9:34 One of the things I liked about the COIN game Cuba Libre is you have two different insurgents who need to work together but have different goals. (edit) albeit you will eventually have to limit the different factions to a limited number meaning merging insurgents together (like the NPA and Moors in People Power) or omitting them out all together. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJPJfY17lLOHiKssi=1qsvDC0eU-TpRnM7&t=3855

I've had x-wing for years and only played it few times. Recently I've bought Star Trek Alliance Dominion War, which is coop/solo variant of Attack Wing. Already played it with few people and I must say, Attack Wing is far more superior product.

I have played well we over 100 games of Avalon and about 30 games of Secret Hitler. As someone who hosts large board game cookouts, I have to say Avalon is the superior game for larger groups. The problem with Secret Hitler in big groups is that half the table have to sit and watch the other half of the table play. When the game is close, which most are, it makes no strategic sense to start electing the other half of the table that hasn’t played yet. If you’re a liberal, your best bet is to veto any government that doesn’t include the first half that have already played. Not to mention one player is literally eliminated at the 75%-80% mark; so for at least 15 minutes, one player isn’t allowed to speak or participate in the game. Thats the poor design of Secret Hitler; it’s a 5-10 player game-but only 2 people are ever playing at a time. With Avalon, most quests have 3-5 players on them, so every round at least half of the table is actively playing. And because all, or all but one, of the good guys have to go on a quest at the choke point-that means that every single player at the table is involved in every single game. The other thing that’s wonderful about Avalon, is that it’s a flexible game. Let’s say the group you’re playing with struggles to get the Arthurian’s to win. You can add Percival, you can remove Morgana, you can play with the Lady of the Lake card (which allows Knights to gain information) etc. And vice versa; if bad guys are having a hard time winning, you can add Mordred, remove Percival, etc. As far as game design goes, I also think Avalon is superior because it has less randomness. The chances of a good guy in Secret Hitler drawing 3 Fascist Policies are high. To some, that seems fun because it means games are diverse. But to me, it takes away the point in hidden-identity games: using psychology to detect your friends lying. In Avalon, if there is a fail card, you _know_ someone is lying. So it’s a matter of determining which of the 3-5 people are lying-and that’s the fun! In Secret Hitler, if there’s a fascist policy played-you really have no idea if _anyone_ is actually lying. And because there are twice the number of fascist policies as there are liberal-you really have no confidence in any fascist policy played.

As a Star Wars (and X-wing) nut whose best friend is far more into Star Trek, I particularly enjoyed this 😂

Star Trek Attack Wing is my personal favorite, and I have a substantial collection. However, my Friend has Star Wars X-Wing (1st Ed.), and that game plays just as well. Our game club creates original scenarios for both, and we find that quite fun and challenging. Qapla'!

Why do people talk about the research tracks like it's something new and amazing. It's already available in TM! Terraforming and range is on the faction boards. More income is on the favor tiles. And more knowledge income is basically priests. GP has less interaction and are more forgiving. And you can't learn the best strategies for the factions as the map always changing. It should pay of to play the same game over and over. So no thanks, i stick with TM.

Mansions really falls flat when you consider how bogged down it is, because of unnecessary components and bigger cards that have made the box too big and heavy. Plus the price for what you get is a sad joke. On top of that it is app driven, who thought it is fun? Why would I want to sit down for a board game session only to have my head stuck in a phone?

As an ex-USAF PJ, who served at a transitional point in history (final years of the Cold War, into the start of the forever war in the deserts and plains), I find it interesting how both games portray their time periods. As a child, growing up in England (I have a complex backstory lol), I remember being told constantly that we were either going to death in atomic heat or nuclear winter. That there was no future. The younger generations weren't subjected to this, so nuclear war might seem "weird" to them, whereas it was something we were told would be inevitable. I also find it interesting that Labyrinth was designed by a CIA national security analyst, as to me, that shows either deliberate simplification, or a lack of "real data" having been analyzed.

he is right, there no intense moments in whitechapel.
@williammcneil20452 жыл бұрын
i have played letters from whitechapal and its super bad, most of the game is the players flailing about guessing where jack might be but no he isnt there. it is very boring, also i dont see the point in a guessing game. also in fury of dracula, the powers, or special actions can show you where dracula is or just was. who ever plays as dracula has to move fast or they will be caught. that just doesnt happen in whitechapel, special actions in that game just make you move farther across the board. the only way to tell where jack is, is if you are next to a spot he has been or he is right next to you. that makes whitechapel a huge guessing game. going to places and yep jacks not there, oh go to another place oh jacks not there either. very boring.

frankly clans of caledonia looks too simple, terra mystica is too long tho, it takes 4-6 hours. how long is gaia project ?
@WannaBeRockStar800 Жыл бұрын
It’s long but I wouldn’t say 4-6 hours. My group loves terra Mystica but we only play it a few times a year (2-3 times max). We spend a good 20 minutes setting up and relearning parts of it. With that included for a 4 player game it takes us 2 1/2 to 3 hours. And we are by no means a fast group or completely fluent in the game.
@williammcneil20452 жыл бұрын
when you build your priest building, you get to pick from 12 different tokens that give you resources, some of them you cant get any other way. terra mystica is a favorite of my sisters, it does alot of things, other board games just dont do.
@williammcneil20452 жыл бұрын
um terra mystica has a ton of interaction, you see players can build where you want to build. also you cant build through some one, you have to build around them, which means that players can cut you off of whole sections of the board. also your buildings cost half, if you build them next to some one, but at the same time you dont want to get cut off.

So I'm German and I'm a bit intrigued Do non Germans actually care about the Spiel des Jahres Award? Like this isn't the first time I have seen it being mentioned in an English speaking video
@CreakingShelves2 жыл бұрын
The enthusiastic board game hobbyists follow along and like to try the nominees out. There isn't much in the way of similar awards in English territories so the Spiel des Jahres has become something of note. But it doesn't have any recognition to the non-hobbyist public that I'm aware of.

Even though I love social deduction games I've never found Deception that fun. It just feels like there's too many weapons and other info, whereas Mysterium breaks things up by the Person, Location and Weapon which gives a nice sense of progression. I've never found the voting tokens a problem as it keeps the discussion interesting by showing how strongly people think about each others choices.

I think Secret Hitler is the best social deduction game, and the best party board game. Avalon is also a great game, bit it feels too short to me. Secret Hitler is longer and more complex version of avalon, while being equally easy to learn. I play both games however, depending on number of people that want to play. Secret Hitler needs 9-10 players for full experience (wouldn't play below 8), while avalon works just fine with 6+ players.
