Before I was a NC Correctional Officer, I was in the U.S. Army 8 years active duty, an addition 4 years in the USNG and 4 years in the USAR. I was a REAL sergeant where REAL standards apply. No 300+ pound men with sergeant strips appearing to be rolling down the hallways. Embarrassing to see that in any professional field, especially military, law enforcement and correctional. If a person has no more "self control" than that, then they shouldn't "control" others. There's obviously then a question on their other standards as well. Just my personal opinion. It's called freedom of speech. You'll find it in the Constitution. I welded during the NG and AR years. Then I became a detention officer and then a deputy in Surry county, NC. We shared customers together with the state. That's when I found about about the early retirement offered by the state and about to be done away with. So I transferred from my county job to a state job with then NCDOC. I then served as a NC Correctional Officer / Chauffeur / Butler / Elite babysitter at a 1000 bed men's maximum security institution, AXCI. Early vested and retired. I enjoyed the job. I miss the camaraderie with my fellow officers the most. It takes a special person with inner strength and wanting to be an important asset to protect the public. You have to be in it for more than mere money. Saying that, doesn't mean you have to act like a complete ignorant fool that doesn't know what is really going on. To deny it means you're ignorant of the truth, just an ass kisser; or like most of us, overlook it and make the best out of it. I made the best out of it. Happily retired now. My dark humor has also been helpful for me for decades. You may of noticed. People with their hurt little feelings on their shirtsleeves are hilarious. Quit taking everything so serious. It affects your stress level. Thick skin and dark humor helps. That way it backfires on the deliverer instead. Very many complain about an issue but very few seek to do anything about it so to make positive change. I've always been one to not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. That's why after I retired, I joined two separate class action lawsuits going on by ex and retired correctional officers against the state of NC for unpaid wages and the gap pay scam. The NC state government doesn't feel you deserve a full check. Greed is their God. "By their fruits you shall know them." This same scam was beat in three other southern states. I ALWAYS read everything before I sign. That's the ONLY reason I knew of the gap pay scam. The in processing staff INTENTIONALLY don't tell you that you will be signing away your first hours of overtime into straight time. Seen that first hand. I worked 12 years and retired at 60. During that 12 years service, I asked literally dozens of correctional officers, did they know they were signing away their overtime. NOT ONE bothered to read what they were signing. You reap what you sow. Signing that paper removes liability from the state. That is why the lawsuits aren't working; even with the milicious intent to deceive by the state. But, I wanted the early retirement and got it. Mission accomplished. The sweet icing on the cake is it costs the state hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting the lawsuits on their obvious white collar corruption, while having to send me my retirement check every month. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I can look in the mirrow and respect the man in the mirrow for trying to bring a financially positive change for the correctional officers of North Carolina. They deserve nothing less. 🇺🇸

Judge Summe yelled at me in court telling me that I hadn't done what I needed to do, and continued to insult me and my family by telling me that people in her family (as opposed to mine, I guess) would have figured out the appropriate ac5tion to take. She then ordered me to retake an assessment that I had already taken. I have court again tomorrow and I fear for my freedom. I feel as though I have no reasonable way of knowing what judge Summe will do, even though I have checked with pretrial services on three separate occasions to make absolutely sure that I am doing the right thing, and have also hired a private lawyer to assist me with my case. My situation is that I was stopped during a traffic stop and searched without my consent. This is despite the fact that a K9 unit was present and did not recommend a search, and despite the fact that I was sober, did perfectly fine on a field sobriety test, and blew all zeroes on an alcohol breathalyzer. My person was searched without probable cause and I was found to me in possession of a controlled substance. I was then beaten up by the officers on site and I do have scars to show this. I was told that I was resisting arrest when I was only trying to minimize the damage to my wrist, and I was also pepper sprayed and tased when I got to the detention center and then tied to a chair and placed alone, where I was greeted by an officer, (I think he's important because he's always present in court) who pepper sprayed me AGAIN, while I was tied to the chair. It is possible that this was water displacing the pepper already on my face, but he was asking me questions I was unable to answer as a result of the direct spray to my face and the resulting pain, and even continued to ask me why I wasn't answering him when it was obvious that his actions prevented me from doing so. Regardless of the outcome of my current case, I do have every intention of hiring a lawyer that is able to address the mistreatment that I faced after being arrested. I'm a gay an Hispanic male and I suspect that my mistreatment may have been associated with one or both of these aspects of my identity. It saddens me to know that despite doing what I was asked (TWICE), I have no way of feeling sure that I will maintain my liberty, and no way of knowing that I won't be disrespected a second time if judge Summe is not in a good mood. I never should have been arrested to begin with, and NOBODY should have to deal with the level of unprofessionalism that I have had to deal with at every step of this process. This needs to change.

Yeah. She's a real bitch. Or he. Looks more like a man. Honorable..lol. Can't stand to look at it. She's a dirty judge just like some cops. Can't trust the system.

The Recreational hot spot looks AMAZING and it’s a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. The mountain biking ideas are incredible and are just what families need these days and it’s rare to find good places in Kenton country besides devou, but devou doesn’t have easier trails where here has great opportunities for children to develop skills in a safe way. Access to doe run could be fantastic as well. This park would be a treasure and it would not be wasted time and money going with this plan!

Thank you Renee, Dr. Chai, and JE Knochelmann. For anyone who ever, or who still denies the reality of COVID-19, hopefully these personal stories by our local leaders will get through to you and change your attitudes and behavior. If nothing else, perhaps these stories will move you to think of others. To everyone else: that we have COVID deniers and worse - people who are genuinely hostile and sometime violently opposed to public health, science, and evidence-based intelligence; this should be a wake-up call for us to address our long-simmering national crisis of mental health and it's evil twin, racism (and xenophobia, misogyny, etc.). We have an opportunity here to unite in healing our national mental psychosis.

Well, I sure hope all these bureaucrats have set up complete backup with the local ARES ham radio people until they get the 800 MHz system in place. When all else fails, amateur radio operators like me are able to respond within 30 minutes to assist indefinitely in communicating for the community. de W3ATB

They don't have a clue about amateur radio. Ask Trevor Rohe or Gary Helton and all you get is a blank look on their faces and then they think you are up to something. Go over to Independence like I did with my ham radio in the car and you will be arrested. I know, I know, it's perfectly legal to have a ham radio in your car even if it can receive police frequencies but they will arrest you for it and then you will have to go to court at your own expense and never get an apology. I have been a licensed amateur radio operator since the 1980s, a volunteer firefighter on 2 departments and worked for a county health department. That got me nowhere when I had to deal with a couple morons wearing a badge who arrested me, towed my car, put me in jail ( I had a clean record and still do ) and forced me to hire an attorney. The charges were dropped immediately after I showed the judge a copy of my amateur radio license and a copy of Kentucky law. Just ask Trevor Rohe and Gary Helton. Oh, the best part is that Gary Helton got promoted to road sergeant a few months later!
