video where I walk through my thinking regarding whether or not we need a fungicide in the UVM orchard using NEWA, how to predict spray windows using other online tools, and how to select the materials we will be applying using the New England Tree Fruit Management Guide.

I thought I had fire blight on my apple tree, but I now see new growth coming out of the supposedly infected branches. Could it just be frosty damage? I first noticed the damage shortly after a frost. Can new growth grow from an infected branch?

Really good overview. Do leaves that show blackened margins or splotches- but do not die back fully - have fire blight or something else? And does a dark spot in the center of a pruned branch indicate the presence of the bacteria at that place?

Your not doing your trees any good by fondling the black knot and then handling other limbs and your other trees. The easiest way to spread black knot from tree to tree is by handling the black knot and then handling other limbs and other trees. Every time you touch the black knot and then touch other limbs and trees you are spreading the fungus spores to those other limbs and trees. Why are you not cutting well below the black knot and taking and burning those limbs? You see you are getting new growth on some of your trees with the black knot and so by removing the black knot and burning it you could save your trees. But by letting the black knot go it ends up spreading throughout the tree till it eventually gets into the trunk and destroys the entire tree.
